Overview

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque features a compelling balance between sportiness and luxury. With tight proportions and compact sizing, the Evoque stands as the perfect Land Rover for urban commutes. However, the compactness doesn’t hinder the comfort and luxury on offer with the Evoque’s cabin.

Buying Advice

There’s a good deal of variety when it comes to the 2016 Range Rover Evoque. If you’re considering taking one home, we suggest going for the SE Premium trim. We feel that the SE Premium offers an extremely good balance of price and features. For $45,800, the SE Premium gets you an exquisite leather-wrapped cabin, along with 12-way power adjustable seats. There’s also a good deal of tech features on offer, which makes this trim a compelling deal.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque is offered with a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 engine, which is capable of making 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The Evoque’s engine comes mated to a clever 9-Speed Automatic gearbox, which does a fantastic job of shuffling power though the powertrain. Additionally, the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque is offered in AWD, which makes driving it easy.

While the engine itself doesn’t feel particularly powerful, there’s plenty of grunt for powerful highway cruising and comfortable overtaking. Driving in the city feels like a breeze, and the AWD system makes handling comfortable. The 2016 Range Rover Evoque sprints from 0 to 60 MPH in 7.1 seconds, which is sufficiently quick for a vehicle of its size. Additionally, the 2016 model year Evoque also manages to hit top speeds of up to 135 miles per hour, which makes it a great choice for highway crunching.

Comparing the competition, the 2016 Range Rover Evoque comes out as the clear winner in terms of raw horsepower figure. Both the BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 offer more torque than the Evoque, albeit by a small margin. Despite lower power, the 2016 model year BMW X1 showcases the best 0 to 60 launch time, while the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 follows closely. Quarter-mile times of all three cars stand fairly close, with the Range Rover Evoque being the quickest in this front. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 offers the highest top speed among the competition, going as fast as 145 MPH.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque exhibits pretty decent performance merit, but lags behind in the fuel efficiency department. The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque only manages to return 21 MPG in the city, and 29 MPG on highways. The result is a combined MPG rating of 24, which is lower than what is being offered with the competition. However, to compensate for the low fuel economy, the Evoque comes with a large 18.5-gallon fuel tank, which helps in delivering respectable driving range.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque offers an extremely classy and well-appointed cabin. There’s a generous use of leather, especially on the higher trims. You get 12-way power adjustable seats as standard, while you also have the option for upgrading to 14-way power seats, with memory function, ventilation, and premium leather finish.

You also have the option of customizing the Evoque cabin to a great extent, all the way from choosing the color of your seats and dash, to picking the finish of your dash. The 2016 Range Rover offers a fair bit of space inside the cabin, with up to 5 passengers being comfortably seated. There’s dual-zone climate control on offer, along with additional features such as a panoramic moonroof, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

At the back, the BMW X1 remains the roomiest, with the Evoque following closely behind. In terms of cabin room, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA falls on the disappointing side, offering significantly lower passenger space than both of its competitors. Some key interior features offered with the 2016 Range Rover Evoque include:

  • Dual-Zone Climate Control.
  • Leather Upholstery.
  • 12-way/14-way Power Seats.

The Evoque features intricately designed front and rear lights, which flaunt sophisticated LED matrices.

The side profile of the Evoque is very unique, and genuinely no other vehicle in this segment matches the elegance and artsy aesthetic of the Evoque till date. Land Rover offers 18-inch alloys with the Evoque, which can be upgraded to 19-inch wheels with fancy finishes depending on your taste.

Safety
8.0/10

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque is a safe vehicle for daily commutes. The Evoque is based on an entirely new platform employed by Land Rover, which is rigid and ensures high structural integrity. This means that the Evoque can take impacts without deforming or transferring shocks to the occupants. Additionally, the 2016 Range Rover Evoque comes with a wide range of active and passive safety features, which make the compact SUV extremely safe for frequent use. Some key safety features offered with the 2016 Range Rover Evoque include:

  • ESP and ABS.
  • Traction Control.
  • Hill Descent Control.
  • Dual-Stage Airbags.
  • Hill Start Assist.
  • Side Curtain Airbags.
  • Lane Keeping Assist.
  • LED Headlights with DRLs.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Monitor.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Range Rover Evoque stands as a classier alternative to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the BMW X1. While the Evoque promises great ride quality, cabin comfort and isolation, it misses out on performance, practicality and reliability. Additionally, the higher starting price of the 2016 model year Evoque can actually make it a difficult sell. However, if you’re not concerned about the practicality or the higher price, the 2016 Range Rover should be an excellent choice.

              Love it

Pros - Very comfortable, good visibility, great on rough roads, great in bad weather including snow; loads of good spec

Cons - Elec doors a bit eccentric when opening with key in pocket

Love it. But expensive to run - servicing and insurance costs high
