... quart engine. I was not happy with the car already. The next month, we had " Volvo on call, serviced required" on the dash. Well, I already reset the maintenance light with the oil change, so I took it to the Dealer the next morning, they told me I need to make an appointment, their about 10 days to 2 weeks before they could even look at the car, Really! I asked them if the car had stopped and was told in, could they look at it then? They said still 2 weeks! We only haveRead More

Apart from being an industry innovator in terms of safety, Volvo has done a lot more we can be proud of. The 2022 Volvo XC90 is the brand’s flagship SUV and showcases the best of technology from the Swedish manufacturer. As far as reliability goes, Volvo has a score of 3.5 out of 5 which is an above-average rating but its cars are a bit more expensive to maintain than some competitors. Warranty-wise too, the 2022 XC90 holds an average limited warranty covering only 4 years or 50,000 miles, and a powertrain warranty that covers just 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The average cost of owning a Volvo XC90 for five years is about $63,199 including depreciation, insurance, maintenance, fuel costs, and so on. The car is already priced at $51,995 which makes this expensive and its reliability becomes a factor that is important to focus on. Going head-to-head against competitors such as the Genesis GV80, the Porsche Cayenne, and the BMW X5, the car has a lot to do to capture the market. Let us find out more about the Volvo XC90's reliability through this article.

2022 Volvo XC90 User Complaints and Problems-

Although Volvo is slightly more expensive to maintain than competitors, many people seem to swear by it because it presents a lot of unique attributes. In terms of reliability problems, it seems to fall on the safer side of European car ownership. Some issues are common like Volvo XC90 door lock problems and the hybrid versions have reported some issues as well. But there haven’t been many issues that threaten the Volvo's safety in recent times.

The Volvo XC90 T8 charging problem has not found a solution yet from the manufacturer. Several owners have raised complaints regarding these issues and we shall look into them in detail below. It is too early to tell anything conclusive about the 2022 model but since it is part of the same generation, one can apply the results of the 2021 model year.

Mechanical problems:

  1. One owner stated that the emission control system light was on in the car when the total mileage was just about 2700 miles. The engine also got considerably louder and the hybrid system failed to function properly.

Electrical system problems:

  1. One owner reported that there was a check engine light illuminated at about 11,000 miles showing a problem that required a software update. The IEM module was set to be replaced because it causes a loss of propulsion from the rear axle. However, after replacing the IEM module and clearing the DTC codes, there was still a warning saying that a software update was needed. The hybrid battery fails to retain charge and depletes at a very fast rate, which is also a known problem for the XC90 T8.
  2. Another owner has reported a problem with the electric parking brake engaging while driving at highway speeds. This happened several times and resulted in the car abruptly stopping in traffic, which could cause an accident.
  3. One contact has observed the sound from the Bowers and Wilkins sound system two times before 1400 miles. The sound can be described as a loud pop and following this, there is no sound emitted from the speakers. These include sounds for feedback, turn signals, parking sensors, etc. The problem fixes itself after restarting the car but occurs again after a while. The owner has seen multiple complaints on online forums regarding the Volvo XC90 pop sound issue.

Interior problems:

  1. One owner reported that the backup camera display was distorted and blurry. This causes a lack of information to the driver and is a safety concern.

One will find that there are only a few complaints about this car. The 2021 model had a total of five complaints but some of them had a common pattern across several owners. Looking back at other model years, the car seems to have a very low number of complaints consistently. Let us take a look at the history of recalls to find out how the manufacturer has responded to these complaints.

2022 Volvo XC90 Recalls

As some owners have duly reported, online forums have started discussing the presence of common issues in the Volvo XC90. It would only be fair if the manufacturer follows these complaints up with recalls and rectifies the faults. The 2022 model has not had any recalls yet but the 2021 model had three recalls issued. They have been listed below and can give an accurate picture of how reliable the manufacturer intends the car to be.

Some of the issues that have troubled owners have not met with the recalls. And like the complaints state, they have not had adequate solutions from the dealers either. The manufacturer has only bothered correcting recalls that have affected the safety of the car directly, leaving owners to deal with the problems that are present.

Which model year of the Volvo XC90 should you avoid?

The current generation of the Volvo XC90 has been in production since 2016 and it is one of the most reliable European midsize SUVs around. This car has seen a consistently low number of problems being reported about it. Apart from pioneering safety, its reliability has been good. But if you look at the 2004 Volvo XC90 problems, you would be rather worried about the car because it had a lot of issues. The previous generation also had several issues surrounding Volvo XC90 V8 problems. The engine was then stopped by the manufacturer and you can buy any model year from the second generation without hesitation.

Should you buy the 2022 Volvo XC90?

The 2022 Volvo XC90 is an excellent luxury car that is well loaded and feels nice to drive. It is extremely quiet, comfortable, and plush to be inside. It also has a very decent reputation when it comes to reliability. The SUV lives up to the reputation of the manufacturer despite having a few problems that have troubled owners. It is one of the best SUVs we have around and is one we would recommend to our readers as well.
