Overview

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu comes with many minor changes and belongs to the seventh-generation of the Malibu. However, Chevrolet now offers a six-speed automatic transmission as standard with all the trims and some new wheel designs are offered. With a starting price of $21,975, the Malibu does offer good interior comfort, decent exterior design and reasonable specifications. The LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ trims are powered by a 2.4-liter inline-four engine producing 169 horsepower. A 3.6-liter V6 engine with 252 hp is on offer with the 2LT and LTZ trims.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu ticks many boxes in the four-door midsize sedan segment. With four different trims on offer and two different powertrain options for the top two trims, Chevrolet has made sure to find a balance between price and features. The NHTSA has given a four-star safety rating, while the IIHS has given it a Top Safety Pick award. Certainly, the safety quotient is good. The 2011 Malibu has been recalled four times and about 903 complaints are registered with the NHTSA. If we were to choose then we would pick the 2019 and above model years for better reliability.

The Chevy Malibu 2011 is a decent offering in the midsize sedan segment. It won the 2009 North American Car of the Year award for its worthy credentials. However, in 2011, many more capable rivals like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Mazda 6 are here to challenge the Malibu and take a larger chunk of the pie. Let’s see how the Malibu fares against the competition in our detailed review

2011 Chevrolet Malibu for sale

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu is currently in its seventh-generation and it hasn’t changed much as compared to the 2008 model year. However, the competition is heating up and Chevrolet bets on Malibu’s refined ride quality, good interior space and affordability. With a starting msrp ranging from $21,975 to $27,165, the different trims offer a good list of features if not the best in the segment. You can also opt for a used 2011 Malibu and save quite a bit of money. The sale price of the used car will depend on the mileage, condition, age and number of owners.

Buying Advice

Considering the list of features and pricing, we would like to recommend the 2LT trim. At a starting price of $25,385, the Malibu 2LT trim offers multiple features over the LS and 1LT trims like a set of 17-inch chrome tech aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, bluetooth connectivity, auto-dimming rear view mirror, remote vehicle starter system. Chevrolet also offers the more powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine as optional with this trim. So, certainly the 2LT trim is the best pick.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu remains a popular, well-equipped entry in the hotly contested segment of midsize family sedans- Edmunds

The 2011 Chevy Malibu belongs to the seventh generation that was launched in 2008. Since, Chevrolet has made very subtle changes to the lineup. The Malibu 2011 sedan is not perfect but does offer refined NVH levels and decent safety rating. Chevrolet’s midsize sedan has scored 82 out of 100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating. For quality and reliability it scored 86/100, while for the driving experience it scored 78 out of 100. Even for resale it scores 78 out of 100.

The scores above 80 can be termed as ‘Great’, while below 80 can be considered as ‘Average’. The fuel economy on offer is decent but the competition comes with equal or lower fuel consumption. The bigger V6 engine is good for performance and has a lower gas mileage of 5-6 miles per gallon. The 2011 Malibu’s base trim is more suitable for fleet purposes, courtesy of its affordability and short-feature list.

Features

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu isn't edgy or high-performance, but it has everything that most mid-size sedan shoppers seek- The Car Connection

The 2011 Chevy Malibu is offered in LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ trims. The starting msrp of the four trims are $21,975, $22,975, $25,385 and $27,165 respectively. The base LS trim is suitable for fleet purposes and should be avoided. The LS offers some key features like 17-inch wheels, stability control system with traction control, Onstar directions and connections with turn-by-turn navigation, remote keyless entry, six airbags, acoustic-laminated glass and custom cloth seat power-adjustable outside mirrors in black, and CD/MP3 Player with AM/FM stereo.

The 1LT trim adds 17-inch bright aluminum wheels, steering wheel mounted audio/cruise control, body color power-adjustable outside mirrors, and bright accent front and rear fascia and sill plates. The 2LT trim offers 17-inch chrome tech aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, bluetooth connectivity, auto-dimming rear view mirror, remote vehicle starter system, and UltraLux seating with heated front seats and 6-way driver-adjustable driver’s seat. Fuel Economy
7.0/10

While the four-cylinder Malibu is quite fuel-efficient and green—especially considering its interior space—the V-6 model isn’t as much of a standout- The Car Connection

The 2011 Chevy Malibu offers acceptable gas mileage. The EPA-estimated fuel economy of the 2011 Malibu is 22/33/26 miles per gallon in city/highway/combined driving conditions. The optional 3.6-liter V6 however, is not as fuel-efficient as the four-cylinder engine. It manages to do 17 mpg in the cities, 26 mpg on the highways which gives it a combined fuel economy of 20 mpg. With a gas tank size of 16 gallons, the 2.4-liter and 3.6-liter equipped models offer a combined driving range of 416 miles and 320 miles respectively.

While the Chevy Malibu has a fuel tank capacity of 16.0 gallons, all the other sedans mentioned in the table above have an 18.5-gallon fuel tank. So, a larger gas tank helps them provide a better driving range than the Malibu. The clear winner in the comparision is the Honda Accord. Not only does it have the best fuel efficiency, but it also provides the best overall range. The Toyota Camry is right at its tail while the Mazda6 is only marginally better than the Malibu in this regard. The Chevrolet Malibu offers better gas mileage than the Mazda6 but owing to a smaller gas tank, loses out in the competition.

Interior
9.0/10

The cabin, though simply arrayed, is hit-and-miss- Cars.com

The interior of the 2011 Chevy Malibu is ergonomic and most passengers won’t complain about it. The well-appointed interior features a spacious seating arrangement that is comfortable and even the NVH levels are well-contained on high speeds. However, the materials used for the interior except the dashboard feel cheap and non-durable. The dashboard has a dual-cowl design featuring a two-tone color option. The layout of the dashboard and center console is simple and straightforward. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable and spacious. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the rear seat in terms of support.

Overall, there is ample space in terms of headroom and legroom but the same cannot be said about the shoulder room. The lower LS and 1LT trims offer custom cloth upholstery in Ebony, Titanium and Cocoa/Cashmere colors. Similarly, the 2LT trim offers UltraLux upholstery in Ebony, Titanium and Cashmere colors. The top-tier LTZ trim offers leather upholstery in Ebony, Ebony/Brick Leather, and Cocoa/Cashmere colors. A lighter shade of colors would have helped with a feeling of airiness inside the car.

The trunk space of 15.1 cubic feet is not much and some rivals offer better cargo capacities. However, the same is possible only with the sacrifice of the rear seat leg space. The rear 60/40 split-folding seats can be folded down, adding more usable space to push bigger luggage. Some interior features like single zone manual climate control, sliding armrest and dual storage compartments, rear window defogger, remote keyless entry, and tilt and telescopic steering wheel are standard. Some other features like auto-dimming rear view mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, remote vehicle starter system, heated front seats, sunroof, automatic climate control are offered with the 2LT and LTZ trims.

Not only does the Mazda6 provide the best interior space among the four sedans mentioned above, but also provides the best cargo space. It offers up to 16.6 cubic feet of cargo volume in the trunk. Both the Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Malibu offer similar trunk and cabin space with only difference being in the front and rear seat legroom. The Honda Accord offers the smallest boot but has cabin space on par with the segment standards.

The infotainment system of the Malibu sits deep and low in the center console. It comes with the OnStar interface that is not exactly high-tech but it has a sufficient amount of features. A cluster of buttons and knobs are placed below the screen in a layout that is simple but not particularly user-friendly. The buttons are smaller and are hard to identify while driving. Another disadvantage is that it does not offer onscreen navigation while Bluetooth connectivity is offered only in the 2LT and LTZ trims. This system is paired to a 6-speaker audio system which gets upgraded to an 8-speaker Bose audio system in the top-tier LTZ trim.

Some of the key interior and infotainment features of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu are:

  • Automatic climate control (LTZ)
  • Leather upholstery (LTZ)
  • Heated front seats (LT and LTZ)
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and 6-way power-adjustable passenger’s seat (LTZ)
  • OnStar telematics
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Bluetooth connectivity (2LT and LTZ)
  • CD/MP3 Player
  • 8-speaker Bose audio system (LTZ)

Exterior
8.0/10

Once lauded as bold and unabashedly American, some editors now declared the Malibu’s two-bar grille and squared-off rear stale- Cars.com

The Chevy Malibu is an elegant-looking sedan. Its exterior styling is not exactly sporty or aggressive but it offers a sophisticated design and structure that is attractive. The front fascia comprises handsome-looking automatic halogen headlamps, a two-tier grille with the Chevy bow-tie in the middle, a sleek and slightly sloping hood, and a simple front bumper with fog lights (optional). The rear end is characterized by a flat, tall and upright design. The side profile is comparatively taller, thanks to the tall rear-end profile. A sunroof is optional for every trim except the base LS trim.

Some exterior features like acoustic-laminated and light tinted glass, black grille insert with chrome surround, halogen headlamps with automatic control, and power-adjustable exterior mirrors are standard, while higher trims offer fog lamps, LED tail lamps, silver grille insert with chrome surround, body-color, and heated and powered exterior mirrors. Chevrolet offers different exterior colors like Red Jewel Metallic, Imperial Blue Metallic, Gold Mist Metallic, Taupe Gray Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Mocha Steel Metallic, White Diamond Tricoat, Black Granite Metallic and Summit White.

The Chevy Malibu is the heaviest among the four sedans mentioned above. In terms of exterior dimensions, the Honda Accord outperforms its rivals by small margin. However, the Chevrolet Malibu has the longest wheelbase and also offers decent ground clearance in this comparison. A longer wheelbase helps with better high speed stability. The Mazda6 rides the lowest to the ground while the Honda Accord has the largest exterior dimensions, with the Toyota Camry being the smallest.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2011 Malibu are:

  • Automatic halogen headlamps
  • Fog lights (optional)
  • Sunroof (optional)
  • Body-colored, power-adjustable, manual-folding, heated side-view mirrors
  • LED tail lights
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Rear window shade (LTZ)

Safety
8.0/10

We consider Safesy as another factor, making the Chevy Malibu a good purchase. The NHTSA has revised its criteria and ratings making it tougher to earn a perfect score. However, the Malibu manages to achieve a 4-star overall rating which is impressive. The IIHS awarded it an overall score of “Good” which is the highest possible rating. It scored “Good” in frontal-offset, side-impact, rear impact, roof rollover strength tests respectively. Not only does the Malibu perform well in crash tests, but also provides an array of safety and driver-assist features.

Some of the key safety features of the 2011 Chevy Malibu are:

  • StabiliTrak stability control
  • Brake assist
  • Traction control
  • LATCH system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • OnStar turn-by-turn navigation
  • Automatic crash response

Competition
8.5/10

2011 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2011 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord does not need an introduction, being one of the prominent names in the midsize sedan segment. The Honda Accord offers better gas mileage than the Chevrolet Malibu. The Chevry Malibu offers slightly better performance than the Accord. Even the rear seat legroom and cargo space is better on the Chevy Malibu. However, the Honda Accord is more expenesive than the Chevrolet Malibu

2011 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2011 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry has been one of the most preferred choice owing to its reliability and good resale value. The Toyota Camry offers slightly lower performance than the Chevy Malibu. The fuel economy of both the cars is the same in every driving condition. However, owing to a larger gas tank size, the Toyota Camry offers better driving range. The Toyota Camry offers somewhat better rear seat leg space and nearly the same trunk capacity.

2011 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2011 Mazda6

The Mazda6 is a decent offering in the midsize sedan segment. The Mazda6 offers similar output figures and slightly better performance than the Malibu. The Chevrolet Malibu offers better gas mileage but the Mazda6 offers better driving range owing to larger gas tank size. The Mazda6 can be considered as more practical with better cargo capacity and rear seat legroom as compared to the Chevy Malibu.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu provides practicality with subtle performance and comfort. It is best suited for those who seek a car for daily driving. It offers some decent features which make it value-for-money too. It performs well in almost every category with few complaints. The Malibu especially performs well in fuel economy, safety, and interior comfort. It's a well-equipped all-rounder that should definitely be on your test-drive list. Before making a buying decision, do consider other sedans like Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

              The car is decent

Pros - ["It's a Chevrolet", "The ac blows like snow cold"]

Cons - ["It can only take the Texas weather", "It's clear with no tint and it makes it really hot"]

2012 Chevrolet Malibu is a great car to drive it's smooth when you take off but once you get a lot of miles on the car. It's time for an upgrade and the rims you will have to replace after a certain amount of time of having the car. Other than that generally the car is a great car to have as long as you have money to keep up with the maintenance it'll need after so many years.
