Overview

After the launch just last year, the 2020 BMW X7 now gets the M-treatment with the arrival of the new BMW X7 M50i. With that, the X7 xDrive50i no longer gets the M-Sport package. Apart from minor feature shuffling, the BMW X7 remains majorly unchanged from last year. Even the base engine is brawny and peppy enough to sprint from 0-06 MPH in 5.8 seconds while towing capacity is rated at 5,400 lbs.

2020 BMW X7 Buying Advice

Since the BMW X7 has been unchanged since its launch year, one could buy a used X7 and save some money off the depreciation. Also, BMW has also brought in the X7 M50i this year, so performance enthusiasts could shell out some more money and get hold of the M-Power engine with the practicality and luxury of the X7.

The cabin of the 2020 X7 is spacious, luxurious, and modern-looking. It packs all the latest comfort and tech features and is practical as well. In terms of safety, the X7 packs the best safety tech in the segment and is a reliable vehicle as well. The bigger updated geometry of the BMW competes with the equally big Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, the brawny Audi Q7, and the quintessential luxury off-roader Land Rover Discovery.

2020 BMW X7 for sale

Now in its second sale year, the 2020 BMW X7 is available for sale and has a starting price of $74,895. Lease deals for BMW X7 start at $1,259/month for a 36-month duration and 7,500 miles of annual mileage with $2,567 due at the time of signing. The 2020 X7 finance offers begin at $1,170 for a period of 84 months at 4.8% APR and a $8,299 down payment.

Buying Advice

Provided that the X7 comes with a V8 without the M-badge, does get us exciting but then again when it comes down to price, the 40i makes more sense. We suggest you buy the $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional Package and $800 Parking Assistance Package as it adds essential driver-assist systems.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The BMW X7 is the company's biggest SUV, and it provides high levels of refinement, performance, and technology- Edmunds

BMW was one of the first luxury automakers to get into the crossover game with the X5 but they are one of the last into the 3-row game when they introduced the X7 last year. Everything about this car is big, be it size, shape, or cabin. The X7 continues to carry the legacy of BMW's sporty handling character with fuel-efficient engines. It is also packed with a long list of tech features and safety equipment.

Speaking ownership costs, they are on par with other German competitors. For your information, its true cost to own annually sums up to be $17,900, which is a considerably big amount. Thanks to its fuel-efficient engine, the average cost per mile is $1.19, which is less than the competition. It also earned a generous reliability rating of 76 out of 100 by J.D. Power and ranks above other German rivals.

Features

Great features make the 2020 X7 a superlative family vehicle—with an impressive price to match- The Car Connection

The 2020 BMW X7 comes in two trims- xDrive40i and xDrive50i. Both trims are differentiated by two engines but the AWD system is standard. Pricing for these trims starts from $74,895 for the base 40i trim while the 50i costs $93,595 including the destination charge of $995. The M division of the X7 termed as X7 M50i is priced at $100,595. Apart from the engine difference, both the trims are segregated by the feature list. You can option the X7 with a lot of different interior packs.

One such pack for the BMW X7 is the $4,100 Executive package that adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, a panoramic sky lounge LED roof, heated & cooled cupholders, head-up display, and other creature comforts. On the performance front, the Dynamic Handling package adds M Sport brakes, Active Drive Comfort, and Steering for $3,850. The Parking Assistance package costs just $800 and adds features like a surround-view camera, an automated parking system, and a video/data recorder for the base trim.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The 2020 X7 is reasonably thrifty with fuel for its size- The Car Connection

BMW has managed to beat its rivals by offering the best MPG figures in its class with the 2020 BMW X7. The X7 xDrive40i manages to return an impressive 20 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on a highway, and 22 MPG combined mileage. The more powerful X7 xDrive50i with the V8 engine returns 15 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on a highway while attaining the best-combined mileage of 17 MPG.

Note that the BMW 2020 X7 comes standard with an AWD system and yet, these fuel ratings stand out in the class. A 21.9-gallon fuel tank is employed in the 2020 X7, which is in fact the smallest in the class. Thanks to its excellent efficiency, the X7 can drive up to a combined range of 493 miles in the 40i model and 394 miles in the 50i model.

The BMW X7 is undoubtedly the most fuel-efficient SUV in this competition. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 has the next best fuel efficiency for the power it makes. The Audi Q8 with its mild hybrid system does not do justice here as it only manages to offer fuel economy figures on par with the Land Rover Discovery. The Discovery employs a much larger tank similar to the Mercedes. Hence, it is the GLS 450 that offers the most impressive driving range of all.

Interior
7.9/10

The X7's interior is some of BMW's best work yet- CarAndDriver

BMW has ensured that the 2020 BMW X7 feels like a proper SUV and doesn't miss out on a single front as far as comfort and luxuries are concerned. The seats are plush and have been contoured with high-quality Vernasca leather with 13 interior upholstery color options. The interior feels solidly put together and all buttons feel perfectly positioned. The heated front seats and the power-adjustable front seats and steering adds to the sense of comfort in the X7. The seating capacity reduces to six if you opt for the second-row captain chairs.

Even the rear seats of the BMW X7 are well-cushioned as the front ones. They recline and slide forward as well for adjusting legroom in the third row. Speaking of the third row, the X7 can fit adults at the back and they aren't particularly uncomfortable either. When it comes to technology, the latest 12.3-inch iDrive infotainment system is one of the best in the business. However, it still misses out on Android Auto but offers Apple CarPlay. Being a three-row SUV has its own pros and cons and the cargo space behind the third row is one con.

The 2020 X7 offers just 12.8 cu-ft behind the third row but it expands to 48.6 cu-ft once the third-row seats are power-folded. Furthermore, a cargo capacity of 90.4 cu-ft is available if you fold the second-row seats as well. A power liftgate is standard and all the seats fold flat for a leveled cargo floor. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 offers the best passenger and cargo space while the Land Rover Discovery has a cramped cabin here. The Q7 struggles in terms of third-row space but offers more legroom for the front two rows.

Some main interior highlights of the X7's cabin are mentioned below:

  • 20-way power front leather heated seats
  • Sensatec leatherette upholstery
  • Color-adjustable ambient and footwell lights
  • Quad-zone automatic climate control
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • 12.3-inch touchscreen display & 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster

The new X7 does not stray far from BMW’s current design language- Kelly Blue Book

The 2020 BMW X7 looks like other BMW SUVs from all angles albeit in a bigger avatar. The massive kidney grille will greet most people on the front and will have mixed reactions from people who see the X7 for the first time. The LED headlights are also a big departure from the X3 and X5 since they have a long and narrow design that touches the grille. They are also auto-dimming and adaptive is standard equipment. If you get the 50i model, you can opt for BMW's laser light system. Additionally, you do get LED fog lights at the bottom and there are 12 paint color options to choose from.

The 2020 X7 sits 8.7 inches from the ground, which is good for some off-roading. Also, the air suspension can raise or lower by 1.6 inches if needed. The dimensions are proportionate and well balanced on the whole and the X7 doesn't intimidate from the sides. There is a whole array of creases and body lines flowing all throughout the Bimmer's body and gives the X7, a rather edgy look. The rear design of the X7 is again a departure from the BMW norm. The chrome bar across the back and slender LED taillights serve to make it look much wider than the X5.

The Audi Q7 has the lowest ground clearance in this competition which increases the potential for speed and makes getting in and out of the vehicle easy. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 wheelbase is slightly wider than the X7. hence, its rear legroom is more. At 195.1 inches the Land Rover Discovery is the shortest vehicle here. It becomes easy to maneuver at tight spots.

Some cool exterior features of the X7 are given below:

  • LED adaptive headlights
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Dual-section power rear tailgate
  • Aluminum roof rails & Chrome bodyside moldings
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Chrome grille & Aluminum trim
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • 21 & 22-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.0/10

The BMW X7 is fitted with a wide variety of safety features as standard- Carbuzz

Due to its high-end price, the 2020 BMW X7 was not crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. Therefore, safety ratings are not available. It doesn't imply that the X7 isn't a safe vehicle. The strong body structure of the X7 can reduce the impact of collision energy, thereby protecting the passengers. It also boasts excellent build quality and therefore, it is good to say that the X7 is a safe vehicle.

Apart from its excellent build quality, BMW is also known for providing industry-best driver assistance features in their vehicles. The X7 comes loaded with few standard safety features. The Active Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package adds some best safety technologies. With the following list of safety features, passengers will feel confident every time they go in their X7.

  • Adaptive cruise control w/stop & go
  • Active lane-keeping assistant w/side collision avoidance
  • Steering & traffic-jam assistant
  • Automatic lane change & Evasion assistant
  • Front & rear cross-traffic alert
  • Active driving assistant pro
  • Rearview camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Adaptive headlights w/automatic high beams

Competition
8.0/10

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Audi Q7

Not only is the Audi Q7 more affordable than the BMW, it also offers quicker acceleration and towing performance. While X7 feels more comfortable and also offers better MPG ratings, the Audi is more affordable to own. The Q7 also feels more spacious for both the passengers and their cargo, barring the third row of seats. The Audi styling is also less controversial and hence it would be our preferred choice.

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is slightly powerful and hence, its acceleration is better. In terms of fuel economy, the X7 is better. Inside, the GLS 450 feels slightly more spacious but their cargo dimensions and towing capacity are almost similar. The GLS 450 isn't updated as the X7 when it comes to tech features but boasts enough luxury features. The safety features list of the GLS 450 is a bit shorter than the X7.

2020 BMW X7 vs 2020 Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery employs a mild hybrid powertrain but does not do enough justice to its fuel efficiency. The BMW X7 is much more frugal and has better acceleration performance to offer, but the Discovery is more capable at off-roading with its 4WD drivetrain and also offers much higher towing capabilities. The interior is equally luxurious but the X7 offers more space. The BMW also has higher reliability ratings and gets 3-year complimentary maintenance package, and hence is the winner here.

Final Verdict

The 2020 BMW X7 aims to impress Americans who do not want to compromise on space. It feels agile to drive and changes the perception of a quintessential 3-row SUV in terms of the way it performs and rides. None can match the dynamism of the X7 and the poise with which the X7 takes corners. Add to that, a superbly build interior and plenty of features and you have on your hands, the perfect SUV that can do long-distance touring while giving you the fun of driving a 5 Series sedan.
