... Well turns out the engine blew. Oh, my Hyundai only has 95k miles on it by the way!!! These engines are absolute garbage. Do research on the class action lawsuit that has forced Hyundai to fix MILLIONS of these engine when they blow due to excessive oil consumption and connective rod bearing failure. My engine is being fixed under recall, but anyone who didn’t get a specific knock sensor recall before the engine blows,Read More

... cars anymore so “if” they approve the warranty claim, then another department can try to help us get a rental covered. We had no indications there was a problem until it was catastrophic and from many claims it seems like Hyundai is well aware of the problem but does everything they can to deny the warranty coverage they brag so much about. Hyundai has really shaken things up in terms of their product line-up, and their SUVs always did really well in the market. The 2018 Hyundai Tucson is a strong contender due to its plush ride, excellent interiors, and wide array of convenience features. Sadly though, it has reported a large number of complaints - nearly 151 and most of them are regarding the engine. The manufacturer has issued one recall due to an unrelated issue and hence has not solved the problem owners have complained about.

The Hyundai Tucson competition consists of the Mazda CX-5, the Honda CR-V, and the Toyota RAV4. The 2018 Tucson reliability rating of 80/100 makes it stand in the middle of the pack which is led by the likes of the Buick Encore. Check out the Youtube video down below by "Howstuffinmycarworks" where they list out all issues and problems faced by the Tucson owners. Read ahead to find out if the Tucson is the go to crossover for your family needs.

2018 Hyundai Tucson User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  1. There have been many reports of the transmission system of the car being faulty. After stopping, the engine revs for a few seconds, and the vehicle will lurch forward. The CVT transmission also has delayed response according to many owners. Sometimes it loses power completely.
  2. Many owners have raised issues with the engine like knock, abnormal popping sounds, loss of motive power, jerking like slowing down, and so on. There are also many cases of connecting rod bearings failing, as well as oil consumption issues. The Hyundai Tucson engine recall has not applied to this model year.
  3. The brake system of this car is another known problem area. The brakes do not engage at full pressure, thus causing a reduction of braking ability. Sometimes, the pedal fails to respond completely and this causes a complete loss of braking.

Electrical system problems:

  1. Multiple owners have had issues in which the electrical system completely shuts down. The engine refuses to crank or restart. This is sometimes followed by check engine light warning, oil and tire pressure warning lights, and so on.
  2. Many owners have also stated issues with Apple CarPlay connectivity. The infotainment system then shuts itself off and none of the features are available during this period.
  3. The wiring system also has a soy-based material coating that attracts rodents. This can mean that rodents can chew and damage the wiring. It is one of the worst Hyundai Tucson common problems to have.
  4. A few owners have had issues with the brake light warning. When this warning flashes, the brake light does not work and hence will cause a safety issue.

Exterior problems:

  1. There are many complaints about the headlights of the car. They fail intermittently in many cases. In many others, owners have reported that it does not light up wide enough to have peripheral vision while driving.
  2. Many owners have complained that the sunroof cracks easily even though there is no apparent impact.

Safety problems:

  1. There have been a few complaints about the airbags not protecting occupants properly in the event of a crash. They have failed to deploy on multiple instances and also show the warning sign for many owners.
  2. The blind-spot monitoring system sometimes takes objects that are not present and is not great to work with.
  3. There was one complaint about the seatbelt failing to retract in the event of a crash. Thus the occupant was not kept safe.

Should you buy the 2018 Hyundai Tucson?

The Hyundai Tucson is a value-for-money SUV that many owners have come to love. However, its engine is very unreliable and shows up multiple problems, several ones being catastrophic like the issue surrounding the Hyundai Tucson fire recall. In this regard, and also considering that there are many capable cars in the category including the Honda CR-V, we do not feel that the Tucson can be recommended.
