Overview

The 2012 Toyota Camry is fully redesigned from top to bottom. Toyota has focused on exterior styling, interior design and suspension setup for enhanced comfort without losing out on its trademark characteristics of practicality and reliability. The 2012 Toyota Camry price starts at $22,055 and an additional $760 is levied as destination charge. As compared to the previous model year, the base price has increased by $1,860.

Featuring a 5-trim lineup of L, LE, SE, XLE and SE Special Edition, the 2012 Toyota Camry MSRP can be an expense of $22,815-$26,755 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2012 Toyota Camry SE Special Edition will cost you $3,940 more than the 2012 Toyota Camry L for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

Going by the list of features and different trim configurations, we would like to suggest the 2012 Toyota Camry SE. Also, an optional 3.5-liter V6 engine offers better performance.

A 2.5-liter engine with 178 horsepower is standard. The 2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 and XLE V6 are equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 268 hp. The redesigned 2012 Toyota Camry interior boasts better materials and cargo space of 15.4 cubic feet. The standard Camry can deliver up to 28 mpg (combined). For more efficiency-conscious buyers, the Camry Hybrid with 40 mpg (combined) is a better choice. Toyota’s midsize sedan offers higher power than the Volkswagen Passat, better gas mileage than the Ford Fusion and higher ground clearance than the Hyundai Sonata

2012 Toyota Camry for sale

The 2012 Toyota Camry L can be leased for a term of 36 months with $315/month and $2,282 due at signing along with an annual mileage limit of 10,000 miles. The same model can be financed for a term of 48 months for as low as 3.49% APR with $484/month and $2,282 down payment. The final APR can be lower or higher depending on the credit score profile of the customer, term duration and additional offers.

For budget-oriented buyers, the used 2012 Toyota Camry can be availed of with a base price of $3,490. Going for older model years like the 2011 Toyota Camry could be a matter of $2,299 and Toyota Camry 2010 can cost as much as $3,499 along with a listing of up to 23,754 in total.

Buying Advice

We would suggest you pick the SE trim. It has an optional engine and shares almost all the features with the top trim. Additionally, with unique exterior features, it holds a different charm.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With two engine options, a practical interior setup, and multiple exterior paint options, along with an exhausting list of features, the 2012 Toyota Camry offers a great deal of customization. As is the case with the safety front too, wherein the 2012 Camry now comes with Toyota's Star Safe System, which brings in plenty of new safety features to the mix. For performance enthusiasts out there, Toyota Camry's 3.5L V6 engine is the setup for you, as apart from the horsepower it puts out, it helps Camry manage a 0-60 MPH time in 5.8 seconds, which is blisteringly quick for this segment. The Toyota Camry is running against opponents such as the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Volkswagen Passat.

Buying Advice

We would suggest you pick the 2012 Toyota Camry SE trim. It has an optional and potent V6 engine and shares almost all the features with the top XLE trim. Additionally, with unique exterior features and also with plenty of sporty feature upgrades, it holds a different charm.

Features
9.0/10

The 2012 Toyota Camry consists of 4 trim levels. The lower L and LE trim are equipped with the 2.5-liter inline-4 engine which can get replaced with a bigger V6 engine on the other two trims. The base trim has all the necessary features to make our time inside the cabin quite comfortable. It has 16-inch steel wheels, manual air conditioning, all basic safety features, and a 6-speaker sound system. The Toyota Camry LE trim adds an optional 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and power tilt/slide moonroof along with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and remote keyless entry.

The top-of-the-range XLE trim features 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and optional amenities such as a Premium HDD Navigation system, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a 10-speaker sound system. Meanwhile, the SE trim distinguishes itself from other trim because of the exterior features such as a port mesh front grille, integrated front, and rear underbody spoilers, and sport side rocker panels. The Convenience Package is given on the SE and XSE trims which adds a rearview camera, Smart Key System with Push Button Start, and Anti-theft system with alarm.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

As per EPA testing, the 2012 Camry with the base 2.5-liter inline-4 engine returns a fuel economy of 25/35/28 MPG in the city/highway/combined respectively. These figures get reduced by 4/5/3 MPG when the more powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine is equipped. Though the 2012 Camry has the best fuel economy figures, a smaller fuel tank does affect its mileage.

On one hand, the Camry is happy with the top spot as the most fuel-efficient car, on the other hand, the Volkswagen Passat is crying for quite the opposite, despite having the biggest fuel tank in the competition. That said, the Sonata is the closest rival to the Camry in terms of fuel efficiency which returns just one MPG less in the city. Lastly, the Fusion has a fuel economy of 23/33/26 MPG in the city/highway/combined respectively.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2012 Toyota Camry's cabin is more opulent and quieter as compared to last year’s model. The seats are covered in the fabric/cloth upholstery as standard which can be replaced with the Sport fabric SofTex and leather upholstery on the higher trims. The 2012 Camry is not stingy when it comes to headroom and legroom. As a result, three adults can easily sit in the second row. Silver trim and Wood-grain-style trim can be seen in the SE and XSE’s cabins.

A 6-way for the driver and 4-way manual adjustment for the front passenger seat is standard which can be replaced with the 8 and 4-way power adjustment for the driver and passenger seat respectively. Some other cabin features given standard are manual tilt and telescopic steering column, Analog instrumentation with LCD display, one 12V power outlet, and rear window defogger. The largest cargo capacity is offered on the Fusion while the 2012 Camry packs the smallest trunk with a cargo capacity of 15.4 cu-ft.

The 2012 Camry comes equipped with the Entune infotainment system which is better than last year’s system. While the base trim has been sacked from having a 6.1-inch touchscreen which is available on every other trim, it does have features such as a 6-speaker sound system, USB port, aux jack, and a CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability to ease the pain. However, on the high trims, you also get plenty of premium features.

Exterior
6.0/10

The exterior design of the new 2012 Toyota Camry is not very enticing. It is smooth and has fine body lines but it fails to capture the required attention. However, on the bright side, its simple design language makes it easy to understand the characteristics of the Camry. At the front, Projector-beam halogen headlights are given, to which auto on/off feature can be added on the higher trims. Integrated fog lights are only limited to the top two trims.

Power outside mirrors with the folding feature is standard on the lower two trims while the upper two trims add a heating feature to it. One-touch power tilt and sliding power moonroof are given throughout the trim range except for the base trim. The 2012 Camry has standard 16-in. steel wheels which get upgraded to 17-inch alloy wheels on SE and 19-inch alloy wheels on the XSE trim.

The exterior dimensions of the Camry and fellow competitors are in the same ballpark. However, if examined finely, Passat is the longest, and Sonata is the tallest one in the bunch. The Ford Fusion has the shortest wheelbase while the biggest one is offered on the Passat.

Major exterior features are:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Projector-beam halogen headlamps
  • One-touch power tilt/slide moonroof (optional)
  • Acoustic noise-reducing front windscreen (upper two trims)
  • Integrated fog lamps (upper two trims)

Safety
9.0/10

The Toyota Camry has a more rigid body structure, a higher amount of high tensile steel, and redesigned rear suspension, all of which translate into more stability and a stronger chassis. IIHS has picked the 2012 Camry for the ‘Top safety pick’ and awarded ‘Good’ ratings in almost all crash tests. On the other hand, the NHTSA has assigned an overall 5-star safety rating to the same. While all of the trims are equipped with safety features such as smart stop technology, brake assist, and more, the top-tier XLE trim comes with an optional safety connect suite which includes services such as emergency assistance, and stolen vehicles locator, roadside assistance, and automatic collision notification.

Major safety features on offer are:

  • Cruise control
  • Brake assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring (optional)
  • Anti-theft system with alarm (optional)
  • Smart stop technology

Competition
8.0/10

2012 Toyota Camry vs 2012 Ford Fusion

The Toyota Camry straight away gets an undue advantage over the Ford Fusion for being the recently updated car here. On that, the new Camry gets a better-equipped cabin of the two with higher overall cabin space, though at a slight cost of the cargo area. Both sedans do comes evenly matched on paper, but the Camry comes out to be the better performer here, hitting 60 mph a whole second quicker than the Fusion, thanks to its lower curb weight.

Despite the performance, the Camry also comes out as the fuel-efficient sedan here. All this coupled with the fact that the Fusion is really starting to show its age, we just have to hand it over to the ever-so-slightly cheaper Camry for being the better Sedan here.

2012 Toyota Camry vs 2012 Hyundai Sonata

The sixth generation Hyundai Sonata just came in hot last year and should be the most capable car here taking on the Toyota Camry, which surprisingly it does. Boasting a longer wheelbase, the Sonata has tons of legroom on offer compared to the Camry. Also, Hyundai walks away with the bigger cabin and the bigger fuel tank here.

However, the laid-back engine character of the Sonata causes it to fall back in the performance department, often posting 0 to 60 MPH timings slower than the Camry which is down by about 22 horses. Also, one thing to note here is the fact that the reliability quotient of the Camry is something that can’t be matched by the Sonata.

Final Verdict

The Toyota Camry is a great overall package that excels in every area you can think of. Although competitors such as Hyundai Sonata have given it a tough fight, in the end, with impressive reliability ratings, perfect safety scores, potent engine choices, and more, the 2012 Toyota Camry certainly takes the win for one of the most impressive midsize sedans in the market right now. Therefore, we certainly recommend you bring the newly redesigned Camry home.
