Overview

Ever since its inception, the Subaru BRZ has been a sportscar that pleases any true driver. The 2015 Subaru BRZ is a 2+2, rear wheel drive sports car, which incorporates Subaru's "Pure Handling Delight" driving performance and safety technologies in order to deliver to the driver a safe, comfortable, steering response, and high levels of detailing inside and out.

Buying Advice

As all trims come equipped with the same powertrain and a long list of features, the base Premium model would be an ideal choice for most buyers. For those who want the automatic transmission, you'll need to choose the Limited model.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2015 Subaru BRZ is an affordable rear-wheel drive sports car, sold in two body styles: Coupe and Convertible where we will be reviewing the coupe. It faces off against other prominent coupes like the Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z and Chevrolet Camaro.

Features
7.0/10

The 2015 Subaru BRZ is offered in three trim levels: Premium, Limited, and Series.Blue. All Subaru BRZ models feature a 200-horsepower boxer engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive as standard. A 6.1-inch touch screen, navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a USB port, leather seats, remote keyless entry, cruise control, a limited slip differential, and 17-inch alloy wheels are among the features standard on the vehicle. There is a new Series.Blue edition this year. Only 1,000 of the Series.Blue will be produced. It adds aerodynamic body styling, black wheels, illuminated brake calipers, accent stitching on the interior and a black-and-blue interior scheme.

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

Subaru's 2015 BRZ is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with a 2.0-liter flat-four engine that produces 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. There is a six-speed manual transmission as standard and a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters as an option, except on the series.Blue, which has a manual transmission only. Its power is adequate, but not exciting.

The 2015 Subaru Boxer engine is trouble free with lower maintenance thanks to its use of direct injection, dual overhead cams enhancing durability, greater efficiency, and overall cleanliness. This car can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, while it takes 14.9 seconds to finish a quarter-mile.

Nissan's 370Z and Chevy Camaro both have V6 engines, and their larger engines have more horsepower and torque than Subaru's. The Ford Mustang with an Inline-4 turbocharged engine is also more powerful than the BRZ. Thus, all three cars are faster than the Subaru, but the 370Z takes the title.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

In spite of its dearth of power and acceleration, the 2015 Subaru BRZ drives far more efficiently than its competitors. This sports car gets good fuel economy, especially when paired with its manual transmission: 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The BRZ's fuel efficiency increases to 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway when coupled with the automatic transmission.

While the BRZ has the best combined mileage in this comparison, the Mustang comes in last with a combined mileage of 20 mpg. There is no difference between the fuel tanks of the Nissan 370Z and the Ford Mustang--they hold 19 gallons each. BRZ's fuel tank holds 13.2 gallons of fuel, which will enable it to travel 330 miles on one tank.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2015 Subaru BRZ interior is designed to provide a relaxing cabin with seating for up to four passengers. The Subaru BRZ makes use of lightweight materials to the maximum extent to ensure that you're not adding pounds while adding features. The lightweight cabin is packed with thoughtful touches and upgrades that make every ride enjoyable. With features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, Keyless Access with Push-Button Start, standard heated front seats -- they're just a few of the details that make your time spent in the Subaru BRZ that much more enjoyable.

The Subaru BRZ has comfortable bucket seats in front with plenty of legroom. In spite of its coupe nature, it can accommodate 4 people. Despite the fact that backseats are available, they are best suited to children. Having little room on either side makes it very difficult to stretch your legs, and the center tunnel makes hip room extremely difficult. With just 6.9 cubic feet of cargo space, the trunk is also quite small. However, folding down the mostly wasted back seat dramatically increases cargo space.

In terms of space, the Ford Mustang is the most spacious option. Chevrolet and Nissan follow closely behind. There is plenty of legroom in the Mustang's front and second rows. In terms of cargo space, the Camaro has the most with 13.5 cu-ft followed by Nissan with 6.9 cu-ft. Major interior features include-

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Cloth seats
  • Proximity keyless entry/ignition
  • Heated front seats
  • Front bucket seats
  • Full folding bench rear seat
  • Leather wrapped steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2015 Subaru BRZ’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Subaru BRZ infotainment system is designed with the customer in mind and offers a new wave of connectivity, which allows for new levels of convenience and control. 2015 Subaru BRZ standard features include a navigation system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, HD Radio, a USB port, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker stereo. The audio system sounds great, however the infotainment unit is not intuitive as its rival’s. Some other salient infotainment features include:

  • 6.1-inch touchscreen
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity
  • 8-speaker audio system
  • USB port/connectivity
  • Satellite HD radio
  • Navigation system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2015 Subaru BRZ is a very high quality car with excellent engineering and a fun drive. For 2015, BRZ receives subtle styling changes to its front end, back fascia and rear taillights. It also features a stiffer chassis with a shorter wheelbase, wider tires and a lowered center of gravity. 17-inch alloy wheels underpin the vehicle, and LEDs illuminate the front fascia.

The look of the BRZ coupe is sporty and muscular, with the front bumper integrated into the new, more aggressive grille with vertical fog lights. The body sides use a straight "cut line" that adds depth and support to the body. The BRZ weighs 3530 pounds and measures 188.3 inches in length, making it a very sleek and aggressive looking coupe.

There is no doubt that the Subaru BRZ is the most compact car among this group of 4, while the others are much longer and wider, and therefore heavier. Ford Mustang's ground clearance is the highest, while the 370Z's is the lowest. Camaro offers the longest wheelbase here as well as the longest car here. Few major exterior features include-

  • Fully Automatic Projector Beam Headlamps
  • LED running lights
  • LED Brakelights
  • Front Fog Lamps
  • Wing Spoiler
  • Power Heated Side Mirrors
  • Rocker Panel Extensions
  • 17-inch Alloy Wheels

Safety
9.0/10

Subaru's BRZ was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS in 2015. The BRZ scored Good in all other tests and Acceptable in the small overlap test. Overall, the 2015 BRZ received five stars from the NHTSA, with five stars for side collisions and five stars for rolling over. Four out of five stars were awarded to the BRZ in frontal crash testing. The 2015 Subaru BRZ is equipped with antilock brakes, electronic stability control, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags as standard. We regret that this car offers no driver assistance features as standard. Other salient safety features include:

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control
  • Available Blind Spot Monitor
  • \Auto-Leveling Headlights
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Final Verdict

With its low center of gravity and wide stance, the 2015 Subaru BRZ is designed to pull all sorts of impressive, tail-happy slides. Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel-drive system keeps the driver in control all the time. Its 2+2 seating provides generous space for four friends to hit the road on a memorable journey in a well-balanced sports coupe that you can still get practicality out of. A thrill seeker will, however, be disappointed with the BRZ, and would be better served by the Nissan 370Z.
