Overview

Making a trustworthy and durable utility vehicle isn’t easy, and we’ve seen many such visually promising vehicles fail to live up to the claims of their makers. However, Toyota takes everything quite seriously which is evident from its formidable lineup of trucks and SUVs such as the Tundra, the Hilux, and the Land Cruiser. The brand decided to add another contender to the lineup, the Tacoma, back in 1995 and it went on to become the best-selling truck of the brand as well. The truck entered its third-generation model eight years ago and hasn’t received any significant upgrades yet.

2023 Toyota Tacoma for sale

In its segment, the Tacoma competes with the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, the GMC Canyon Crew Cab, and the Ford Ranger SuperCrew.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the SR5 trim if you’re looking for the best value for money option, along with the Trail Edition package for a better experience.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab is expected to arrive with a couple of minor additions in terms of optional visual appearance packages. As standard, the truck will get an I-4 motor while an optional V6 stays in the picture too for better performance. The Double Cab body style will be available in three trim levels with the price commencing from $29,415. Moreover, the truck also gets two different bed sizes and an optional 4WD layout as well. In its segment, the Tacoma competes with the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, the GMC Canyon Crew Cab, and the Ford Ranger SuperCrew.

Release Date

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab is expected to be released by late fall 2022.

Engine and Performance
4.0/10

Toyota fitted a small 2.7-liter I-4 during the last redesign of the Tacoma but it failed to garner attention due to its laggy performance and capabilities. Moreover, a majority of the rivals in the segment use a standard V6 right from the base model for a truck-like performance. The optional powertrain of the Tacoma is also a V6 unit that offers muscular performance and towing capabilities, making the truck at par with its competitors. The motor in question is a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated 2GR-FKS V6 unit that pushes out a healthy 278 horsepower along with 265 lb-ft of torque. As standard, the motor is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission but you also have the option of getting a 6-speed manual transmission. As the power figures suggest, the motor is sufficient for almost every task you throw at it, and you can enjoy its true potential out on the highways with the optional manual gearbox. The 0-60mph sprint is completed within 9.8 seconds, a decent time for the segment while the quarter-mile sprint takes 16.7 seconds.

The Chevrolet Colorado gets a standard 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 under its hood that makes muscular power and torque figures. However, it is only marginally quicker than the V6-equipped Tacoma though. The GMC Canyon shares the same powertrain with the Colorado hence its power and torque figures are similar to the latter as well. The Ford Ranger is the stunner here since it makes the highest torque despite having a small 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 under the hood. As a result, it is a lot quicker than the rest of the rivals mentioned here both in 0-60mph and quarter-mile sprints.

2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Ride and Handling

Pickup trucks are quite synonymous with ponderous handling due to their high ride height and ladder-frame chassis. The Toyota Tacoma, being a small truck, handles slightly better than the full-size trucks out there but it isn’t a cornering or an enthusiast’s machine at all. Moreover, to handle loads better, the truck has a stiffer-than-average suspension setup when compared to its rivals, making its on-road driving manners a bit off too. Keep it relaxed, and the Tacoma drives smoothly and is quite easy to maneuver in city limits; however, you can feel the heft of the steering sometimes.

2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Braking Performance

A capable set of braking hardware is of utmost importance for trucks and the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab gets adequately-powerful brakes as well. At the front, the truck gets 10.8-inch rotors while at the rear, the rotors measure 10 inches. When compared with the rivals, the brakes are smaller but the braking distance according to the curb weight is decent at146 feet.

The Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab gets standard-sized, 12.2-inch rotors at the front and slightly bigger, 12.75-inch rotors at the rear. The braking performance of the Colorado is better than the Tacoma’s since the former weighs more and still manages to halt from 60mph within 146 feet. The GMC Canyon shares the braking hardware with the Colorado hence the stopping distance is almost similar at 143 feet. The Ford Ranger SuperCrew beats all the rivals here with its 130-feet stopping distance.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

Coming to the fuel economy department, the Toyota Tacoma is neither impressive nor terrible either. Due to no upgrades in terms of powertrain, the 2023 Tacoma with its V6 is expected to return an average of 19mpg in the cities while 24mpg out on the highways. The combined mileage output is rated at 21mpg. With a standard gasoline tank size of 21.1 gallons, the truck manages to eke out a maximum of 400 miles of city driving range along with over 500 miles of highway driving range as well.

The Chevrolet Colorado has even poorer gas mileage ratings than the Tacoma with only 17mpg of city mileage rating. On the highways though, the Colorado has an identical mpg rating to the Tacoma. The GMC Canyon shares its powertrain with the Colorado hence its EPA ratings are also similar too. The Ford Ranger, despite getting the smallest powertrain here, manages to level with the V6-equipped rivals here but its small, 18-gallon gas tank lets it down in terms of driving range figures.

Interior
5.0/10

The Toyota Tacoma is due for an update and it is quite evident from the aging cabin design. However, the cabin speaks volumes about a robust build with durable materials all around. The front seats offer more than an adequate amount of headroom and legroom along with some creature comforts such as leather upholstery and power adjustments for the driver’s seat. The rear seats, however, are quite tight in the legroom area, making it impossible for adults to travel long distances. The rear seats can be lifted to reveal a storage space to store items and the seats can also be used for keeping those extra personal items as well. Shelling out more for the optional packages will get you the extra goodies such as heated front seats, all-weather floor mats, and a home-style 120-volt power outlet.

The Chevrolet Colorado’s cabin is much more spacious than the Tacoma’s interior and has the least amount of styling possible as well. However, the Colorado loses out when it comes to offering standard storage capacity. The GMC Canyon has a similar and well-appointed cabin to the Colorado’s interior and the interior dimensions are the same too. The Ford Ranger’s cabin is a rather simple one too, and it fares better than the Tacoma’s cabin in terms of space. However, the Tacoma still sits on the top with the maximum cargo capacity at its disposal.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab include:

  • Power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated front seats(optional)
  • Unique seat trim(optional)
  • Adjustable steering rack

How intuitive is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab is quite decent for a pickup truck and gets a standard 7-inch touchscreen display. As you move up to the SR5 trim, the 7-inch unit is replaced with a more extensive 8-inch system. As standard, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite radio, three-USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot are offered. The top-end Limited trim gets an upgraded JBL audio system for a better listening experience. Navigation is provided in a bundled form with a few optional packages.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab include:

  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • 6 speaker stereo
  • Apple Carplay And Android Auto
  • Wireless device charging pad
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Satellite Radio
  • Navigation system (optional)

Exterior
6.0/10

The Toyota Tacoma might be a small truck in terms of its segment classification, but it gets a strong and muscular design on the outside. Right from the base trim onwards, the truck gets a rugged appeal due to the front-end design and would remind you of the older Tundra. As you move up the trims, the exterior gets appearance tweaks such as chrome trim inserts on the SR5 trim along with 16-inch alloy wheels. Moving up to the top-end Limited trim will get you bigger 18-inch alloy wheels along with a silver-finish front grille. The side profile gives the truck its added muscular appeal with the chunky yet slim wheel arches. Other than these, there aren't many design cues to go on about. At the rear, the truck gets two bed configurations to choose from and Toyota offers a strong composite build for them that eliminates the requirement of a bed liner as well. As standard, the Tacoma stands tall with a ground clearance of 9.1 inches which allows it to go over a majority of tarmac conditions easily.

The Chevrolet Colorado’s exterior design looks slightly toned down when compared to the Tacoma’s appeal, but it looks more refined and modern, though. From the sides, the Colorado looks more muscular due to the bulkier fender design but it sits lower than the Tacoma, with a ground clearance of 8.4 inches. The GMC Canyon’s exterior design looks slightly more premium than the Colorado, but it is the higher trims that actually look premium. The Ford Ranger has a slightly smaller feel due to its small-ish front fascia but has a rugged appearance nonetheless.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 16-inch/18-inch alloy wheels
  • LEED headlamps
  • Sunroof
  • Chrome exterior trims
  • Power-sliding rear glass
  • Movable bed cleats

Safety
5.0/10

Toyota has never skimped in terms of the safety aspects of its vehicles and the trusted Tacoma here is no different either. The current, 2022 model of the truck bagged some decent crashworthiness scores from the IIHS along with an overall 4-star rating from the NHTSA as well. To keep up with the rivals, the brand has equipped the Tacoma with a few ADAS techs as standard right from the base trim which are forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning. Apart from these, the truck gets almost all the basic safety features such as traction control, multiple airbags, brake assist, and child safety locks.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • 360-degree Camera System
  • Forward Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Adaptive cruise control

Competition

2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

Among all the midsize pickups out there, the Chevrolet Colorado sits among the top 3 options in its segment and it does offer a solid package too. Unlike the Tacoma, the Colorado gets a V6 right from its base model but the Tacoma has the edge here since, with the base I-4 motor, it poses a cheaper option for budget-oriented shoppers. On the inside, the Tacoma feels solid but lacks rear-seat legroom to a serious extent whereas the Colorado can seat 5 occupants with three at the back with reasonable comfort. In terms of fuel economy numbers, the Tacoma takes a marginal lead with slightly more highway and combined mileage ratings than the Colorado.

2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vs 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab

The GMC Canyon is a mechanical twin of the Chevrolet Colorado but looks better though. With a more modern platform than the Tacoma, the Canyon offers a lot more for the price such as more standard onboard features and more standard safety features as well. The Tacoma still has a slight edge by offering a much cheaper option for budget-restricted shoppers with its smaller I-4 equipped models whereas the Canyon only comes with a V6.

2023 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vs 2022 Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger is among the quickest ones here despite having a compact turbocharged I-4 motor. Due to the turbo, it puts out significantly more torque output than the V6-powered rivals here including the Tacoma and is better at hauling too. On the inside, the Ranger is more spacious than the Tacoma but the robust feel is slightly missing. Moreover, with the Tacoma, you can get an extensive list of off-roading options whereas the options for the Ranger are limited.

Final Verdict

Do you need a reliable and capable pickup that is not huge, and is sturdy too? The Toyota Tacoma comes up as a great option. Yes, it has been showing its age for the last couple of model years now due to its rivals getting upgraded with better engine techs and designs. Despite that, the Tacoma still packs in a decent amount of punch in terms of performance and capabilities that have helped it stay in the picture with its rivals. Moreover, the Tacoma is among the very few midsize pickup trucks that can fit the bill of a budget-oriented buyer as well.
