Overview

Toyota tasted success with the Supra which has garnered a massive cult following across the globe. However, the brand wanted to develop something slightly cheaper, and smaller, yet offering the same fun-to-drive characteristics. By joining hands with Subaru the Toyota 86, later renamed the GR86, saw the light of the day back in 2012. The GR86 also goes around in the market as the Subaru BRZ with slight cosmetic changes but similar mechanicals. Following the redesign in 2021, the coupe was renamed GR86 since it received special tuning from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing wing which is responsible for making high-performance vehicles as well.

Buying Advice

The base trim of the car would do just fine for day-to-day usage purposes and the manual transmission is recommended if you wish to extract the maximum performance. However, the automatic transmission should be your choice if the ADAS features are important to you.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Toyota GR86 will arrive with no significant changes apart from getting a limited-production Special Edition trim. The second-generation GR86 Coupe will be powered by a naturally aspirated H-4 motor and will be blessed with a standard 6-speed manual transmission and an RWD layout as standard. The coupe focuses more on the handling part and sacrifices the NVH levels inside the cabin, resulting in significant cabin noises at high speeds. The price for the 2023 GR86 is expected to start from $28,995 and gets only two trim levels. In its class, the Toyota GR86 rivals the Subaru BRZ, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Features
7.5/10

The 2023 Toyota GR86 will be offered in a total of three trim levels with the third one being a limited-production Special Edition trim. With a slightly higher price tag over the top-end Premium trim, the Special Edition will bring a unique Solar Shift exterior paint along with a high-performance Cat-back exhaust system, and 18-inch forged aluminum wheels with a special matte black finish. Coming to the regular trims, the base model will carry a price tag of $28,925, quite affordable for the fun it offers. In terms of standard features, the coupe gets adequate standard ones such as a limited-slip rear differential, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel along with reach and height adjustments, a fully digital driver's instrument display, and power-operated ORVMs with heating among other features. The top-end Premium trim gets slightly bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, supper tires for enhanced traction and performance, aluminum pedals for the driver, and heating for the front seats along with a few others.

Release Date

The 2023 Toyota GR86 is expected to be released in September 2022 while the car will start reaching the dealerships by fall 2022.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

Even though the Toyota GR86 prioritizes performance and handling over fuel economy, the excellent tuning of the powertrain allows the car to return some commendable fuel economy figures too. Within the city limits, the GR86 returns an average EPA rating of 19mpg while highway driving sees the number rising to 26mpg. Due to the compact size, the coupe gets a 13.2-gallon gas tank which is rather disappointing in terms of driving range figures.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata has the highest fuel economy numbers here along with having the highest driving range figures too. The Volkswagen Golf GTI offers a balanced scenario in situations like these. The GTI gets a similar-sized gas tank to the BRZ while it crosses the 300-mile driving range.

Interior
6.5/10

The interior of the 2023 Toyota GR86 will keep you engaged as much as possible with its driver-centric and sporty dashboard design. The steering wheel doesn’t get any flat-bottom design however, it gets leather-wrapping with height and reach adjustments right from the beginning. As a result, finding the correct driving position is as easy as it can get. The dashboard packs in a complex and catchy design within a small area and also offers toggle-like buttons below the climate controls for an enhanced sporty feel. The touchscreen infotainment display sits in the middle of the dashboard below the central air-con vents and gets physical control buttons too. The driver gets a big 7-inch instrument panel that displays plenty of information about the car including the speedo and the tacho as well. The seats don't get any leather treatment on either of the trims however, the Premium trim gets attractive faux suede seats with pure leather bolsters for additional comfort. On the Premium trim, the front seats get a heating feature too for a comfortable ride during the winter. The front seats are spacious and comfortable, even for long trips while the rear seats are mostly impractical, and only prove to be useful for keeping luggage items. The overall headroom is on the shorter side due to the compact size of the car and tall drivers and front co-passengers might brush their heads often while riding, getting in, or getting out of the vehicle. The trunk space is on the shorter side at 6.3 cu-ft only.

The Subaru BRZ has a similar interior to the GR86 and the list of features along with the design is exactly similar as well. Mazdas are known for having some interesting and sporty-looking cabins and the MX-5 Miata’s cabin is nothing different. Despite being compact and only able to accommodate two occupants, Mazda has packed in a neat and functional interior with manual controls. Even though it might seem dated when compared to the rivals here, it actually feels good to have a retro-style cabin layout with manual controls. The gauges are analog too. The Volkswagen Golf GTI gets the best cabin here among its rivals with a modern and driver-centric design on offer. It also gets a proper rear seat, even spacious for adults, and gets a cavernous cargo area too.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Toyota GR86 include:

  • Two-zone automatic climate control
  • Cloth seats/faux suede seats with leather bolstering
  • 7-inch digital instrumentation panel
  • Aluminum driving pedals
  • Heated front seats
  • Special Edition interior badging(Special Edition only)

How intuitive is the 2023 Toyota GR86’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the 2023 Toyota GR86 is rather well-equipped for the price and the type of area it focuses on. As standard, the car gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. The overall feel of the system is nothing out of the ordinary, but it gets the job done quite well and is responsive to touch inputs at all times as well. There are two USB ports within the center armrest that supports quick charging too. Satellite radio is also standard on both the trims and the base trim gets a basic 6-speaker audio setup. The 6-speaker system would disappoint with its audio output, especially in front of the better audio setups you’d find inside the rivals. The Premium trim gets an upgraded 8-speaker setup that offers only a slight improvement over the basic one.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Toyota GR86 include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard
  • Connected services
  • Satellite radio
  • Two USB ports
  • 6-speaker/8-speaker audio system

Exterior
6.5/10

The exterior design of the Toyota GR86 has been slightly toned down during the recent upgrade and it now looks more modern than before with a subtle aggressiveness. The hood now gets a clamshell-like design while the front grille has been lifted up slightly along with a bigger area. From the side, the car looks like an appropriate coupe with a sporty enough appeal, and the vents on the rear of the front fenders further add to the car’s appeal too. The rear end of the car now looks completely different from the previous generation’s model. The duckbill-shaped rear spoiler is a unique touch and the dual exhaust outlets hints strongly towards the sporty traits of the car. To take care of the urban tarmacs quite well, the GR86 gets a decent ground clearance of 5.1 inches.

From the rear and the sides, both the GR86 and the Subaru BRZ look identical but the front end gets a different appearance from the latter. To look different, the BRZ gets a sleeker front grille and that’s the only noticeable change as well. Apart from having sporty and stylish cabins, Mazda vehicles are also praised for their exterior designs too, and the MX-5 Miata stands as a live example. Despite being the smallest one here, it holds its ground with an aggressive front-end design and a sporty stance while the rear-end design gets no catchy design bit. The Volkswagen Golf has been a smart-looking car with an aggressive touch to it. After its latest redesign, the Golf GTI now looks sleeker with a new front fascia design in place. It is also the biggest car here both in flesh and on paper.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels/18-inch alloy wheels
  • 18-inch matte black forged aluminum wheels(Special Edition only)
  • Heated, power-adjustable exterior mirrors
  • Keyless entry
  • High-performance summer tires
  • Duckbill-style rear spoiler
  • Adaptive headlights

Safety

Toyota’s safety systems have always been one of the best in the affordable vehicle markets, and the 2023 GR86 will stay true to it as well. The results for the 2023 model aren't available right now but it is expected to be quite similar to last year’s model. The 2022 Toyota GR86 scored perfectly on a majority of the parameters on the IIHS tests and received the prestigious Top Safety Pick + award too; however, the NHTSA did not test the car. The car gets all the basic safety techs in place while the ADAS features are only available with the automatic transmission models. The standard ADAS features include Adaptive cruise control, Automatic emergency braking, Automatic high-beam headlights, and Lane departure warning.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Pre-collision throttle management system
  • Lead vehicle start alert
  • Reverse automatic braking system

Competition

2023 Toyota GR86 vs 2022 Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ is essentially a rebadged Toyota GR86, and both cars get identical interior designs and mostly identical exterior designs apart from the front fascia. The sharper styling of the GR86 makes it preferable to the BRZ. Both the GR86 and the BRZ run on different engine tuning as per the claims from Toyota and Subaru but the results are extremely subtle. The GR86 is only 1 second quicker than the BRZ in a straight line and also has a stiffer sway bar at the rear when compared to the latter.

2023 Toyota GR86 vs 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a well-known car due to its long presence and it never disappointed either. In terms of handling and performance, it challenges the GR86 fiercely. On the design part too, the Miata has an edge over the GR86 due to its more compact size and a more appealing front fascia. The MX-5 Miata gets an additional advantage of its lower curb weight and delivers much better fuel economy ratings than the GR86 while being both quicker and less powerful than the latter.

2023 Toyota GR86 vs 2022 Ford Volkswagen Golf GTI

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a legendary car, to say the least, and its latest redesign has given it a new lease of life. Now sleeker than before, it gets a proper two-row seating space inside along with an impressive amount of cargo space as well. Despite putting out identical power figures to the GR86, the GTI is much quicker courtesy of its commendable and more torque output. It also makes the GTI more driveable within the city limits as well.

Final Verdict

If you’re on a limited budget or don’t want to spend much, but wish to have an extremely fun-to-drive car, the Toyota GT86 should occupy the top of your preference list. The car gets almost everything right as an enthusiast-friendly coupe and the more powerful engine than the last-gen model is a huge plus. Despite offering razor-sharp handling and taking sharp turns easily, the GR86 can be a practical daily driver too with a decent amount of comfort levels over regular roads. In terms of fuel economy though, the coupe still has some room for improvement, especially when compared to its immediate rivals.

Toyota GR86: The best entry level sports car?

Pros - ["The manual transmission is amazing", "Amazing entry level sports car"]

Cons - ["Not a lot of trunk space and back seats have zero room", "Engine suffers from a lot of oil problems"]

The Toyota GR86 is an excellent first sports car for car enthusiasts. The car averages 22 mpg with its 2.4L boxer 4 engine that puts out over 220 horsepower and 180 lbs-ft of torque to the rear wheels through either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. The manual transmission in this car is excellent for beginners and very easy to learn on. The car is very affordable when compared to most sport...
