My worse experience ever in the 20+ years I have been leasing vehicles has been with Volvo, and Karp Volvo as a dealer. Had many problems with the XC90 and XC60 from computer problems, electrical problems, battery problems, issues with tires (tires had a wobbly sound coming from them that they could not resolve. Even on lease return they hammered me over the head with all kinds of charges and would not even have a reasonable discussionRead More

The global market popularity of Volvo is not unknown to people, especially those who are acquainted with the XC60 model brand. The car’s addition to the list of the world’s top compact luxury SUV picks somehow seems to be a tough blow for some of its close rivals like the Land Rover Range Rover, the Mercedes Benz GLC Class, and the BMW X3 from 2019. The brilliant XC60 enabled Volvo to hit a sales volume of 204,965 cars in the respective year, which also appeared to be the top most selling model from the brand. The vehicle was able to reach furthermore expectations of the owners in the upcoming years if its faulty forward collision avoidance and problematic auto speed control system never challenged its market reputation. Apart from these problems, certain users complained about facing electric service brake malfunction along with 12 other complaints and 7 recalls which are registered on the NHTSA website for the respective year.

User Complaints and Problems

Electrical Problems

  • Problematic automatic speed control- Faulty speed control sensors in a vehicle might accelerate or slow down when it fails to maintain the required speed limit while running on highways or city roads. Such issues might trigger the chances of overspeeding compelling the car to ram or hit any object in the front. The dealership should inspect the issue and repair or replace the faulty sensors with newer ones.
  • Unresponsive forward collision avoidance- The role forward collision avoidance system in a car is to detect the distance of the vehicle that’s right in front of the car and maintain a speed and distance to avoid possible chances of collision. When this feature malfunctions, it's quite possible for the respective vehicle owner to ram or hit any car or object on the front. Users have found one such issue in the Volvo XC60 SUVs. The dealership should take care of it and get the faulty forward crash avoidance sensors repaired with new ones.
  • Electric service brake malfunction- The electronic braking sensors are provided in the vehicles to detect whenever the car intends to stop so that the automatic brakes can be deployed. When it fails to do so, the sensors may not deploy the automatic brakes, ultimately compelling the vehicle to crash or ram any object, vehicle, or human ahead of the car, triggering an accident. Such issues might be inconvenient for the drivers when they expect the vehicle's auto brakes to engage for stopping the car or to park it somewhere. Volvo should instruct the dealers to find the probable cause behind one such malfunction and fix it soon.

Safety Problems

  • Issue with the airbag deployment- Problematic retractors in XC60s may prevent the airbags from deployment when the car encounters a road accident. Such issues might show up due to faulty airbag defective sensors, or loose electrical wiring stopping the airbag system to respond normally during a crash event. Volvo should issue a recall due to the faulty airbag deflectors under safety concerns and ask the dealers to repair the faulty airbag system with newer ones.

Structural Problems

  • Tailgate lifting problems- Structural defects in the tailgate lifting arms of the XC60 might freeze during the winter season, preventing the car from latching the tailgate doors properly by pressing the tailgate closing button. The brand should ask the dealership to fix such manufacturing defects in the tailgate lifting arms free of cost in the vehicles of the owners who have faced such issues.

Should you Buy a 2019 Volvo XC60?

It would be unjust to reject the 2019 Volvo XC60  from the preference list of those who are willing to buy the car at a resale price tag. Though the car’s brand integrity was sufficiently compromised due to the possible risk of fire ignition from the faulty charging cable. Apart from that inadequate software updates affecting the Vehicle Connectivity Module to function properly was also a significant problem that challenged Volvo’s brand fame. However, Volvo took instant action by issuing a recall on every problem and malfunction that challenged the market popularity of the XC60 and asked the dealers to resolve them soon. That somehow helped the vehicles to get rid of the technical problems that the vehicle met before, with the assurance that the revived ones were ready for resale. If someone is willing to buy the revived vehicles with no issues and a zero recall rate we would appreciate their decision always.
