The ACURA rep looked at the paint and claimed to have "taken a sample" in which they immediately denied my claim for covered warranty work due to "outside influence like bugs," Cicadas they specifically referenced. Japanese automobile manufacturers were primarily known for their reliability when it comes to passenger space, comfort, and reliable engines. Probably, it's one of the valid reasons for the multi-dimensional midsize SUVs from Acura that have been in limelight for quite a long. With a base price of $48,000, the Acura MDX provides a seating capacity of 7 people as it has a third-row, unlike 5-seater SUVs.

However, it will be an underrated statement to consider the SUV superior, as the model competes against the Volvo XC90, the Infiniti QX60, and the Lexus RX 350L. Despite the competition, Acura earned a global reputation for selling a total of 47,816 units in the respective year, standing ahead of the XC90, which has a sales volume of 34,251 units in the same year.

Some car experts believe that the sales volume of Acura would have reflected a far more superior sales digit, had its electrical system, engine, and equipment issues never malfunctioned in any of the sold models. According to the NHTSA website, the MDX suffered serious issues due to the fuel pump failure, for which the automobile brand has issued 1 recall and asked the dealers to repair or replace it within a specific time frame.

Electrical Problems

  • Faulty electrical transmission

This is a common problem in most MDX SUVs. Several users have faced wrong gear shifts due to faulty auto transmission systems stopping the vehicle to move even after pressing the accelerator pedal. Sometimes, the gear shift changes to neutral mode stopping the vehicle to move even when the accelerator pedal is pressed. These issues usually occur when the transmission sensors fail in estimating the required speed limit to maintain while the wheels are moving, sending the wrong signal to the Electrical Control Unit by engaging or disengaging the wrong brakes.

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Multiple issues with the steering, and brakes

Faulty steering issues are a serious concern in most MDXs. User complaint includes that the steering wheel rotates too much when it's not intended to. Sometimes it hesitates to move and accelerates rapidly, resulting in a delayed drive. At times, the user felt like losing stability while driving the vehicle. The users have also found that the braking system delays in responding while engaging them. It appeared that all those systems and controls which were supposed to work dynamically seem rigid and do not function accordingly. The reasons behind these malfunctions must be detected and replaced by the dealers.

Structural Problems

  • Faulty windshield construction

A user complaint includes faulty windshield construction of the Acura causing inconvenience to the driver while driving the vehicle. People with fairly short height might have to struggle to see the front for identifying the vehicle or object coming by from the window corner while driving. Such constructional issues should be inspected and if possible should be repaired.

Safety Issues

  • Sunroof explosion

Moonroof explosion is a common problem with most MDX SUVs. User complaint includes sudden explosion of the moonroof all of a sudden while driving through a freeway. These concerns must be inspected under the safety issues as the uncertain explosion of the sunroof might cause injury to the passengers seated inside the vehicle. The manufacturer should instruct the dealers to inspect the issue as a matter of urgent priority and if needed they should replace or repair it for free.

Fuel pump failure may lead to engine stallation, causing inconvenience to the driver by stopping the vehicle in the middle of the road.

Low pressure in fuel pump may not supply sufficient fuel needed to run the engine, triggering a malfunction, and ultimately leading the vehicle to a halt. Such instances may stop the vehicle causing inconvenience to the passengers.

The manufacturer will be notifying the owners about the issue and ask the dealers to replace the fuel pump assembly for free of cost. The recall for the issue is 20V314

Should You Buy a 2020 Acura MDX?

The 7-seater SUV with a third-row option makes it a spacious choice for family buyers. The vehicle’s amazing on-road performance and impressive towing capacity prove its reliabilty and practical nature.

However, the issues found with the 2020 Acura MDXs faulty fuel pump system, problematic moonroof, and constructional defect in the windshield raised questions about the vehicle’s popularity, but that has been taken care of by the manufacturer. The dealers not only fixed those problems for which a recall was issued but rather repaired those and fixed them to resolve the issues from recurring in the future.

So, buying a used MDX will always be a smart decision at a good resale value only if the vehicle is free from all those issues and problems which it had earlier.
