Overview

The scope of cars is just not limited to commuting only. It has extended its arm to be multi-purpose and still affordable at the same time. It becomes an added pleasure if it can give a sudden thrill on a straight-free road. Well, the Subaru Forester is on the track to challenge these sorts of promises and to improve its image.

Buying Advice

Power-Heated Seats for comfort and Adaptive Suspension for handling dynamics have been caged in the Premium trim. Not just that, it has nice spacing and rooms for you to settle down easily just like other trims. Even one can have a better powertrain variant with it. Since the Premium has the touch of both comfort and exhilaration and that too at a relatively lower price, it makes sense to go for it. Touring could have also been the choice but it has a huge expense surge which might not be economic for many.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Four variations in trims and a starting price of just $22,195 may entice many to give it a glance and go through its detailed spec sheet. But that is not enough to make them choose it when they have other rivals as well like the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and the Ford Escape. There have been little tweaks in 2015 as per trim-wise with many of the standards being the same as the predecessors.

Features
8.0/10

There are primarily 4 trims in the Subaru Forester which are Base, Premium, Limited, and Touring. The price tag increases with the offer in the same fashion. The Base trim gets the standard 2.5L Flat-4 which can be ousted by the 2.0 L Turbo in both the Premium and Touring. One can have the grip of the 18" Machined-Accented Alloy Wheels in the Premium trim along with Sports tuned Suspension. Among them, the Limited has the privilege of Power-Assisted Adjustment for seats which is an added benefit. Even the 6-speaker audio set is given a little touch-up to become the Harman-Kardon Sound System in the Touting trim.

The Subaru Forester has some really fascinating safety tech ends from the perspective of those who are quite new to driving which includes the Brake Assist and Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. The Remote Keyless Entry has been kept standard as well along with the EPAS for better handling feedback and inputs. The space availability is also decent with sound ergonomics characteristics.

We Recommend

Power-Heated Seats for comfort and Adaptive Suspension for handling dynamics have been caged in the Premium trim. Not just that, it has nice spacing and rooms for you to settle down easily just like other trims. Even one can have a better powertrain variant with it. Since the Premium has the touch of both comfort and exhilaration and that too at a relatively lower price, it makes sense to go for it. Touring could have also been the choice but it has a huge expense surge which might not be economic for many.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

There are basically two powertrain setups but one is the standard one while the other comes in the Premium and Touring only. The 2.5 L H-4 is capable of kicking in the power of up to 170 hp at 5800 RPMs and torque of as much as 174 lb-ft at 4100. This gets to 250 hp @ 5600 rpm and 258 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm respectively when the Turbo 2.0L I-4 is subjected to throttling. The former can be coupled with either the 6-Speed Manual or CVT while the latter combines with the CVT only. All the trims come in standard AWD trim which ensures maximum traction.

Since it is observable that the top speed of these SUVs is not available, therefore it might be difficult to gauge their racing abilities on the straight. But the acceleration prowess can be very much concluded as the CR-V outclasses all with its 7.9 seconds for the 0-60 mph mark and 16.2 seconds for a quarter-mile. In response to that, the Forester also offers a decent pick-up altogether which measures to be 8.1 seconds for the 0-60 mph reading and 17.2 for covering the same quarter-mile.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The fuel economy is what completes the utilitarianism of the SUVs and in that respect, the Forester has an average figure in comparison to the segment leaders. 24 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highways, and 27 mpg overall are the numbers that you will be getting while flooring it. The largest fuel tank capacity gives it an edge over the range perspective as it outshines others with its generous return of 448 miles. This is on average 20 miles more than the closest one. The refueling, therefore, is left behind the scope.

After Subaru comes the Honda CR-V with a range of 428 miles but mind you, it is a more fuel-efficient SUV that can be a real asset keeping in mind the minimum 5 years of running operation. It is then followed by the Nissan Rogue and Escape respectively. To be honest, Escape has to really improve itself for the upcoming mode as the 4 mpg widened gap may hurt the pocket for most of the general mass. All in all, the most practical among has to be CR-V only as it has equivalently nice performance as well.

Interior
9.0/10

The charm under the hood is not sufficient unless the appeal within the cabin is satisfactory. Well, it has that ironic duo of the Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning with the Power-Heated Seatings. Thus, ventilation is thoroughly covered inside it. After the temperature control, the leather upholstery can be smelt all around which lays on the steering wheels, gear-shifter, door inserts, and the seats as well. The Interior is also quite attractive with its in-built tech ends which include the top-notch high bass sound system and interactive display.

The Forester is on a safer riverbank side. It is spacious enough to have a proper seating room along with nice visibility. It shares the pleasing status with the Nissan Rogue. Moreover, it has one of the best cargo volumes which ranges up to 68.5 cubic feet. The same is not true to the same level in its rear row but it is manageable. Even others like CR-V and Escape are impressive in their space flexibility. Some of the features are:

  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Leather Upholstery
  • Power-Heated Seatings
  • Rear 60-40 Folding Setback Seats

How intuitive is the 2015 Subaru Forester’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Subaru Forester is not something we can call exemplary in any sense but it continues to impress us with its upgrade in Audio unit from 6-Speaker to the Harman-Kardon Sound System in the higher trim. It does get AM/FM Stereo, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone Connectivity, and Speed Compensated Volume Control as a standard. The Radio Broadcast Data System and Bluetooth audio streaming connectivity will keep your favorite artists’ songs on loop till you get over it. The other normals that have been bestowed in it are the standard USB and Audio Jacks. Some of the features are:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone Connectivity
  • Radio Broadcast Data System
  • Speed Compensated Volume Control
  • Harman-Kardon Sound System

Exterior
8.0/10

The SUVs by their innate nature seem bossy, just a little make-up might give them a mighty presence worthy of all praises. But the same can’t be true for the 2015 Subaru Forester as the silhouette is as common as it can be in curvature with modest-looking headlamps, unlike the Nissan Rogue. It does rest on the attractive 18" Machined-Accented Alloy Wheels and has a lip spoiler in the rear which while cornering may give it a nice side view but that is that only. For functionality, it has Roof Rack Rails and a combination of steel and aluminum panels all around. The chrome-accented grille on the front does a little to improve the overall image.

The outer dimensions of all the rivals are within the standard boundary limit. There is almost no little gap in the measurement. On the bright side of the Subaru Forester is its weight which makes it the lightest in the segment by at least 200 pounds. This much gaping, in case of sudden braking, matters a lot. The ground clearance of 8.7 is also satisfactory and is justified keeping the completely loaded scenario in consideration. Others are also decent in their offering and can be given preference. Some of the features are:

  • Chrome Grille
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Roof Rack Rails
  • Galvanized Steel/Aluminum Panels
  • 18" Machined-Accented Alloy Wheels

Safety
9.0/10

The 2015 Subaru Forester is generous in its safety assurance. It has 5-star rating overall and in almost all parameters barring the rollover integrity in the NHTSA crash test. Not just that, it has been awarded the “ Top Safety Pick+” award which belongs to only a few every year. Therefore, be at your relaxation when reading inside the Forester. The standard features like the 4-Wheel ABS, Traction Control, and Electronic Stability do come as well to support the other passive units. Apart from these, even the suspension is quite adaptive in nature which keeps the wheel on the ground and maintains the ride height. Some of the features:

  • Traction Control
  • Airbags
  • ABS
  • Adaptive Suspension
  • Electronic Stability Control

Final Verdict

Among all the rivals, the Subaru Forester does weigh as a respective option. It is in the middle of all needs for a common man/woman. Soothing and comfortable ergonomics along with a decent performance curve, are the general stuff for your daily commuting which you can achieve with it. Therefore, it can be rated on the same column as others but keep yourself far away from the Base no matter what.

2015 subaru forester turbo touring model

Pros - ["Loads of room", "Turbo engine so get and go", "Low maintenance and great mpg for an suv"]

Cons - ["Navigation system", "Too small backup camera", "None other"]

For an SUV it gets great gas mileage at 32 highway and 28 city. Since it is a turbo i have no fear of merging into traffic. I bought this new in 2015 and refuse to give it up...it has all safery features and is simply one of the most comfortable rides.
