Overview

The realm of the sedan is interesting but is fading at the same time with the onset of many capable segments. The Subaru Impreza might be among those who have managed to hold their ground. But the path does not seem to be an easy one to follow as it will be having no major update for 2016. The 4-door sedan is quite practical for the price tag at which it is offered.

Buying Advice

As it has been mentioned earlier that the variation in offers is comparatively huge with respect to the increment in the pricing. Therefore, it is way too logical to choose Limited as it tends to offer better creature comfort and better contact patch on the road with wider wheels. It is true there is no significant gap in performance but the interior ergonomic can keep intact for long hauling which might be lacking in the lower trims. Hence, the Limited is the best value for the money you pay.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Impreza hits the road in three formats namely the Base, Premium, and the Limited. The competition on the other hand is increasing in numbers but the most desirable ones to compare would be Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and the Hyundai Elantra. The initial pricing of $19,090 gets even more expensive with the CVT transmission in the higher trims. So, it will be quite interesting to see where this machinery will stand among the rivals.

Features
7.5/10

The Subaru Impreza comes in three variants and all of them tend to have a few characteristics exclusive to them. This drives home the fact about the wheels which get bigger as the trims go on higher. The Base gets the 15" x 6.0J Steel Wheels whereas the Premium is placed on the thicker 16" x 6.5J Silver Finish Aluminum Alloy Wheels. The Limited, in the end, has the biggest pairs of 17" x 7.0J Silver Finish Aluminum Alloy Wheels. Apart from this, they do sway from each other in the interactive display multimedia, the Limited having a 7” unit while the Base has a 6.2” unit. Once done with that, then they fairly gauge on the same level in most segments.

After the comparison is done, parallelism comes into play. They seem to share a lot of features in common which include the EPAS and Electronic Stability Control. The storyline includes the Power-heated seats which begin their acknowledgment from the Premium trim onwards. The cost of each of them does not have a huge gap which can allow you to unfold your expense for better offers. On the whole, it seems to vary a lot within its trims with a relatively lower price gap.

We Recommend

As it has been mentioned earlier that the variation in offers is comparatively huge with respect to the increment in the pricing. Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Subaru Impreza is one of those sedans which has a poor trade-off in its economy and performance curve. None of the aforementioned is satisfactory in any sense. It offers the least dominant figures of 25 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg overall. It is somehow capitalized by its fuel tank of 14.5 gallons with which it has one of the best range coverage of up to 406 miles. But this alone can’t be sufficient enough to wash off the stain on its powertrain and daily commuting.

Just like the previous segment, Toyota seems to dominate here as well. A mileage of 37 mpg on the highway and 31 overall is the leader of the lot. The podium is shared by the Hyundai Elantra this time but the former swift past with its better range accessibility. This makes us conclude that Toyota Corolla is the most practical powertrain among the rivals with a superior economy and acceleration and can hamper the market share of Impreza quite easily.

Interior
8.8/10

This is something that observes a huge trim gap. The Base trim is sub-par and it pushes you to go for the higher trims. The base even lacks the interior tech touches which are desirable for long hauling along with infotainment lackluster. The elder siblings own power-heated bucket seats which are perfect for you to snuggle. Then comes the Automatic Air Conditioning which is manual in the Base one. The touch is satiated by the Cloth Upholstery and Full Cloth Headliner. It has a few lighting embedded around the cargo space as well. But it is still believed that the accents could have been upscaled a bit more.

The spaciousness within the cabin is satisfactory for the Impreza and Elantra. The other two also find their status on par with them but they get an edge over the previous two in their comfortable rear row seating. Corolla shines out again with much better ergonomics along with practical cargo spacing. If the cramped rear row can be sorted then Impreza could even see itself on the same status as well but for now, the sail is way too distant to the shores. Thus, it is necessary to understand that a few tech-ends can’t make up for practicality. A few of the interior features in the 2016 Subaru Impreza are:

  • Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Cloth Upholstery
  • Full Cloth Headliner
  • Power-heated Seats

How intuitive is the 2016 Subaru Impreza’s infotainment unit?

The Subaru Impreza has either a 6.2” Multimedia System or 7” Multimedia which have been embedded into it as per trims. The infotainment package carries a 6-speaker audio set that will be loud enough to make music echo in the cabin. It does have Bluetooth Audio Streaming Connectivity alongside Radio Broadcast Data System. The Impreza has been uploaded with Speed Compensated Volume Control, Hands-Free Phone Connectivity in pair with the SiriusXM in the Limited trim. If one has to summarize it then it is pretty much loaded with all you need during a long hauling and daily commuting. Some of the infotainment features in the 2016 Subaru Impreza are:

  • Hands-Free Phone Connectivity
  • Radio Broadcast Data System
  • SiriusXM
  • 6-speaker audio set
  • 6.2” Multimedia System

Exterior
8.8/10

There is nothing much to comment on the exterior outfit of this 4-door sedan. It has urban looking curvature with a traditional extended trunk. Its high roofline descends gradually to the bonnet but the crafted design is not appealing at all at the first glance. The crater on the front might have been given to boasting the curviness but fails to do so miserably. The 15" x 6.0J Steel Wheels in the base trim does little to improve the status. The Impreza has a rear lip spoiler for the so-called sportiness enthusiasm but yet again it does not go well along with the silhouette when viewed sideways. Thus, it won’t be surprising to say that it misses its road presence.

The dimensions of all the sedans are pretty much within the limits only. Lower ground clearance with lower height to ensure better airflow down the belly and desirable center of gravity can be visually spotted. Even the weight of the rivals is somewhat close to one another and will hardly make an impact with a forward mass transfer at the time of braking and backward mass transfer during acceleration. Thus, this department ends inconclusively with no specific supremacy determinant. Some of the exterior features are:

  • Lip spoiler
  • 15" x 6.0J Steel Wheels
  • Chrome bar Grille
  • Fully Galvanized Steel Panels

Safety
8.8/10

The Impreza, unlike some of its domains, is decent in its structural impact resilience. The crumple zone to take on the crash-induced stress and material ultimate strength factor take the NHTSA Rating to 5-star overall along with a 5-star in the rollover. The safety does get an extension with other attachments of standard active features like the ABS, Traction Control, and the Electronic Stability Control. Since the design itself allows a lower rollover risk percentage of 9.9%, Subaru does not find any need for the Rollover Stability Control. A few of the safety features in the 2016 Subaru Impreza:

  • ABS
  • Airbags system
  • Traction Control
  • Electronic Stability Control

Final Verdict

The Subaru Impreza really does not compel you to own it in the first place, the presence of sedans like Toyota Corolla even dampens the urge. The performance and economy along with compromised rear row spacing do more harm than good. The price is therefore not justified to be spent on it and one can go for any other option before making the choice.

Bought the car in 2018 after having 1 owner based on a CarFax report. Since then it works great with my commute to work and for a car ride where I needed to go. For the purchase loaned out around $18k, with fantastic fuel mileage that I need to drive around 350 to 400 miles before refueling. And being all-wheel drive, has the horsepower to go better than a regular SUV. On a hot Summer day, it can...
