... Juke, Rogue, and Murano because they all have the same failing CVT transmission. CVT started slipping at 40,000 miles. We were on the Highway with a speed limit of 65 and we couldn't get the car above 50 before the gas pedal was useless. The RPM would jump from 1500 to 3000 back to 1500 and we lost acceleration and could only coast at a slower speed. IfRead More

... the shift lock has never been touched. To my surprise i have been stuck in my driveway, gas station and other places. I sat in a parking space for over and hour trying to find a solution which i did. By removing the small panel and sticking my tire pressure stick inside and pushing it down and it releases the shift lock.Read More

You need to know that a Nissan has the worst transmission "on" the road today!! The dealer will not fix it and FORGET about Nissan even owning up to the problem they created. I have had my Nissan for 1 year and 6 months ago my transmission started going out,the dealer said, bring it in and we willRead More

The Nissan Versa arrived on the American shores in 2012 and quickly became a preferable and affordable option in its class. Since the sedan is a new one from the brand, it gets some minor changes for the current model year. Nissan’s efforts are noticed in the reliability of the Versa since the complaints and recalls have come down significantly to 154 and 1 for the current model. The current model has seen complaints regarding various aspects such as airbags, suspension, powertrain, and electrical system among others. The 2014 model year also saw complaints regarding similar areas to the current model but the numbers are more in case of powertrain and safety issues. The single recall for the current model isn’t relevant to a majority of the complaints against it but there is an open investigation for an airbag inflator rupture issue.

"HOWSTUFFINMYCARWORKS" brings you the necessary content on the automotive industry. Even "HOWSTUFFINMYCARWORKS" has noticed defective ignition lock cylinder and defective front suspension strut just as we do. To know more, click on the video below:

Nissan Versa user complaints and problems

Engine problems

  • Burning smell from engine and engine overheating: These couple of issues affected some models of the 2015 Nissan Versa sedan. One owner says in his report that while driving, the engine overheats, and a burning smell emits as well. Despite the occurrences, there would be no warning signs on the instrument cluster. Another owner also mentions engine overheating without any reason while driving. Upon further inspections at the dealerships, the issues could not be duplicated.
  • Jerking and hesitant acceleration: Some owners complain about jerking and hesitant acceleration in their vehicles. These issues are present due to faulty transmissions.
  • Sudden engine stall: Among other issues, some owners have faced sudden engine stalls while driving. One owner mentions in his complaint that after releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle stalled. The incident occurred multiple times and he suspected a transmission problem behind the failure.
  • Transmission failure: Transmission failures have affected models with the CVT as well as manual transmissions. For manual transmission Versas, the problem is that the transmission slips while driving and results in an engine stall sometimes. For CVT-equipped Versas, the transmission fails to engage properly, making the engine unable to accelerate beyond a specific speed.
  • Delayed throttle reaction: A single complaint mentioning this issue is present. The owner says in the report that in his manual transmission-equipped Versa, the delayed throttle response frequently occurs while starting off from first gear. This issue also results in frequent engine stalls as well.

Electrical problems

  • Ignition switch failure: One owner complains that he faces ignition switch failure while turning off the vehicle. Due to the failure, the key fails to come out from the ignition slot and the electricals keep on running. This poses a safety issue with kids onboard.
  • Electrical system glitch: One owner complains that due to a safety glitch, his Versa shut down completely while driving. The dealership informed him about this issue after a further inspection and also informed him that there is no fix for the problem.

Safety problems

  • Airbag and seatbelt failure: Several owners complain about airbag and seatbelt failures in their Versa sedans. While involved in crashes the airbags of the affected vehicles failed to deploy and in some cases, the seatbelts also failed to restrain the occupants as well as the driver, resulting in injuries.
  • Braking system failure: Several owners complain about braking system issues in their vehicles. In most cases, the braking system would lose pressure resulting in decreased braking force and the pedal going to the floor. Some owners say that while slowing down, the braking force would be significantly low, and pumping the brake pedal hard would stop the vehicle.

Miscellaneous problems

  • Obstruction while operating pedals: Some users have faced issues with a certain black box present in between the brake and accelerator pedals in their vehicles. The complaints say that while driving, the drivers’ feet would get stuck on the accelerator pedal or the brake pedal.

Lower Trim Panel may Impede Pedal Operation

A delay in the application of the brake pedal would lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will modify the console trim panel, free of charge. The recall began on September 14, 2015.

Should you buy a used Nissan Versa?

The Nissan Versa is a steady seller from the brand and it does rely on its strengths such as a cavernous truck, spacious cabin, impressive fuel economy, and comfortable ride quality. After its launch, the sedan did face several problems regarding its powertrain and safety systems. With the current model, things have improved significantly but going for a used model of the Versa might need some considerations. A thorough inspection of the used example is required, especially for the engine stalling problems and the braking system problems.
