The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax is available in four trims SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 Edition. The base SR trim is only available on the Tundra Double Cab cab style. The 2018 Tundra CrewMax can only be had in the 5.5-foot bed length but offers two engine options a 4.6-liter V8 which is standard on the SR5 trim and the 5.7-liter V8 which is optional on the SR5 but standard on the rest all trims. Coming to the trims the SR5 trim starts at $35,450 for the 2WD model powered by a 4.6-liter V8 while the SR5 is powered by the 5.7-liter V8 costs $36,720 and getting the SR5 in 4WD version costs $3,050 more. Next comes the Limited trim that starts at $42,450 that comes with bigger alloy wheels than the base trim, all-LED exterior lights, and more creature comfort features compared to the SR5 trim.

The Platinum trim is the top-of-the-line trim of the Tundra CrewMax and starts at $47,280. The Platinum trim upgrades the sound system to a JBL unit, adds more creature comfort features, and a sunroof. For 2018, the Tundra CrewMax gets one more trim i.e. 1794 Edition trim which is similarly priced as the Platinum trim and just adds special edition exterior and interior cosmetic enhancements. Other than the standard equipment list, you also get optional packages and two of them worth mentioning include the SR5's upgrade package and the other being a TRD Pro package available on all but Platinum trim. The TRD Pro package adds TRD-style alloy wheels, skid plates, more off-road specific shock absorbers, LED headlights, off-road tires, and tow hooks. While the SR5's upgrade package contains the features which are standard on the Limited trim and not available on the SR5 trim.

We suggest going with the SR5 trim powered by the 5.7-liter V8 engine and add the TRD Pro package to it. This combo will make the Tundra the ultimate pickup truck among the standard Tundra. With the suggested combo the price of theTundra CrewMax SR5 with TRD Pro package would only reach forty-two grands which is similar to the Limited trim but for the price, you would get a more off-road capable truck that comes equipped with all the essential features without breaking the bank.

The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax returns an EPA estimated gas mileage of 15 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg combined, opt for the 4WD and there is a drop of one mpg across the three parameters. While the 5.7-liter V8-powered Tundra returns 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. The Tundra powered by the 4.6-liter V8 gets a 26.4-gallon fuel tank while the 5.7-liter V8-powered Tundra gets a larger 38-gallon fuel tank.

Being a V8-powered truck there is no reason to expect that the Tundra would be able to beat the gas mileage figure of the V6-powered rivals. The Ford F-150 is the most efficient among all and returns 4 mpg more in the city, 6 mpg more on the highway, and 6 mpg more combined compared to the Tundra.

2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax Seating and Comfort

The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax cabin isn't luxurious by any means but it is well-built and well-put-together. The dials and controls are plus-size for ease of use and there is a lot of empty space around the dash which inadvertently diverts your attention to the hard-touch plastics all-around the dash. That said, the Tundra is a big truck and there is lots of space inside the cabin and the high seating position along with the flat dash ensures you have a good view of what's outside.

The seats of the Toyota Tundra can be had in two configurations the lower model gets bench seats taking the seating capacity to six passengers while the Limited and higher trims get more comfortable bucket seats but offers seating for only five. The Tundra CrewMax comes in only a shortbed configuration so the available space is utilized for providing more legroom inside the cabin.

The Tundra isn't the most spacious truck among all be it in terms of headroom, shoulder room, or legroom even though it has the longest wheelbase, is taller, and wider than the other trucks. For taller folks, the Chevrolet Silverado offers the best front-row headroom and legroom while those who carry passengers in the rear seats should go for the Ford F-150 which offers almost similar front and rear legroom with the rear legroom being the highest among all the trucks.

The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on Toyota's Entune interface. The Entune interface isn't the most user-friendly in the segment but the touchscreen remains the best in the business. Standard features list gest smartphone connectivity only via Bluetooth, HD Radio, SiriusXM, six-speaker sound system, navigation, etc. Higher trims either add a nine-speaker sound system or a 12-speaker JBL sound system an integrated navigation system.

The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax looks haven't been updated recently and it has started to look dated among the rivals which have received an all-new exterior now. That said, with time though the grille of the Toyota Tundra has got bigger than usual and now almost dominates the front fascia of a truck which is 79.9-inches in width. Lower down you get a chunky front bumper that gets chrome finished end caps and houses the foglights.

Move to the side and you will see that the Tundra CrewMax measuring 228.98-inches in length and 145.7-inches in wheelbase gets the biggest cab and the shortest bed. The 2018 Tundra is the tallest truck with the highest ground clearance and the longest wheelbase among all. While the Ford F-150 is the longest while the Chevrolet Silverado is the widest truck among all. The Tundra is 3-inches smaller than the F-150 and 0.1-inch less wide than the Silverado.

The 2018 Ford F-150 not only looks modern but offers a better toning and payload capacity compared to the 208 Tundra. The Tundra powered by the V8 engine although manages to beat the less powerful V6 engine-powered F-150 in the 0-60 and quarter-mile runs the latter beast the Tundra when it comes to gas mileage figures.

The cabin of the Tundra is also no match to the modern and sophisticated cabin of the Ford F-150. That said, the F-150 also gets better cabin space in both rows compared to the Tundra. Thus we see no reason why you would not go with America's highest-selling pickup truck i.e. the Ford F-150.

2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado is a couple of grand expensive than the Toyota Tundra but except for the power and performance from the big V8 of the Tundra, there is hardly anything where it can beat the Silverado. The Silverado gets higher towing and payload capacity has a larger cargo volume and is much more fuel-efficient than the Tundra.

The built quality of the Tundra and the Silverado is similar but the modern cabin of the Silverado finds more favor among the buyers these days. So unless you are a Toyota fanboy, the Silverado is the better choice over the aging Toyota Tundra.

The 2018 Toyota Tundra CrewMax is among the most reliable and competent off-road trucks in this segment but the old and aging Tundra is now threatened by the updated and better-equipped rivals. The Tundra offers the V8 engine as standard with the choice of two displacements for the engine but still, the gas mileage of both the engines is the lowest in the segment. The Tundra is although quick of the line and offers good power but being quicker won't cut it for a pickup truck unless you are either a Ford F-150 Raptor or RAM 1500 TRX.

The cabin and the ride quality of the Tundra are also lagging among the rivals and there are better driving and more comfortable pickup truck available at the same price point. With the 2018 Tundra, Toyota has tried to up the safety game of the Tundra but the safety ratings say otherwise. Therefore, just the reliability of a T-badge won't cut it for the aging Tundra this time.
