Overview

With the rise of the subcompact SUV segment at a steady pace, Jeep wanted to make its presence felt there and brought along the Renegade. The SUV saw the light of the day for the current model year and carries a strong character aligned with a quirky design. The SUV is built on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform which it shares with some Fiat cars.

Buying Advice

We would suggest the Latitude trim with the 4WD layout for the best experience at an affordable price. For off-roading lovers, the Trailhawk trim is highly recommended.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The SUV comes with two powertrain and two drivetrain options. In the segment, it offers an unmatched off-roading prowess with its 4WD layout, staying true to the long and rich heritage of the Jeep brand. The price for the Renegade starts at $17,995 and is offered in four trim levels.

Features
8.0/10

The Jeep Renegade falls under the affordable price bracket hence carries a starting MSRP of $17,995. The base Sport trim doesn’t offer much but gets the basics right to make the vehicle a practical one. The Sport trim is even offered with a 4WD layout as well. Stepping up to the Latitude sees some convenience features such as power-operated outside mirrors with heating function, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and automatic headlights. The Limited trim offers some premium features such as remote engine start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat among other features. The top-end Trailhawk is an off-road focused trim and gets some off-road specific enhancements such as tow hooks, a lifted suspension, and underbody skid plates.

We Recommend

We would suggest the Latitude trim with the 4WD layout for the best experience at an affordable price. For off-roading lovers, the Trailhawk trim is highly recommended.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The Jeep Renegade engine is a 1.4-liter turbocharged FIRE I-4 motor and it dishes out a decent 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of maximum torque. The motor is mated to a standard 9-speed ZF 948TE automatic transmission. For the 4WD-equipped models, the SUV gets terrain-specific drive modes for optimum gripe levels. The Trailhawk gets an enhanced version of the same transmission in the form of a low-ratio off-road gearing along with an extra drive mode. The motor is smoother and sportier than the bigger 2.4-liter motor but the latter’s low-end torque gives it an added advantage over the base engine. The 9-speed automatic does its job brilliantly and keeps the motor extremely relaxed while cruising out on the highways and the city runs are equally hassle-free with quick shifts.

The Kia Soul is the most underpowered vehicle here and the Jeep Renegade offers a much better package than the former even in its base trim. The Ford Escape is the costliest rival here when compared to the base trim of the Renegade and the Kia Soul but it has the maximum horsepower here and equal torque output to the Renegade.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Renegade gas mileage numbers are set at 24mpg with the city runs, 31mpg out on the highways, and 27mpg of combined mileage. The figures are impressive for the segment and set this Jeep SUV apart from the rest of its siblings in terms of fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, the Renegade has a smaller than average gas tank of 12.7 gallons and struggles to offer long driving range figures, unlike its rivals.

The Kia Soul fails to impress with its similar fuel economy figures to the Renegade since it is significantly underpowered. However, the Soul gets a sizable 14.2 gallons gas tank and delivers some commendable driving range figures. The Ford Escape impresses the most with its fuel economy figures despite being more powerful than the Renegade and the Soul. With a gas tank capacity of 13.6 gallons, the Escape offers the maximum driving range numbers here.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Renegade interior isn’t what you’d call stylish. That being said, the cabin has a practical and functional design along with robust build quality. There are ample storage cubbies throughout the cabin and the 115-volt power outlet in the higher trims just enhances the practicality to a great extent. Apart from the base Sport trim, other trim levels get soft-touch surfaces for both the dashboard and the door panels, making for a luxurious experience at an affordable price tag. The front seats have more than adequate headroom and legroom on offer along with a pair of well-cushioned seats. The higher trim levels also get power-adjustable functions for the front seats as well.

The cargo capacity is modest at 18.5 cu-ft with the rear seats up but it extends to a generous 50.8 cu-ft with the seats folded.

The Kia Soul offers a generous cargo capacity with the seats upright and has a spacious cabin too. But its interior sees some cost-cutting bits but sports a stylish design, however. The Ford Escape has a well-designed cabin too which is a practical and spacious one as well. But both the Escape and the Soul beat the Renegade in terms of rear-seat space.

Some interior features are:

  • Height-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 60/40 Split-folding rear seat
  • Ambient LED lighting
  • Fold-flat function for the front passenger seat

How intuitive is the 2015 Jeep Renegade’s infotainment unit?

The 2015 Jeep Renegade gets a 5-inch touchscreen display with FCA’s Uconnect interface. The base Sport trim doesn’t get an infotainment display though. The user interface is easy to use and smooth with crisp graphics. The system incorporates most of the basic connectivity and entertainment functions as well.

Some infotainment features are:

  • 5.0-inch touchscreen display
  • Uconnect user interface
  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity
  • Six-speaker audio system

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior of the 2015 Jeep Renegade clearly indicates that it is a Jeep vehicle with its distinctive chunky and boxy design language. The front grille gets the traditional design of the brand along with round headlamp units. The front fenders house the turn indicator lamps while the blacked-out front bumper holds the fog lamps. The hood gets a nice sculpted design in the middle while the suede profile remains simple with the Renegade badging on the front doors. The rear end gets a compact design with unique square-shaped tail lights.

The Kia Soul has the most unorthodox design here which looks like a blend of a hatchback and a wagon. It also has the lowest ground clearance as well and is the most compact vehicle here. The Ford Escape gets a minimalistic design and has the maximum dimensions among the rivals here.

Some exterior features include:

  • My Sky Fixed or Removable Roof Panels
  • Full-Size Spare Spare Tire W/Matching Wheel
  • Front sunroof (Limited and Latitude)
  • Black Painted Roof
  • Hood Decal

Safety
7.0/10

The 2015 Jeep Renegade gets a decent safety department with a host of standard and optional safety techs. The IIHS gave the SUV an overall rating of “Good” which translates to a decent safety aspect of the vehicle. Apart from the standard safety features, some optional features include a blind spot monitoring system, a lane departure warning system, lane-keeping assist, and a frontal collision warning system.

Some standard safety techs include:

  • Traction and stability control
  • Driver knee airbag
  • Front side airbags and side curtain airbags
  • Hill-start assist
  • Lane-keeping assist(optional)

Final Verdict

In the segment, the Jeep Renegade tries hard to bring an authentic Jeep flavor with the traditional styling cues, aggressive pricing, and an off-road specific Trailhawk model like its bigger siblings. The SUV gets the basics right but lacks in terms of rear-seat comfort and overall cargo capacity. Performance-wise, it delivers a sporty one especially with its base 1.4-liter motor and can go off the roads easily. Overall, if you’re looking for a fun-to-drive vehicle that is practical and fuel-efficient too, the Jeep Renegade would be a strong option to consider.
