Overview

The changes for the 2020 BMW M5 are pretty minor this year which include a new limited edition model and more standard features. Only 35 units of the limited-run BMW M5 Edition 35 Years are set to arrive in the US. It is based on the Competition model and gets an exclusive Frozen Dar Grey II exterior paint and gold interior trim. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless charging, real-time traffic info, and remote services are all standard this year. The 2020 BMW M5 price starts at $104,695 including the $995 destination fee as there has been no price hike made this year as compared to the previous model.

Featuring a 2-trim lineup of M5, the 2020 BMW M5 MSRP can be an expense of $104,695-$111,995 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader 2020 BMW M5 Competition will cost you $7,300 more than the base M5 for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

The standard BMW M5 offers plenty of creature comforts and more than enough performance to justify itself as the perfect daily and weekend track car, and hence that's what we prefer.

The BMW M5 2020 horsepower figures remain the same as last year at 600 hp & 553 lb-ft from its twin-turbo V8. The M5 Competition gets a 17-hp power bump and the 2020 BMW M5 0-60 MPH timing is claimed to be one of the quickest at just 3.2 seconds. While the Porsche Panamera Turbo costs much more, it too falls behind in the straight line. Other rivals like the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S and the Cadillac CTS-V, both offer positives like abundant luxury and affordability respectively, it is the M5 that gets your heart thumping.

2020 BMW M5 for sale

The BMW M5 is available for sale with finance offers starting at a monthly payment of $1,978 at 3.99% APR for well-qualified buyers for a period of 60 months. The M5 lease deals begin at $1,514/month for a 36-month tenure and an annual mileage limit of 10,000 miles. There is a $2,500 down payment common for both the offers while opting for the lease option will require an additional acquisition fee.

For budget-oriented buyers, the used BMW M5 can be availed of with a base price of $13,500. Going for older model years like the 2018 BMW M5 could be a matter of $57,995 and BMW M5 2018 can cost as much as $95,900 along with a listing of up to 79 in total.

Buying Advice

We would choose the M5 standard trim instead of the Competition trim. The performance delivered by the M5 Sedan is already more than enough to get through challenging roads. The kind of ride comfort and handling is similar to the Competition trim. However, we’d like to spend some extra bucks on the optional packages that come in handy with the available trim levels.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 BMW M5 is offered in two trims, the Standard at $104,695 and the M5 competition at $111,995. The latter is not only more powerful but also more equipped in terms of features. They see a common powertrain of 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engines capable of generating 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. This particular Beemer is known for its ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds flat.

The 2020 model year sees the inclusion of Apple CarPlay as standard across all trims, moreover, the M5 competition gets better power and ride handling. These aspects help BMW have an edge over its competition such as the 2020 Cadillac CTS-V and the 2020 Mercedes E63 S.

Features
8.0/10

"Brutally quick and fast, playful all-wheel-drive system, eminently luxurious inside." - Car and Driver

The 2020 BMW M5 is offered in two trims, Standard and Competition, both the variants get a 4.4L turbocharged V8 engine. The standard trim comes priced at $104,695 and the Competition trim is priced at $111,995. The Competition trim is not only more sporty but also more equipped in terms of features on the inside. We recommend

We would recommend you to go in for the standard trim rather than choosing the Competition trim. The 2020 M5 Standard trim offers enough luxury already, spending an additional 8 grand wouldn't be worth it, we believe. Anyhow, both the trims on offer have the same 4.4-liter powerhead.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

"The EPA estimates that the regular M5 and its Competition variant will earn 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway." - Car and Driver

The 2020 BMW M5 even though equipped with a 4.4L V8 engine, manages to return a decent fuel economy. However, it clearly isn't the best in the segment for the same. It returns 15 miles to a gallon for city drives, 21 miles to a gallon for Highway cruises, and a combined reading of 19 miles per gallon. This gives it a combined range of 381 miles and a highway range of 422 miles.

Here we have the 2020 Mercedes E63 S with a better fuel economy to offer, firstly it comes with a larger tank measuring 21.1 gallons. The BMW M5 loses out by 1 gallon here. The Merc further offers a highway mpg of 23 and this gives it the best range for the same. On the other hand, the most powerful engine in the class, that of the 2020 Cadillac CTS-V, gets a compromised fuel efficiency. It further even gets the smallest fuel tank capacity in competition, measuring 19 gallons only.

Interior
9.2/10

“The metamorphosis from the standard 5 Series to the M5 results in a suitable amount of interior sportiness that doesn't come off as gimmicky. The materials quality is impeccable and meets expectations for a $100,000-plus luxury sedan.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort of the 2020 BMW M5

The 2020 BMW M5 offers an interior that can accommodate 5 individuals comfortably. There is no need to mention the comfort and luxury that a BMW otherwise offers, even this one gets all that you could ask for, from heated seats to climate control. It also gets the best in class infotainment offering, it features Apple CarPlay, a 5-inch screen, and a 7-speakers sound set up.

The dashboard of the new BMW M5 carries the seamless design language with a floating type infotainment display. Ambient lighting also adds to the charming aura of the interior which truly shows its colors at night. In terms of dimension, the BMW offers a spacious room for its passengers not only in the front row but also in the second row of seats.

When compared with the competition the 2020 BMW M5 has the most spacious front row, especially in terms of shoulder room where it offers 58.7 inches, it also offers a spacious rear room, in fact, the best in class. The next best offering in terms of space is provided by the Mercedes E63 S. In terms of dimension it is almost identical to the Beemer, with a few inches up and down. The 2020 Cadillac CTS-V offers a comparatively smaller interior cabin, especially in its second row. The Cadillac has the best legroom to offer in the front row measuring 45.7 inches.

Infotainment of the 2020 BMW M5

BMW’s iDrive technology is one of the best examples of an engineering marvel. The tech gets enhanced year after year. The infotainment comes with an integrated touchpad on the main control dial. The menu is quick to respond to and user-friendly. The standard infotainment system consists of:

  • BMW’s iDrive infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay (Subscription based)
  • 5-inch screen
  • USB port
  • Bluetooth
  • HD Radio
  • Seven speakers

Cargo of the 2020 BMW M5

Attracting by providing a fine passenger room isn't all that is expected. The audience always looks out for a decent cargo space too. The 2020 BMW M5 offers 18.7 cubic feet as its cargo room. For a sporty Sedan such as itself, this number seems to be a decent offering.

In comparison with its competition, the Mercedes E63 S has a slightly larger cargo room, measuring 19 cubic feet. The 2020 Cadillac once again ranks last as it offers only 13.7 cubic feet as its cargo room. The Cadillac is bound to lose attention from potential customers as it lacks deeply in terms of passenger and cargo room on offer.

Dimensions and weight of the 2020 BMW M5

I don't really need to say this but the 2020 BMW M5 is absolutely stunning. With a sporty and elegant exterior body design there are several more changes to this model year's exteriors. Firstly, the M5 is wider and taller than the standard 5 series sedan. The M5 gets a carbon fiber reinforced plastic roof, which adds strength and cuts weight, both in favor of what a buyer would be looking for.

The looks are further enhanced by sleek headlamps and a larger grille. Finally, the exteriors are made to stand out by its 19-inch wheels. The best driver experience belongs to the BMW and the reason behind it is now clearly visible, its wheelbase measures 117.4 inches and a ground clearance of 4.6 inches. Laying low and long helps a lot in delivering a fine drive experience and reducing downforce.

The 2020 Cadillac CTS weighs the least at 4141 pounds. It measures the longest at 197.6 inches and yet gets the shortest wheelbase of 114.6 inches, surprising but true.

Exterior Features of the 2020 BMW M5

Some of the exterior features include:

  • Body-colored front and rear bumpers

Safety

The safety rating of the 2020 BMW M5

With regard to its safety offering, the 2020 BMW M5 has a host of safety features to offer backed by a fine reputation of keeping its occupants safe. It is also noticed that high-performance vehicles get an equally high safety offering, the reason behind which is obvious, with greater performance comes greater risk and thus there is greater safety offered. Unfortunately, the 2020 BMW M5 has not been tested by private or federal authorities such as the NHTSA or the IIHS. And hence we do not exactly know where this vehicle delivers fabulous safety and where it does not.

The Safety featuresof the 2020 BMW M5

  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Front and rear Head Protection System (HPS)
  • Driver's and passenger's front airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with advanced technology: dual-threshold, dual-stage deployment; and front-passenger-seat sensors designed to prevent unnecessary airbag deployment
  • 3-point safety belts with force limiters and head restraints at all seating positions
  • Seat-mounted front side-impact airbags
  • Front safety belts with automatic pretensions
  • LATCH attachments for child-restraint safety installation

Competition
9.0/10

2020 BMW M5 VS 2020 Cadillac CTS-V

The BMW M5 looks familiar inside-out. It only features minor changes. The 8-speed automatic transmission took over the six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch in the predecessor model. The all-wheel-drive configuration promises a smooth-shifting as well. On the other hand, the Cadillac CTS-V offers an amazing Supercharged V8 engine. It is a value for money car because as far as the pricing is concerned, the cost is apt due to the missing ceramic brakes.

2020 BMW M5 VS 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-class

The Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63 S is said to be one of the closest rivals of the BME M5. Both come assembled with turbocharged V8, an all-wheel-drive system. Benz's interior looks classier than the M5. It is quite difficult to pick one among the two as they stand equally toward their promise. So, it depends on your budget and luxury demand.

Final Verdict

The 2020 BMW M5 is still fun to drive with its ultimate dynamics and road ethics. With the introduction of all-wheel drive, the M5 brings you more comfort to your hands. The M5 never gets out of class. Since its inception, the carmaker has tried to make it a more user-friendly and luxurious vehicle. There might be a lot of close rivals in the segment but the BMW M5 has its own magical charm.
