The 2015 Nissan Versa is all about being affordable and functional. Priced at about $11,990 for the base trim, the Versa is the cheapest Nissan car you can get in the US market. For a cheap price tag, it naturally comes with many compromises as well as trade-offs. However, it still has a lot going for it in terms of fuel efficiency and practicality. Available in a total of six trims, the 2015 model year does not offer any major updates. The sedan now comes with slightly refreshed styling and Bluetooth connectivity is now offered as standard.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Versa is powered by the same old 109-horsepower four-cylinder engine that is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). There is no denying the fact that the car might feel a bit underpowered, however, it is still quite a capable everyday driver’s car. All trims come with a six-speed manual transmission, as standard, and all trims use a 109 hp 1.6L inline-4 engine. In terms of the standard features, the Versa does not offer much as the base S trim feels quite spartan. However, functional features such as the auxiliary audio input jack, Bluetooth, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls are offered as standard. More advanced features such as keyless entry, push-button start, a hands-free text messaging assistant, and an audio system with a 5-inch display are offered only by the range-topping SL trim.

The Nissan Versa comes with the same old 1.6 L four-cylinder engine that generates 109 horsepower and 107 ft-lbs of torque. It is paired to a five-speed manual transmission as standard and a four-speed automatic transmission is offered as an optional upgrade with the base trim. All the other trims come with continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). 

The Versa provides acceptable power to crawl around the city as well as occasional cruising over the highway. However, it feels underpowered under full load, and overtaking traffic over the highway is not a breezy affair. The CVT gearbox feels clunky and the engine gets very noisy at high RPMs. Thus, the Versa is capable of reaching from zero to 60 mph in a rather lousy 10 seconds.

While the Versa is the slowest of the lot, it offers the maximum top speed of 119 miles. While all the other compact sedans in this comparison perform similarly, it is the Chevrolet Sonic which is the quickest to reach 60 mph from a standstill. Versa’s lowest torque output means that you have to keep changing gears at slow speeds if you opt for the manual transmission.

Being a light car and a zippy car has its advantages. While the Versa might not be zippy, it certainly is quite fuel-efficient. With its pocket-friendly nature, it becomes an apt car to take on the city traffic on a daily basis. It offers 27 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highway, and 30 mpg combined mileage. Thus, there would be no complaints in terms of fuel efficiency, thanks to its light curb weight and a small engine.

In comparison, the Ford Fiesta Sedan manages to squeeze out just a little bit more in terms of fuel efficiency. The Versa is not the most fuel-efficient sedan here but it is certainly not far behind the Fiesta. However, in terms of range, the Versa lags behind all its competitors due to its small 10.8 gallons of fuel tank capacity.

The Nissan Versa’s cabin can seat up to five people on board but it is best for seating only up to four people. The cheap price tag certainly comes with a lot of trade-offs in terms of interior. Getting inside the cabin is easy due to the wide-opening doors but once you are inside, you will instantly realize that it is built to a budget. Where the interior of the Versa impresses the most is in terms of space. At the front as well as at the rear, the passengers get a lot of stretches out. The dashboard looks boring and the cabin is full of hard plastics.

The front seats offer adequate support for the lower back but the under-thigh, as well as shoulder support, is lacking. The same is the case with the rear seats as well which are not suitable for undertaking long haul trips. The cabin of the Versa is meant for short city trips and the soft cushioning just makes the matter worse for using it for a long-distance journey. The overall visibility is impressive and you get adequate storage space to store your knick-knacks.

The long profile from the side and the chrome surround around the door handles look stylish. At the rear, the swept-back taillamps with a boot spoiler give a bit of a sporty touch to the overall design.

However, its poor safety ratings, bland interior, and poor performance will always keep reminding you of the price you paid for owning an affordable compact Japanese sedan.

              The pros and cons of a 2014 Nissan Versa Note

              Pros - ["$30 bucks fills it up and last for about a week, very economical.", "Like a compact SUV but with a hatchback and plenty of room for your stuff", "Surprisingly Spacious, with plenty of leg, storage and head room."]

              Cons - ["Hard to check the transmission fluid because it's located at the bottom of the engine.", "Loses power when the A/C's on, probably because of the heat wave we've been having.", "Bluetooth phone connects but no bluetooth music, navigation and or internet setup."]

              Although it's an older vehicle and has a lot of miles on it and also has had a transmission replaced, it's still a good little hatchback with plenty of storage room, (seats 5), leg room and head space and it only takes $30 to fill the tank that last for about a week until your next fill up, it's a good economical and hard working vehicle.
