Overview

After its launch last year in 2010, the 2011 GMC Terrain carries forward itself with no major change onboard. As a replacement to the Pontiac Torrent, the Terrain effortlessly delivers on its expectations. Built on the Theta platform shared with the Chevrolet Equinox, this gasoline-powered compact crossover is a five-seater family hauler that comes with two engine options. It offers decent performance, excellent fuel economy figures, great practicality, and top-notch safety ratings at a great price point.

Buying Advice

Since the Terrain is more likely a people-hauler with some efficiency expectations, we recommend getting the SLE-2 trim with the smaller 2.4L Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 engine, as it has all the creature comforts like automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a banging 8-speaker Pioneer sound system, at a great price.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Since compact crossovers have quickly become the go-to choice for a family-friendly sport-utility that's cheaper, more fuel-efficient, and better suited to tighter urban confines than bigger SUVs, it is a segment that is hot with fresh options to choose from. Thankfully, the GMC Terrain checks all those desired boxes right. Its competitive pricing starts at an MSRP of $24,250 further makes it a challenging proposition up against the Nissan Xterra, Mazda CX-7, and Jeep Compass.

Features
8.0/10

Buyers can grab the 2011 GMC Terrain in four available trim levels; SLE1, SLE2, SLT1, and SLT 2. A 2.4-liter inline-4 cylinder and a 6-speed automatic transmission come standard and so is front-wheel drive. However, an optional AWD can be paired with either of the trim choices. For power hunters, there’s also an optional V6 on the cards.

In terms of equipment, the Terrain remains basic in the entry-level models but spices up things in the higher models with amenities like power tailgate, rear parking sensors, voice-controlled navigation, rear-seat entertainment, sunroof, and more.

We Recommend

Since the Terrain is more likely a people-hauler with some efficiency expectations, we recommend getting the SLE-2 trim with the smaller 2.4L Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 engine, as it has all the creature comforts like automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a banging 8-speaker Pioneer sound system, at a great price.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Depending on the trim you choose, the 2011 GMC Terrain comes with two engine options: a 2.4-liter inline-4 pumping up 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 264 hp and 222 lb-ft. While both engines come standard with front-wheel drive and a 6-Speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive is optional across all trims.

While the efficiency-oriented Inline-4 engine gets to 60 MPH from a standstill in 9.4 seconds, the larger V6 is only about a second faster, getting up there in 8.3 seconds. Even after having direct injection, it is on the slower side as compared to its rivals. An "ECO" button on the dash in the four-cylinder model lowers the torque converter lockup speed to 1,125 rpm for enhanced efficiency, although then, the engine feels a little less responsive. The lack of torque low down does make it slower in covering the quarter-mile as well.

Among the competition here, the sportiest of the bunch is the real-wheel-drive 2011Nissan Xterra X, with its powerful 261 hp 4.0-liter V6. It also does the 60 MPH dash in just 7.8 seconds and has the highest top speed of the bunch at 146 MPH. While the 2011 Mazda CX-7 iSport is the least powerful and the slowest of the bunch, it is the cheapest of them all. The 2011 Jeep Compass Limited is moderately powerful and is good for regular light-footed driving and lies midway in terms of acceleration clocking 8.9 seconds to the 60MPH mark.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Terrain’s base SLE-1 trim with the 2.4-liter pot delivers good economy with 22 MPG in the city, and an outstanding 32 MPG on the highway. Combined with the 18-gallon fuel tank, this compact crossover can drive for a whopping 576 miles before running out of gas. Even though some of them are underpowered as compared to the GMC Terrain, this is the highest out of all its rivals.

At 13.6-gallons, the 2011 Jeep Compass has the smallest fuel tank out of all the vehicles, and the second-best fuel economy out of the aforementioned list. The large 4.0-liter V6 on the 2011 Nissan Xterra is a gas guzzler, as it returns the worst fuel economy at just 16 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. Even with the largest gas tank in the segment, it can only drive for 464 miles before running dry.

Interior
8.0/10

Although it is dimensionally the smallest amongst all its rivals, the 2011 GMC Terrain can comfortably seat five people at once. The cabin feels very solid and utilitarian. The materials used in the entire cabin are apt for a vehicle this expensive, but they also don’t scream economy, as they are quite quality-oriented wherever laid a hand upon. The leather used is supple, yet hard-wearing and the plastics even on the lower down areas are not as hard as expected.

The front seats are quite wide and mildly bolstered, making it an extremely comfortable place to be in. Thanks to a sliding bench arrangement, the rear-seat legroom is surprisingly good despite the vehicle's compact dimensions. The standard cargo capacity is 31.6 cubic feet, which is the second-highest in the segment, which can be increased to 63.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. This compact crossover also comes with an oversized glovebox, a covered storage binnacle above the center stack, a laptop-sized center armrest storage bin, and two-tier storage within the doors for added storage space.

While its rivals are pretty much similar in dimension on the interior front, they do vary when comparing the cargo capacity. The 2011 Nissan Xterra has the biggest trunk at 36.3 cubic feet, and the 2011 Jeep Compass has the smallest one at just 22.7 cubic feet. These vehicles will fit whatever you throw at them because the vertical volume is simply abysmal given their 'SUV-esque' design.

Major interior features include:

  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Available heated front seats
  • Leather upholstery and leather steering
  • Power driver seat
  • Automatic climate control
  • Available sunroof
  • Adjustable steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2011 GMC Terrain’s infotainment unit?

Although the infotainment system on the Terrain comes standard with the usual array of features like AM/FM Stereo, Auxiliary Audio Input, MP3 Player, Satellite Radio and a USB port, stuff like a touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, DVD Player, Rear seat entertainment system is an optional package that can be chosen when ordering yours. The audio is channeled through a six-speaker sound system that can be upgraded to an optional eight-speaker Pioneer sound system as well. OnStar does come as a standard feature on every trim of the GMC Terrain.

Some of the features of the infotainment system are:

  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio
  • DVD-Player(optional)
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • USB Port
  • Navigation System
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2011 GMC Terrain is quite polarising to look at, because some people either love it when they look at it for the first time, or they just loathe it every time they see one passing by. It can vary from being too bland to being outright handsome and rounded. The vehicle is quite hard to miss with its chunky fenders, upright stance, and broad signature grille with the famous logo in the middle.

Rolling on 17” wheels along with factory tinted windows, the compact crossover looks quite good from the side as well. It weighs 3853 lbs and is slightly longer than its rivals. While it has the sense of traditional SUV approach, it spices things well with its clean hood and shoulder line. However, the raised fender flares do add some muscle to its overall persona making it appealing to the eyes.

In comparison, the Nissan Xterra is the heaviest car in the segment, at a whopping 4143 lbs., while the Jeep Compass gets the award for being the lightest, shortest and thinnest at 3259 lbs, 173.4 inches, and 69.3 inches, respectively. All three competitors of the GMC, however, have better and similar ground clearance of 8.1 inches, making them apt for off-road adventures. With its short overhangs, the GMC Terrain does look a bit funny with its flared fenders.

Few major exterior features include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Fog lights
  • Tinted windows
  • Heated mirrors
  • Rear Defrost
  • Keyless Entry

Safety
9.0/10

The 2011 model year of the Terrain has scored incredibly well in the crash tests done by NHTSA, scoring four stars overall, four stars in case of a frontal impact, and five stars in the side-impact department. It also gets five-star results in the tough new side pole test. This compact crossover has also impressed the IIHS, as they have awarded the vehicle with the highest score of "good" in frontal offset, side impact, rear impact, and roof-strength tests, and finally awarding it a Top Safety Pick designation.

Standard safety features such as anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags with dual-stage frontal and thorax side-impact, driver and front passenger, and protection for head curtain side-impact at both front and rear outboard seating positions are all present. Its large ORVMs and reversing camera also aid on the visibility front.

Other salient safety features include:

  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Front side airbags
  • Curtain side airbags
  • Rear parking sensors (optional)

Final Verdict

The 2011 GMC Terrain is a no-nonsense way of getting your family places without spending a fortune. The interior is quite spacious, and it has a long list of features to offer. It is also extremely safe and does protect its occupants in case of an emergency. It also delivers incredible fuel economy whilst chugging people along to places. The two engine options further sweeten the deal by offering variety. We would definitely recommend it to be on the top of your list if you’re out in the market looking for something that can haul your family, as well as get you places without breaking the bank.

              GMC Terrain

Pros - ["Room interior", "Loved the back up camera in the rear view mirror"]

Cons - ["Transmission was always an issue", "Was terrible on gas."]

Overall the car was good to me even though o maybe got it on a bad deal. For the most part I felt safe in the car but was a true gas guzzler. Many electrical and motor problems that at the end of the day was probably more trouble than it was worth.
