Overview

Like every other car in Mitsubishi’s lineup getting a slight makeover, the Eclipse Cross also comes with some significant styling changes for the 2022 model year. The 2022 Eclipse Cross comes with four trims in total namely the ES, LE, SE, and SEL just like its previous model year. The Eclipse Cross starts at $23,395 for the ES 2WD trim. The SEL happens to be the costliest trim priced at $27,395.

Buying Advice

We would go for the SE trim level as it is priced accurately and offers features that are available premium to the base models. The Se trim gets a Panoramic sunroof package along with advanced safety features like lane change assist, Blind spot monitor, and Rear cross-traffic alert.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

2022 MY however features the same engine as before, so there are no alterations in the engine despite the change in looks. Another notable change for the 2022 MY is the newly updated suspension. Gone are the springs and shocks, the cars now come equipped with larger shafts and updated suspension calibrations. The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ranks astounding second in the SUV segment with competitors like Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.

Features

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is available in four trim levels with both 2 wheel drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The base ES trim comes at an MSRP of $23,395, while the range-topping SEL trim comes at $27,395 (2WD), and $28,995 (AWD). For $1,600, Mitsubishi has allowed adding the motorsport-derived Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) AWD system to any trim. This includes heated side mirrors as well.

A Welcome package adds features such as carpeted floor mats, a cargo mat, and a paint pen. Adding $1000 cost to the SE's MSRP brings a Panoramic Sunroof package. The best of all SEL’s Touring Package priced at a premium of $2,100, brings upgraded audio, a power panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision mitigation with high-speed braking, roof rails, and a head-up display.

We Recommend

We would go for the SE trim level as it is priced accurately and offers features that are available premium to the base models. The Se trim gets a Panoramic sunroof package along with advanced safety features like lane change assist, Blind spot monitor, and Rear cross-traffic alert.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The 2022 Eclipse Cross comes with the same engine as the 2020 model, so the mileage part will stay the same. The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross returns 26 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highways, and a combined mileage of 27 MPG. The efficiency is on the lesser side considering the low power of the engine. However, it comes with a large fuel tank with a capacity of 16.6 gallons. It translates into a better range with 481 miles on a full tank before a refill stop.

The Honda CR-V has the fuel economy figures in the above competition. It also has an admirable range but falls short in fuel tank capacity compared to the others. With near segment-leading fuel economy and a large fuel tank, Subaru Forester takes the crown home in this section.

Interior
8.6/10

The 2022 Eclipse Cross’s cabin is roomy and comfortable. The car can accommodate five people. For the 2022-year model, the company has introduced light gray leather seat upholstery which now comes standard compared to the black leather seating in the previous model. You do have an option of choosing the black leather upholstery too. The dashboard has been redesigned, and the number of control buttons has been reduced.

The gray seating looks alluring with the color-matched interior materials, which give a luxurious look to the cabin. The head and legroom provided in the cabin are satisfactory and the seats feel comfortable and supportive. Also, the front and rear seats come with heating functions. To add more to the interior, the infotainment system now looks futuristic and offers a 8-inch High-Resolution Touch Display.

  • Leather-trimmed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel
  • Heated Front and Rear Seats
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Redesigned Instrument Cluster
  • Power Panoramic Sunroof

2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2022 Eclipse Cross comes equipped with an 8-Inch High-Res Touch LCD with manual volume and tone control knobs. The LCD shows information about the multimedia, car control, park camera footage, and system controls.

The infotainment system also comes with SiriusXM satellite radio with a 3-month subscription. The infotainment system is loaded with TomTom navigation along with 3D map views and points of interest. It also supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay. The car comes equipped with a 510W Power Sound system for your audio needs.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8-Inch Multi-Information High-res touch LCD
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 3-month Subscription
  • Multi-View Camera System (MVCS)
  • 510W Mitsubishi Power Sound System

Exterior
8.6/10

Mitsubishi decided to skip the 2021 Eclipse Cross. The reason is still unknown. However, after a one-year hiatus, the company decided to relaunch it for the year 2022. The 2022 model comes with significant changes that are eye-catching. The most significant improvement is made to the way it looks. The car’s physiognomy has changed; it now looks more futuristic and progressive.

The front fascia now has an upper LED strip while the headlamps and fog lights are stacked low. The old chrome grille is now replaced by the newly designed grille with black accents. Honestly, it does give a nice appeal to the car. The wheelbase has been increased. So as a consequence the rear dimensions have increased, which also led to the addition in cargo capacity. The rear taillights have been updated to look more intriguing.

The 2022 Eclipse Cross weighs the least in the competition. It also has good ground clearance and a large wheelbase. However, the Subaru Forester takes the crown here for that big and brawny exterior. CR-V on the other hand is a bit wider than the rest which translates into better shoulder room.

Standout Exterior features:

  • Retuned suspension
  • New grille design
  • Rear Spoiler (optional)

Safety
9.1/10

The NHTSA is yet to crash-test the 2022 model. However, the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was awarded five stars in the overall front crash test. The IIHS has also rated the 2020 model as good in front overlap crash, side crash, roof strength, head restraints, and seat test.

Some of the notable safety features of the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross include:

  • Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blindspot monitor with lane change assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warnings

Final Verdict

The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross comes with a new look and more interior options and a new dashboard design. However, there are downsides to the car. If you consider the competition, you’ll readily find better options. The engine in the 2022 Eclipse Cross is not only underpowered but is also less fuel-efficient. Even with more and better interior options, it feels not only cheap but old and ordinary. The Eclipse Cross has a bad reputation in handling, the suspension has been replaced by a newly engineered one, but is that enough for an assured comfort? Additionally, the car has low cargo capacity compared to its competitors. Concerned? Well, you can take a look at the Honda CR-V. You may give a thought to spending $1500 more and consider a CR-V instead.
