Overview

The Jeep Compass resides in a highly competitive segment and stands out with its higher offroad capabilities. The 2015 model comes with very slight changes and some shuffling to the feature set. But overall it is a carryover model. However, it hasn’t ever been the best choice in the segment and rivals have always offered a better feature set. But the Jeep Compass has always had a ruggedness that attracted buyers.

Buying Advice

The Latitude trim in a 4WD configuration equipped with the stronger 2.4 L engine would be the ideal choice. The Latitude trim comes with some premium elements and added features compared to the base Sport trim while being lower priced than the Limited. All of this makes this mid-level trim the best option. But choosing 4WD is compulsory, not just for the added capabilities, but also to get the stronger engine.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes with two engine and transmission options to choose from. All models come in an FWD configuration as standard and 4WD is optional. Pricing for the Compass starts at $18,995 while the highest-end model costs $28,795. The 2015 Jeep Compass competes with the Hyundai Tucson, the Ford Escape, and the Nissan Rogue

Features
9.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes in three main trim lines which are Sport Latitude and Limited. The Sport and Latitude trims in the FWD configuration come with a 2.0 L Inline-4 engine under the hood while the Limited trim and 4WD models of the lower trims come with a slightly stronger 2.4L four-cylinder engine. The following table shows the detailed list of features and pricing of the 2015 Jeep Compass-

We Recommend

The Latitude trim in a 4WD configuration equipped with the stronger 2.4 L engine would be the ideal choice. The Latitude trim comes with some premium elements and added features compared to the base Sport trim while being lower priced than the Limited. All of this makes this mid-level trim the best option. But choosing 4WD is compulsory, not just for the added capabilities, but also to get the stronger engine.

Engine and Performance
6.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes with two engine options. The Sport and Latitude trims in an FWD configuration comes with a 2.0 L Inline-4 engine putting out 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission in the Sport, and a 6-speed automatic in the Latitude trim. However, the Altitude and High Altitude sub-trims come with the same engine coupled with a CVT transmission.

The Limited trim as standard and all other models with 4WD is equipped with a stronger 2.4 L Inline-4 that outputs 172 hp and 165 lb-ft. This engine is optional with the Sport and Latitude trims equipped with an FWD drivetrain. The base engine lacks power and is noisy and unrefined. The stronger the 2.4 L engine is, however, the better performer offering a more refined experience and smoother power output. The base engine takes 9.2 seconds to attain a speed of 60mph and 6.9 seconds to cross a quarter of a mile.

As we can see, the base engine of the Compass compared to the competition in the price range is super disappointing and it is advised to stay away from it. The Hyundai Tucson is the most powerful and fastest option and comes with impressive power output. The Nissan Rogue and the Ford Escape are in mid-ground when it comes to power output. However, the Compass is faster than the Rogue even while being underpowered.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes with a not-very-exciting fuel economy even with the weak, underpowered base engine under the hood. The Compass delivers a fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city, 27 on the highway, and a combined output of 24 mpg. Along with a lower capacity of 13.6-gallon fuel capacity, the Compass managed to deliver a combined range of around 326 miles. This is a disappointing distance and every other machine in the segment offers a better range.

The 2015 Nissan Rogue smokes all of the competition by delivering combined fuel efficiency of 28 mpg. The Nissan also provides the most range followed by the Ford Escape. The Tucson and the Compass come with a similar fuel economy. However, the Tucson being much more powerful and faster while also having a larger fuel capacity and providing more range justifies its lower efficiency whereas the Compass is the loser.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass features a quality interior with some minor updates made to it for this model year. The seats come covered in cloth of Light Pebble Beige or Dark Slate Gray with matching accent stitching as standard in the lower Sport trim which gets upgraded to Premium Sports Mesh Cloth/McKinley vinyl-trimmed seats in the Latitude trim. The top-end Limited trim features McKinley premium perforated leather-trimmed seats which look and feel more luxurious.

The neatly designed cabin and the dashboard look and feel pretty good. The seats are comfortable and can seat adults in both rows comfortably. The interior of the cabin is spacious and the overall vibe of the interior is good. The lower Sport and the mid-level Latitude trims come with manual air conditioning whereas the Limited trim gets automatic temperature control as standard. The Compass has a cargo capacity measuring 22.7 cu-ft which is on the lower side of the spectrum.

The Ford Escape comes with the best-looking interior while having a cramped second row that lacks legroom. The Ford, however, has the most cargo capacity followed by the Nissan Rogue. The Hyundai Tucson has the overall most spacious cabin offering the best and second-row space while the Escape is more spacious in the front row. The Compass has a quality cabin with enough space on the inside. The following are its prominent interior features-

  • Heated perforated leather-trimmed front bucket seats
  • Power 6-way adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with speed and audio controls
  • Rear 60/40 split-folding, reclining seats
  • Premium Sport Mesh Cloth/McKinley Vinyl-trimmed seats
  • Heated front seats

How intuitive is the 2015 Jeep Compass’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Jeep Compass comes with a Uconnect infotainment unit with a 6.5-inch touchscreen unit. The base model features a 4-speaker sound system while the top-end models get a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics sound system. The touchscreen interface is not very intuitive or easy to use. There is much better and updated tech inside the competitors. The following are the prominent infotainment features-

  • Uconnect 430 radio with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 1-year subscription
  • Bluetooth Streaming Audio.
  • Voice Command

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass has a decent-looking exterior and comes with minor updates for this year. The Compass also happens to be a more offroad-oriented machine offering a higher ground clearance comparing with the rivals in the segment. The Compass is a boxy and typical Jeep crossover which is not the most beautiful one, while also is not a letdown in terms of exterior beauty.

It has a distinctive style and a design that is classy and neat, unlike some aggressively designed rivals. The wheels of the Compass are of 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels in the base and mid-level trims while the top-end Limited trim gets larger 18-inch ones. The Compass is a simple-looking machine with traits of ruggedness and the Jeep legacy scattered all around it. Overall the 2015 Jeep Compass is a good option based on exterior beauty.

The Ford Escape and the Jeep Compass are the best-looking machines among these whereas the Tucson looks the weirdest and outdated. The Ford Escape happens to be the heaviest while the Nissan is the longest. The Jeep Compass has the highest ground clearance followed by the Ford Escape. The following are the most important exterior features of the 2015 Jeep Compass-

  • Body-color, power-heated, manual-folding mirrors
  • Premium fog lamps with chrome bezels
  • 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels with Mineral Gray pockets
  • Bifunctional halogen projector headlamps
  • Bright roof side rails, grille, exhaust tip, and rear fascia
  • Acoustic glass windshield

Safety
7.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Compass is equipped with a set of advanced safety features. NHTSA as well as IIHS has not rated the Compass under all the parameters. However, for overall safety, it gets a 3-star rating. For side safety, it has not been rated, and for rollover safety, it gets a 4-star rating. IIHS has rated it for side safety and it gets a ‘Good’ rating. All of this makes the Compass moderately safe vehicle. The following are some of the most important safety features-

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM)
  • Speed control
  • ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera
  • Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System

Final Verdict

The Jeep Compass is not the best option in the segment. It comes with an underpowered base engine and a moderately powerful optional engine. The fuel efficiency is also not the best and it doesn’t come with the best interior. The interior of the cabin is of good quality, but certainly not the best. The exterior is good-looking and has a decent-looking design language. Overall, the Jeep Compass is not the ideal choice in the segment, which would be the Hyundai Tucson and the Ford Escape.

              My favorite Jeep's

Pros - ["4wheel drive", "Because it is a jeep"]

Cons - ["No volume on the steering wheel for the radio", "Doesn't tell me how many miles I have left on my tank of gas"]

I am definitely a Jeep girl from the old square body style to today'ss style. Of today's style I like the grand Cherokee best. Of all the Cherokee's i like the square one best. But I also love the CJ 5 and CJ 7. Guess you could say I'm just a Jeep girl
