Overview
The 2012 BMW 5 Series Sedan is a midsize sedan offered in 3 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $46,900. For that price, it mainly competes with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan, the Jaguar XF Sedan, and the Audi A6 Sedan. Between 3 trims, the 5 Series offers 3 powertrains. The base engine is a 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 capable of making 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. If more power is required, there is also a 300 horsepower and 400 horsepower-making 3.0L turbocharged Inline-6 engine and 4.4L turbocharged V8 engine respectively. The base engine is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission which is optional on the latter two engines. Furthermore, both Inline-6 and V8 engines have a default arrangement with a 6-speed manual transmission. The 5 Series reaches 60 mph from zero in 6.2 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 5.7 seconds and 5.0 seconds with the 3.0L Turbo Inline-6 engine and 4.4L Turbo V8 engine respectively. Depending on the powertrain, the 5 Series can manage a combined fuel economy between 17 and 27 mpg. While we're on the topic of choices, the 13 striking colors the 5 Series comes in really pull you towards itself.
