Overview

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom is the pinnacle of luxury that money can get you on four wheels. There is no car above the Phantom, making it the penultimate benchmark in terms of luxury, class, and an out-of-the-world driving experience. Since history has it, most of the Phantoms have been chauffeur-driven exotics but the newest one offers better driving dynamics, making people actually prefer driving this land-yacht themselves.

Buying Advice

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom is a standalone model and there are no other choices left with the customer. The interior customization is a thing that purely depends on the individual’s taste and there are no recommendations to be made on that aspect. The only thing we can recommend is to add in the Driver Assistance Systems Package that’ll add to make the drive more comfortable.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Phantom comes with a massive twin-turbocharged 6.75L V12 under its bonnet that lends it nearly 560 horsepower and propels it to the quarter-mile in just 12.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155 MPH. The ultra-luxurious car doesn’t have a competition per se but if we were to take the closest ones, the 2020 Bentley Mulsanne and the 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650 fit the bill perfectly with all the luxury and performance they have.

Features
9.9/10

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom comes as a single model which is loaded to the brim and is super-customizable given all the packages and individual options on offer. The Phantom is divided into two “trims” - standard and Extended Wheelbase (EWB) - but both carry the same equipment levels. As for the features, the Phantom gets everything under the sun that is there in terms of comfort.

For adding on more features from the standard list the company also offers various packages, the most famous of which are the Smoker’s Package, the Phantom package, and the Driver Assistance Systems Package which add in features like ashtrays, wider outboard seats, dual rear entertainment display screens, Rolls-Royce monograms on all headrests, and driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control and night vision.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom isn’t a car that is particularly synonymous with fuel economy, especially given the massive V12 under the hood and all the bulk it carries around. As for the EPA, the ratings stand at a measly 12 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway, for a combined of 14 MPG from a 23.8-gallon gas tank. Given this, the estimated 333-mile range combined isn’t a high number but the luxury in the car justifies the low range and the decent fuel economy from the gas chugger.

The Maybach S650 is the most fuel-efficient car in the comparison, rewarding the driver with 16 MPG on the tank in combined driving - both in the city and on the highway. This feat is followed by the Phantom, while the Bentley Mulsanne Speed gets the worst economy that can be blamed on the massive weight that the car needs to carry. The Merc’s advantage is still maintained on the highway in terms of range despite the smallest fuel tank managing 464 miles.

Interior
9.3/10

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom has some serious luxury going on inside the cabin with exquisite materials all around coupled with unmatchable craftsmanship doing its thing to mesmerize the occupants and make them sleep in luxury. The colors and the materials inside are very much customizable by the individual and hence, there’s no benchmark as such. The dual-tone scheme is a very lively output nonetheless.

The door panels are very clean and posh - both visually and quality-wise. The door handles have a silver chrome finish and have a couple of speakers for blasting the music. There is a choice of leather on the armrest and the door pocket as well. The armrest also gets a trim piece which is also customizable by the customers themselves. The dashboard is massive and looks more like a bridge of a ship. The dashboard has a trim piece surrounding it, while the front is covered in glass beneath which hides the center-mounted infotainment screen and the classic analog clock.

The seats are super comfortable and are as good as an expensive couch stuck inside the car. They’re upholstered in super-soft leather and can also be customized colors vis the upholstery and the colours. The headrests are massive and the padding is super thick with piping that matches the dashboard’s trim. The Rolls Royce badge is embroidered into the seats for a sense of command and also to appeal to your eyes. These seats come with heating, power-adjustability, ventilation, massaging, and heated massaging as standard.

The rear seats dictate a very similar story wherein the occupants can easily stretch their legs out and relax while the car glides over the road. The center console in the rear gets all the controls for the car and can also recline the rear seats as well. The center console has all the climate settings, along with the climate vents on the side frame as well. The rear armrest gets cupholders and a cubby as well, while a fridge in the centre of the seats is optional to keep the drinks cool.

The dimensions for the Phantom aren’t out but from how humongous the car is, and the space given inside, the Phantom is no slouch when it comes to being spacious inside and has an interior that rings the bells with the best materials ever used in a car. Between the other two, the Mulsanne is the bigger and the more spacious one with a bigger boot to carry more luggage inside. The boot space is bigger than the Merc but falls short of the Rolls with 21% more space in the latter. The poshness in the Rolls’ cabin is highlighted by:

  • Power-closing doors with concealed umbrellas
  • Leather headliner with starlight-like illumination
  • Rear bench seat with power-reclining, heating, and ventilation
  • Heated and ventilated front seats with massage functions
  • Panoramic sunroof

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom?

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen which is mounted in the center of the dashboard and is powered by BMW’s iDrive system, with some Rolls Royce specific changes obviously. This system comes standard with voice controls, gesture controls, and a navigation system; all of which work flawlessly without a single stutter or lag. In terms of features, the system also hosts all the modern features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, multiple USB ports, and an HD display as well for clear images while reversing. Some of the highlighting infotainment features include:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen
  • 16-speaker audio system
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Bluetooth
  • Optional 18-speaker audio system

Exterior
9.3/10

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom’s design speaks for itself. It is very distinct and there’s no one who can’t tell that the car is a Rolls from the first look. The car has a lot of chrome on its body which reflects the luxury it packs inside. The front is absolutely imposing and has a very commanding aura to it with the big grille and the LED tail lights, in the center of which is the beautiful Spirit of Ecstacy.

The car is a pretty long vehicle - longer than any other luxury sedan - in its shortest form. This length is further cemented by big alloy wheels, big doors, huge windows, and the weighted center nut which is a statement in itself. In the rear, there are the typical Rolls Royce tail lights with a big trunk opening and dual exhaust tips.

The Rolls Royce Phantom is the most massive car in the segment by proportion but is not the heaviest - a feat seen in the Mulsanne Speed. The Phantom takes a massive jump in proportions making it the most difficult car to drive around in the city, let alone in the tighter spaces and parking lots. The higher ground clearance helps in easily smoothening out all the undulations of the road and makes the drive very smooth, while the longer wheelbase translates to a lot of legroom inside. That said, some of the highlighting exterior features include:

  • Adaptive air suspension
  • Auto-levelling LED headlights
  • LED taillights
  • Rear-wheel steering
  • 21-inch wheels
  • Weighted hub caps for the wheels

Safety
9.0/10

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom is one of the most expensive sedans available in the market and comes with all the modern safety tech that one expects from the segment, given the tight competition from the Mulsanne Speed. The Phantom’s body has been reinforced to be more rigid and stronger than before which adds to the weight as well. As for the active driver assistance features, the car comes with:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Lane departure warning
  • Surround-view camera system
  • Head-up display
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Optional night vision

2020 Rolls Royce Phantom Vs. Bentley Mulsanne Speed

The Bentley Mulsanne Speed and the Rolls Royce Phantom are the two most luxurious cars in the segment and, needless to say, get a lot of goodies and exclusivity at their helm. The performance from both the cars’ engines are impressive for the weight, while the interior space and the overall comfort and customisations on offer are out of the world. The Mulsanne’s only disadvantage comes in its weight that makes itself feel while on the move. The Phantom is more agile and handles better, also buying points in fuel economy and range.

2020 Rolls Royce Phantom Vs. 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650

The 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650 is an ultra-luxury car that has a very rev happy engine that is quick and can also sustain impressive fuel economy numbers. The range is affected a bit due to the smallest tank in the segment but apart from that, it is as good and luxurious as the Rolls Royce, albeit with less customisation and a lesser “posh feel”. The Phantom offers a bevy of options and along with that comes the Rolls Royce exclusivity - a thing that people want when shelling out this much money.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Rolls Royce Phantom is the epitome of automobile engineering and gives a statement to whoever sees the car rolling down the road, or even parked somewhere. The Phantom is the most luxurious car in the market that has quite a significant premium over the other similarly-equipped cars and commands that premium with a sense of superiority due to what the car signifies - ultra craftsmanship with a truckload of sophistication.
