Overview

The 2017 Porsche Macan may strike you to be smaller than the conventional SUVs but it definitely wouldn't give you a chance to complain about its muscular looks, extravagant performance, and massive cabin space in a less expensive price tag. Starting at a price of MSRP $47,500, the Porsche Macan now gets a new turbocharged engine apart from the other optional three engines running on point. Further changes include a new GTS Macan model, that should offer you a perfect combination of a sporty and agile driving demeanor.  Slotted below the Porsche Cayenne, the 2017 Macan goes up against the likes of the Mercedes Benz GLC-Class, the Audi Q5, and the BMW X4.

Buying Advice

If we had to recommend the best trim of the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV, it would be the Macan S. it is fast and fun to drive and the reasonable price range makes total sense, give the balanced performance among all in its class. Along with the Macan S you get Bi-Xenon dynamic headlights coupled with daytime running lights and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a 10-speaker sound system. You can also go the optional features like colored instrument dials, carbon fiber door trim pieces and a panoramic roof, leathered dashboard, suede front and rear seats can be really tempting.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Porsche Macan SUV is not all that expensive from the 2020 Macan. In fact, Porsche has dropped the base trim prices down, as it now starts from an MSRP of $47,500. Often dubbed as a smaller version of Cayenne with a smaller engine, this Macan definitely puts up scorching performances when needed. Deriving its power from the new 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine linked to the standard 7-speed DCT, it is supremely efficient and impressive while moving around town.

The 2017 Porsche Macan obeys the driver obediently, thanks to the highly responsive steering, brakes, and powertrain, all working together in harmony. It might not be as peppy as Porsche's classic sports car lineup, but it surely is close. Coming onto the safety aspect, Porsche also adds in a couple more active and passive safety features as standard, acing in the segment on that front too.

Features
9.9/10

The 2017 Porsche Macan is available in four trim levels, namely the base, S, GTS, and Turbo. prices for the same start from an MSRP of $47,500 for the base trim and go all the way up to $76,000 for the top-most Macan Turbo trim. Luxurious in its essence, Porsche surely delivers on the feature front of the 2017 Macan. The premium factor only takes a hike as you move up the trim table. All of the said trims are powered by turbocharged engine units but derived to different tunes of capacity.

We recommend

If we had to recommend the best trim of the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV, it would be the Macan GTS. The new trim on the block is everything you were looking for bundled in one compact sports SUV. For the premium price of MSRP $67,200, the Macan GTS is much more sportier than the rest of the trim lineup, courtesy of its sport-tuned adaptive suspension bits and the blisteringly impressive sports exhaust.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2017 Porsche Macan, with the 2.0L turbo-four unit in place, delivers 20 MPG in the city and 25 miles to the gallon out on the highway. Whereas, when equipped with all the other turbocharged engines, the 2017 Macan delivers 17 MPG in the city and 23 miles to the gallon out on the highway. Housing the most powerful engine and having the best acceleration figures among the rivals, the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV is expected to be low on fuel efficiency and that's totally acceptable to us.

Nevertheless, despite the lower MPG numbers posted, the Macan has a segment-best 19.8-gallon fuel tank, which allows it to stretch out to 495 miles on the go. Topping the fuel economy charts and recovering from its earlier loss, the Mercedes Benz has the best ratings of 22 MPG in the cities, 28 MPG in the highways, and 24 MPG combined, courtesy of its low-powered engines.

Interior
7.0/10

The Macan has an exceptionally well-crafted cabin, with materials that have an upscale look and feel to them - Edmunds

The interior space is where the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV suffers the most due to the lack of rear space for the back seat passengers. Embroidered in leather upholstery, the seats are plush and extremely comfortable. Moreover, apart from the heating and ventilation function being offered as standard, all of the seats are 8-way power-adjustable. Moving up the trim lineup will also get you Alcantara seats, and 18-way adjustable heated sport seats.

Also, the standard of interior fittings is the best in the business. The luxury fittings are coupled with sporty elements quite tastefully. Despite the aggressive demeanor, the interior oozes out practicality as per your needs. All four competitors share an equal passenger capacity of five. As for the seating capacity at hand, Audi boasts the bigger cabin room, amongst others.

Backed by the Porsche Communication Management system, it also has access to Internet feeds through the Aha Radio. Further connections in the form of 12-volt power outlets are spread out throughout the cabin for a better passenger experience. And for all the audiophiles out there, Porsche impresses us with either a premium 545-watt 14-speaker Bose surround sound system or an even more premium 1000 watt Burmester system with 16 speakers.

Some of the infotainment features on offer are-

  • 500 watts stereo output

2017 Porsche Macan Cargo Capacity-

The 2017 Porsche Macan with the rear seats folded down has a cargo capacity of 17.7 cu. ft. This is because of the smaller cabin room of the Macan when compared to the rest of the segment. Apart from the usual cargo room, there are a ton of other storage options too inside the cabin. nevertheless, the 17.7 cu. ft of cargo might seem short but is good enough for fitting in a couple of suitcases for your average weekend getaways.

Exterior
8.0/10

Profiled to look a bit like a 3/4-scale Cayenne, the 2017 Macan's tidier proportions are more akin to a tall hatchback than a compact SUV - Kelley Blue Book

The 2017 Porsche Macan SUV is one of the most desirable SUVs in the class, courtesy of its annoyingly good exterior looks. Slotted in between the Cayenne and the Cayman, the Macan also has the ripped muscular silhouette that the rest of the SUVs from the Porsche lineup have. Nevertheless, having said that, the sole difference between the bigger Cayenne and the Macan is the toned-down dimensions.

For 2017, the front end remains the same as the previous iterations, with the same bigger front-end intakes, and the prominent character lines flowing through the sides toward the aged rear end. Although, despite it being aged, the rear end with the sleek taillamps is an iconic Porsche treat. Standard on the Macan is the 17-inch alloys, whereas as you go up the trim ladder, the sizes do increase along with a change in wheel patterns.

Coming to the dimensions, despite having fairly adequate dimensions, the 2017 Macan falls on the compact side of the SUV class.

The only thing the 2017 Porsche Macan SUV tops the table is with its width and also it is the second longest among the four. The Mercedes Benz has the least ground clearance and the most wheelbase length. The Audi Q5 is the heaviest, tallest, and shares the least wheelbase with the Porsche Macan. The BMW is the longest of the four, along with being the least wide, shortest and has the most ground clearance.

Exterior Features

  • Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic light system

  • Noise isolating and thermally protected privacy glass
  • Panoramic roof system

Safety
9.9/10

Judging a sports proficient SUV in terms of the safety it provides, might not seem the best idea. As even the crash-test agencies have yet not put the 2017 Porsche Macan through the wall. So neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS ratings are available. Nevertheless, for 2017, Porsche has definitely upped their game in terms of safety prowess, with the latest driver-assistance features available. Apart from the standard safety features available on point, the other available features in this list include-

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Lane Departure Warning system
  • Forward Collision Warning system
  • Adaptive cruise control system
  • Blind-spot warning system

2017 Porsche Macan vs 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

The highly competent 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 has forever been the go-to SUV in this segment. Backed by a luxurious yet practical interior unlike the Porsche Macan, it also houses the best-in-class driver-assistance features like crosswind assist, collision prevention, and adaptive suspension.

Comparing the two, the Porsche Macan feels more athletic on the road and you get a sense of agility, thanks to the stiff chassis, whereas the Merc offers a comfortable ride throughout. Although, as and when the GLC 300 loses out on the powertrain front, it gains upon the fuel efficiency front.

2017 Porsche Macan vs 2017 Audi Q5

Right off the bat, we can say that the 2017 Porsche Macan is the better-looking SUV out of the two. While the Macan is more aggressive and agile with its sports-tuned suspension bits and sports exhaust, the Q5, on the other hand, is more comfortable and subtle while considering riding dynamics.

The Q5 drives on all four wheels receiving power from the 8-speed automatic transmission connected to the 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which is not only powerful enough but aids in good MPG figures too. The 2017 Q5 is also the most spacious SUV of the lot.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Porsche Macan is everything you might want in a super aggressive and agile midsize luxury SUV. With its sporty demeanor, courtesy of the sports exhaust and sporty suspension unit, the Macan is aces on the performance front, but it loses out to the rest of the competition in terms of interior cabin space and fuel efficiency. That said, practicality does not take a backseat with the Macan completely, but for the price of $47,500, it is adequate enough.
