2022 BMW M4 Coupe User Complaints and Problems
As far as German car ownership goes, reliability is a factor that can make or break the entire experience. The name of the company is something a lot of buyers associate with reliability and BMW has not enjoyed the best reputation in that regard. However, this still paints an incomplete picture. One of the best ways to understand the reliability is by hearing what owners have to say regarding BMW M4's common problems. Although a low-volume sports car such as the BMW M4 did not register a lot of complaints, we can understand more about it by looking at cars it shares parts with.
To achieve this, our focus is on the 2022 BMW 4 Series which serves as the platform the car in question is built on. While some of these problems could be exclusive to the regular version, in the absence of data about the M4, this is the best we can do. This section of the article will focus only on issues associated with the current generation as listing the problems of the previous generation will not be an accurate model of what the current generation will face. Mechanical problems:
- One owner stated that the car’s brakes did not respond to the driver's inputs while driving at a very slow speed. The issue is identified to be one with the brake booster. It was replaced by the dealer.
Electrical system problems:
- One owner reports that the car shut itself down completely and all panel lights turned black. The car went dead and there were no lights, signals, instrument panel, or radio. The contact veered to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle. The dealership diagnosed that an unknown software failure had occurred. And although the car was repaired, it re-occurred while driving. All this happened when the car had barely 200 miles on it.
Safety problems:
- One owner states that the Pirelli tires that come with the car have a bump on the sidewall even with only 5300 miles on it. The owner is very concerned about the safety of the car.

The 2022 BMW M4 Coupe has not had any complaints reported yet and the same applies to the BMW 4 Series. The 2021 model year had only two complaints and the 2020 model had one complaint, all of which are reported above. Another fact is that we should note at this point is that none of the complainants have had to face dire consequences. Earlier generations had a BMW M4 drivetrain malfunction, but thankfully it is not there now. Since parts are expensive in the car such as the M4, this is a reassuring fact.
2022 BMW M4 Coupe Recalls
Complaints aside, the current generation of BMW 4 Series has only generated very few recalls. The manufacturer has issued a total of two recalls for it that have concerned various problems with the car. There have been two recalls for the 4 Series model as well but since the brand has not applied the same to be M4, we can look beyond them. It is reassuring that the BMW M4 differential problem has not occurred recently.
This goes on to show that the car has been fairly reliable despite being a BMW and that is high praise considering how notorious these cars were a while ago. We can see that there have been two recalls for the car and both of them have been concerning an aspect of safety. Since this is a dire problem that requires immediate intervention; the brand has responded on time and done the necessary fixes. Some problems are persisting still, but we hope that the manufacturer has taken these up on a case-by-case basis and found adequate solutions for the buyers. What we can still see is that the response has been good.
Which model year of the BMW M4 Coupe should you avoid?
The current generation of the BMW M4 Coupe has been on sale from 2021 only and hence we only have a sample set of two model years to say anything about. Even if you take a look at the previous generation, you will not see many red flags. The last generation was one of the peaks when it comes to reliability from BMW. One of the only issues it had was the BMW M4 DCT transmission problem. Luckily, the brand has moved away from this transmission.
The M4 is based on the BMW 4 Series which is in turn based on the BMW 3 Series. These cars have been produced in large numbers and have not reported any major problem areas in recent times. For this reason, we would not suggest any model year that you should be avoiding. In the used car market, you will be decently lucky to find good examples. These cars are incredibly fun to drive but they require a bit of tender love and care when maintaining.

The BMW M4 Coupe is an excellent performance buy and can reward you with an ownership experience like no other. Its looks can be polarizing but it is a thoroughly modern car with all the bells and whistles one can imagine. The car gives you several things to enjoy including excellent build quality, amazing materials, and tons of features. There aren’t many BMW M4 reliability issues either.
