Overview

The 2015 Ford Expedition gets a mid-life update this year and while the styling update is rather subtle, the biggest changes are under the skin. The V8 powertrain is replaced by a new 3.5L twin-turbo V6 also borrowed from the F-150. The Ford Expedition interior also gets minor updates and now there are multiple new suspension setup options as well to better spec the Expedition as per your needs.

2015 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

The Ford Expedition gets a considerable update this year and hence feels worth the additional investment. That said, if you don't mind the older V8 engine, the 2014 Expedition could save you some money. Buying a used Ford Expedition will get you even better deals at a discounted price considering the depreciation.

While the overall dimensions and interior space of the 2015 Ford Expedition remain rather similar, there are more features on offer as standard. The downsized engine now improves fuel efficiency and the third-row seats are the best in the full-size segment. At this price point in the segment, the Expedition competes against the likes of Toyota Sequoia, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and GMC Yukon

2015 Ford Expedition for sale

The 2015 Expedition price now starts at an MSRP of $45,780 which is a price hike of $2,610. Available for sale with both finance and lease options, the Expedition lease deals begin with a monthly payment of $695 for a 36-month period and 10,000 miles of annual mileage limit with a $4,600 down payment and a $625 acquisition fee. The 2015 Expedition finance deals start at $799/month for a tenure of 60 months with a $4,578 down payment.

Buying Advice

Well, the Expedition is best known for its impressive capabilities like towing, off-roading, ruggedness, and superior power figures from its V6 motor, and these highlighted points are offered in all the trim levels. However, if you want to add some comfort and luxury to your ride, the King Ranch will better give a value-for-money package. Along with the tremendous capabilities you are getting, luxurious amenities like leather seats with heating function, premium audio system, remote engine start, and many more, which we think is fair.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

After being rather unchanged for a few years now, the new 2015 Ford Expedition MSRP starts at $45,780 including the $1,195 destination fee. The all-new powertrain now offers superior towing and acceleration performance over the outgoing model while the options for different suspension setups prepare the Expedition for the different needs of the buyers.

The 2015 Expedition reliability rating of 79/100 is the best segment ahead of its Japanese counterparts but the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is pretty basic at best. The Expedition cost of ownership is also pretty much on par with the segment standards at around $50,095. But considering the high resale value and low problems of Ford products, it further sweetens the deal for its buyers.

Buying Advice

Well, the Ford Expedition is best known for its impressive capabilities like towing, off-roading, ruggedness, and superior power figures from its V6 motor, and these highlighted points are offered in all trim levels. However, if you want to add some comfort and luxury to your ride, the 2015 Expedition Limited will better give a value-for-money package. Along with the tremendous capabilities you are getting, luxurious amenities like leather seats with heating function, premium audio system, remote engine start, and many more, which we think is fair.

Features
8.0/10

The 2015 Ford Expedition is available for sale in four trim configurations, namely XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. The 2015 Expedition XLT being the entry-level trim starts at $45,780 and is equipped with features like cruise control, keyless entry, electrochromic rear-view mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and much more. However, as you climb to higher trim levels, the features like leather seat upholstery, remote engine start, heated front seats, premium audio system, and blind-spot monitor are added. The King Ranch and Platinum models only feature styling updates and get only a handful of feature updates.

The new load-leveling rear suspension and adaptive suspension setups are available as standalone options along with second-row captain's chairs, 22-inch wheels, and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The 2015 Ford Expedition might not impress you with its fuel economy, moreover, this range of SUVs is so inefficient. The Expedition’s 3.5L motor delivers a fuel economy rating of 16 MPG in the city and almost 22 on the highways, and with the fuel tank capacity of 28 gallons, you can expect a driving range of about 448 miles in the city and 616 miles on the highways. Opting for the 4WD drivetrain sees a drop in the MPG ratings by about 2 MPG.

The Ford Expedition has a decent fuel economy rating while the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon offer similar frugality thanks to the cylinder deactivation technology. Both the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia are far less efficient in comparison and therefore also offer a much lower driving range. The Tahoe falls short in terms of range against the 2015 Expedition due to the smaller gas tank capacity.

Interior
7.9/10

The cabin of the 2015 Ford Expedition has an ample amount of room inside, which provides three-row seating and can accommodate 8 passengers comfortably. The cabin aesthetics perfectly reflects the ruggedness of the SUV with a selection of high-quality materials and excellent fit and finish. The dashboard and the center console make the driving position very commanding, where they are finished in soft-touch materials from the top. The strips of brushed silver on the dashboard and some wooden treatment at the center give a premium look and feel. However, the center area is cluttered with lots of buttons and knobs which look somewhat outdated, but they are good in terms of practicality.

Coming to its seating capacity and comfort, you can comfortably fit 8 adults here with an ample amount of room for everyone. The seats are wrapped in brown leather upholstery except for the XLT trim, which gets fabric upholstery. It provides pretty good trunk space even with all the rows up, however, by folding the third-row seats, the volume increases to 55 cu-ft. which is more than enough to carry luggage for 5. The base XLT trim level of the 2015 Ford Expedition features a 4.2-inch panel that supports SiriusXM satellite radio, voice activation, and navigation. However, the higher trim levels feature an 8-inch touchscreen panel which is really intuitive and has cleaner graphics that make your experience much better.

All are massive SUVs in the competition that provides seating space for 8 passengers. The Expedition has all three rows of almost equal space distribution, which doesn’t make you feel cramped even in the third row. The Armada also has quite a good cabin space along with the voluminous boot, while the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon have very little space in the third row. The Toyota Sequoia does good in offering decent passenger and cargo space, but it is the 2015 Ford Expedition interior that offers the best cabin space.

Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Power heated/ventilated front seats & heated rear seats w/driver seat memory
  • Sliding/reclining second-row seats & power-folding third-row seats
  • Leather steering wheel & leather seat upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control w/rear vents
  • Auto-dimming IRVM & Power adjustable pedals
  • SiriusXM radio & Real-time traffic display
  • 8-inch SYNC infotainment system w/12-speakers Sony sound system
  • HD radio and voice commands

Exterior
7.9/10

The exterior design of the 2015 Ford Expedition looks very boxy and rugged with minimal design elements and bold looks. The SUV is designed more for practicality rather than attractive aesthetics from the outside. The front fascia of this SUV looks very bold and muscular. The headlamps feature a projector and halogen combination setup which perfectly aligns with the massive chrome grille. The lower part of the bumper also gets some silver treatments with the LED fog lamps.

From the side profile, it looks bulky and tall. With the massive wheel arches and the dark tinted glass, it looks like a perfect rugged off-roader SUV. The window liners and the mirror are treated with chrome which highlights their looks. It gets 20-inches aluminum-alloy wheels with a kind of low-profile tires, while the XLT trim gets 18-inch alloys. From the rear, it has a simplistic design with all dark tinted glass which absolutely enhances its looks and maintains a cooler cabin as well. The rear also gets Expedition badging on a thick chrome strip.

The length of the Armada is the longest which helps in the voluminous cabin and trunk as well. The Armada also offers the longest wheelbase in the competition followed by the Ford Expedition, which also happens to be the second-longest SUV after the Nissan Armada. The ground clearance of all the SUVs is very appreciable, and you don’t need to worry about any kind of terrain. Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Power adjustable and heated side-view mirrors
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Power running boards
  • Automatic projector headlamps
  • Functional roof rails

Safety
9.0/10

The 2015 Expedition is based on Ford’s T1 platform which is also being shared with Ford F-150, Lincoln Mark LT, and the Lincoln Navigator. The platform provides 10 percent more torsional rigidity and incorporates a four-wheel independent long-travel suspension system. The Expedition is well tested by the NHTSA for its crashworthiness and results in a 5-star rating which demonstrates its robustness and capabilities. It is equipped with a wide range of active and passive safety features, among which some of the features worth mentioning are as follows:

  • Brake assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Advanced roll stability control

Competition
8.0/10

2015 Ford Expedition vs 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe carries a higher price tag as per the segment standards but it is the Expedition that offers a superior acceleration performance and better maximum towing capacity. The interior of the Expedition is also far more spacious and with the facelift, it now features more creature comforts. The high reliability and resale value make the Ford our preferred choice.

2015 Ford Expedition vs 2015 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada is the go-to option for many budget buyers for its very low starting price. That said, the performance is lackluster and the interior does feel outdated and cheap too. For the higher price tag, the 2015 Expedition gets more creature comforts, better efficiency, a larger cargo area, and practical third-row seats. Unless you have a very strict budget, there is no point opting for the Armada over the Expedition.

2015 Ford Expedition vs 2015 Toyota Sequoia

The 2015 Sequoia offers very similar value to its buyers as that of the Expedition. Both have a strong powertrain and are almost equally quick off the mark. Both have a premium feel to the interior and have enough space in all three rows. That said since the Ford Expedition offers better fuel economy figures, superior towing capacity, is marginally more spacious, and yet carries a similar price tag, it wins this comparison.

Final Verdict

The Ford Expedition is a highly durable and capable vehicle from Ford, which is superior to the competition in terms of practicality, performance, and comfort. The SUV can accommodate 8 adults comfortably, and you get various luxurious amenities here. Its 3.5L twin-turbocharged motor has impressive performance and it is refined as well. Despite being the bulkiest in the class, it completes a quarter-mile distance faster than others. If you really want a highly capable SUV along with better economy and comfort, the 2015 Ford Expedition will better meet your demand.
