The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan that isn’t necessarily known for its performance but packs in the sturdy German build quality. In terms of reliability, Volkswagen is slightly pricey to maintain with expensive parts and repairs. The manufacturer has recalled the car 8 times while the users have reported 152 official complaints. Not all the issues are serious ones, which is why the car was sold to over 130,000 customers. Volkswagen has priced the Jetta at $18,425, which puts it right next to the Japanese rivals, providing a better value in terms of quality and is up against cars like the Mazda 3, the Toyota Corolla, and the Honda Civic. Let’s understand the problems in detail and analyze if it’s the right pick.

User complaints and problems

Electrical Problems

  • Ignition cylinder – Users were not able to turn the car off or pull the key out as it was found to be stuck in the ignition. At times, it required them to wiggle the key to release it or they had to wait for a while before it releases as it normally would. The dealers found the ignition cylinder to be stuck due to a faulty pin that locks the key along with a faulty ignition switch that fails to disengage the safety feature after turning the engine off.
  • Charging port – Users weren’t able to charge their phone as the charging outlet had no power being supplied. The issue was diagnosed and there were no issues with the fuse, however, the mechanics found damaged wiring due to a possible shorting that needed to be replaced.
  • Horn – Very often, the owners complained about needing a fuse replacement as it blows out frequently, leaving a dead horn.
  • Clockspring – Users noticed the cruise control to not work after trying multiple times and also noticed the airbag warning light flashing at random times. There were other similar cases reported which were all related to a faulty clock spring that had to be replaced. It was stated that the wires could get brittle and break, which caused the failure.

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine – The driver was said to deteriorate as the car lost power all of a sudden and entered limp mode. Certain users also reported falling ill after driving the car for a few days which the dealers confirmed to happen because of inhaling carbon monoxide that came out of an exhaust leak. The dealer had to change a faulty exhaust manifold gasket to fix the issue.
  • Fuel system – Users reported seeing fuel dripping underneath the car which was found by the mechanics to happen from a faulty high-pressure fuel pump located close to the engine. Fuel leaks onto a hot engine could also cause fire and the pump had to be replaced.
  • Transmission – Drivers noticed a hesitation in the way the car moved with the transmission not shifting gears. The car ultimately stalled without any warning and was towed to the dealers. The report stated that there was a transmission fluid leak that caused some internal damage to the components. This meant the transmission had to be rebuilt or replaced depending on the degree of damage.
  • Brakes – It was found to be impossible to slow the car down as the brakes were reported to fail. The users had to either run into something or let the car slow down gradually which is very dangerous. It was said that the assembly failed due to a fault related to the brake cylinders which needed to be replaced.
  • Suspension – Both the rear springs were said to fracture while driving, snapping into two parts. This was suspected to be a quality issue and needed to be replaced with newer springs.

Safety Problems

  • Seatbelt – It was almost impossible for a few users to latch the seatbelt in place as the latch was found to be faulty. This issue was common among the owners and the only fix was to replace the seatbelt unit.

Exterior Problems

  • Headlights – Users found the nighttime visibility to be very slim and after some investigation, it was found that the low beam lights would disengage when the high beams are turned on. The dealers stated that it operated as designed and there were no flaws with the unit.

Should you buy the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta?

The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta is definitely one of the best cars in the segment and to offer similar reliability compared to its Japanese counterparts, is a huge feat. Volkswagen took barely any time to identify the headlight issue that users complained about and immediately sent out recall notifications to fix the problem. However, they did take a while to solve the braking cylinder issue which left users driving the car with weak brakes for a while. Since these issues weren’t reported in large numbers, it’s safe to say that the Jetta is a safe bet to place your money on, and this sedan is our recommended choice as it offers a much better build quality when compared to its rivals.
