Overview

The Volkswagen Jetta is a 4 door compact saloon that has been ruling the German sedan market for a very long time, and it still retains all the good qualities and the character of its predecessors. For 2016, it looks amazing, drives excellent, and feels premium inside the cabin. It offers a wide range of engine options to choose from, and all the engines are absolutely praise-worthy.

Buying Advice

We recommend the SEL trim for its abundant features list and even more comfort. It also gets optional leather bolstered seats for an enhanced driving experience and heated front comfort sports seats for better comfort inside the cabin. Some other highlight features include Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning, V-Tex Leatherette Seat Trim, and Cornering Lights.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2016 Jetta is certainly well packed with a lot of features and opulence. The base price is also very affordable and doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket. This is German technology at the most affordable price. Volkswagen offers a massive trim range with features and options as per your need. Moreover, it rivals the likes of other worthy cars like the 2016 Honda Civic, 2016 Toyota Corolla, and 2016 Chevrolet Cruze.

Features
8.0/10

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is available in 5 different trims, and certainly, all these trims tick all boxes when it comes to the ride quality, features, comfort, and performance. The base trim offers features like LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), Day-Night Rearview Mirror, Low Tire Pressure Warning, and a Rear View Camera System, which makes the base trim favorable for safety and comfort driving. We Recommend:

We recommend the SEL trim for its abundant features list and even more comfort. Some other highlight features include Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning, V-Tex Leatherette Seat Trim, and Cornering Lights.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Volkswagen Jetta offers a 1.4 L turbocharged inline-4 engine as standard on the trims except for the ones that end in ‘SEL’ and ‘GLI,’ which get a 1.8L inline-4 engine and more powerful 2.0L inline 4 engine. The standard 1.4 Liter engine in the base version produces 150 hp and 184 lb-ft. of torque. The 1.4 Liter motor is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission unit and is only available with an FWD drivetrain option just like all the other trims.

The powertrain is fuel-efficient and certainly makes it a lively car to drive, but it is underpowered when compared to some of its rivals, but surprisingly, it performs better than its counterparts even though it is less powerful. Its strong torque output gives a grunt and strong powerband. Moreover, it is capable of hitting 0-60 mph in 8.4 seconds and clocks a quarter-mile run in 16.3 seconds. However, the top speed of the Jetta is not specified.

When comparing all the cars with the stats available on the table, all the sedans in the competition are similarly priced, but none of the cars brings the ride quality and driving pleasure that the Jetta has on offer. The Chevrolet Cruze happens to be the fastest car. The closest contender to the Chevrolet Cruze seems to be the Jetta despite having an underpowered engine to support it.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The compact sedans are built to commute family with comfort and to deliver an outstanding fuel economy, and the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta definitely lives up to it. The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta offers a fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highways. It has a fuel tank of 14.5 gallons, and it manages to slam its opponents in terms of fuel efficiency and range. The sedan can traverse a distance of 406 miles in the city and 580 miles while cruising on the highway. However, the higher trims with more powerful engines drop in mileage by a bit.

In comparison, the Volkswagen Jetta wins the fuel economy competition. The Corolla loses to all its rivals with a mileage of 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. When comparing the overall range, again Volkswagen stands ahead of its rivals with 4.6 miles in the city and 5820 miles on the highway, all thanks to its class-leading fuel tank capacity of 14.5 gallons.

Interior
7.0/10

There is no shortage of features inside the opulent cabin of the Volkswagen Jetta. The whole cabin is well designed and competes strongly with the rivals. It offers comfortable seating for 5 passengers. The steering wheel is chunky and premium to hold, especially the leather steering wheel in higher trims. The center console is well laid out with easy-to-use buttons.

The higher trims also get premium leather upholstery for extra comfort. That being said, let’s check out the interior dimensions. The Jetta offers a great interior space if not the best. It offers headroom of 38.2 inches in the front and 37.1 inches in the rear, which are mediocre headroom figures. Nevertheless, it shines in the cargo space, offering a cargo capacity of 15.7 inches, which fits enough luggage to enjoy your weekend getaway.

Exterior
6.0/10

The exterior of the Volkswagen Jetta is one of the most exciting things. It looks striking and outshines some of its rivals when it comes to exterior looks. The headlights look sharp and aggressive and incorporate projector lights with DRLs that adorn the look even better. The design of the bodywork is truly spectacular with multiple clean lines right from the front end to the rear end.

The taillamps go well with the exterior of the car and are unarguably one of the best-looking taillights in its segment. Moving on to the exterior dimensions, Volkswagen Jetta weighs 2,939 lbs. It has a length of 182.2 inches, a width of 70 inches, a height of 56.6 inches, and a wheelbase of 104.4 inches. The Jetta happens to have the smallest proportions and dimensions overall.
