Overview

Harboring an influential place in high-end luxury sedans, the Bentley Flying Spur is considered a distinctive vehicle delivering an ultra-rich experience. Costing way lesser than its key rival like Rolls-Royce Ghost– it proposes a great value-for-money package for shoppers. The Flying Spur is not just a luxury vehicle to drive, but it is also one of the fastest accelerating sedans in the market. The cabin of this Bently emerges as doing high-tech things while maintaining the minimalism in blood. From the steering column to, extremely comfortable front and second-row seats to, a multi-function convertible dashboard– it is a car to drive after paying a six-digit starting price.

The Bentley Flying Spur will be contesting against the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Buying Advice

CARHP recommends customers buy the Bently Flying Spur with a W12 powertrain. It avails numerous options as standard as well as additional ones like – 21 or 22 inches wheels, 16 and 19 speakers audio system, and much more. Costing an extra $30000 is not that much if you are buying this sedan by paying a six-figure amount. Though the W12 does not deliver a phenomenal leap in power and performance figures, with an extra 80hp it helps to do a quarter-mile faster. Shoppers can choose from various trims like Cool Harmony, Steer Noir, or Alter Ego.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For the 2023 generation of this beauty, the Bentley has introduced a new S trim. This will be styled in the all-black exterior shade with 22-inch alloy wheels and more appealing bright red brake calipers. The interior will comprise a dual-tone polish furnished with sports-oriented leather-suited seats. It is accessible in the hybrid V6 or Porsche-sourced turbocharged V8 engine. The rest of the versions will be fetching a standard V8 as usual and a W12 powertrain – to delegate a furious acceleration. The Bentley Flying Spur will be contesting against the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Features
8.0/10

This sedan of the Bently lineup only has a single trim but is available in two different engine powertrains– a V8 engine, and a W12. The standard trim with a V8 engine proposes 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment. It contains air suspensions, and all the models are based on an all-wheel-drive (AWD) configuration as standard.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Bentley brings the Flying Spur with two engine powertrains– the standard one is the V8 sourced from the Porsche, and the remaining is Bentley's signature W12. Though the Spur is not a performance sedan, it is one of the quickest luxury sedans out there. Both versions pair with a standard 8-speed auto-shift manual transmission and an AWD architecture. The V8-powered model completes a 0-60 mph run in just 3.5 seconds. The W12 engine is slightly furious in satisfying the 100 mph and through quarter-mile run. The V8 delivers a combined mileage of 17 mpg (15 in the city and 20 on the highways).

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is the richest kid in the school of luxury sedans. With the highest price tag, it serves a huge V12 engine that generates the highest power and amount of torque at least rpm. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the most affordable luxury sedan on the market. The Bentley Flying Spur is the fastest sedan in the comparison. The Maybach is a bit faster than the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

2023 Bentley Flying Spur Ride and Handling

The ride quality of the new Flying Spur is as smooth as you’d expect from a flagship luxury sedan. With extremely comfortable seats, it easily absorbs the speed bumps and is easy to maneuver. The steering column finished in high-quality Alcantara provides a good grip and feels planted and responsive. Despite being a heavy car, it does feel quite flat while turning on the road. The AWD system helps propel the car out of the bends with ease. It is not a sports car, but it does impress the driver on the twisty roads. It gets four different drive modes - the comfort, the Sports, the B for Bently which offers a nice balance of Comfort and Sports, and the Custom. The Comfort mode delegates a smoother experience. The Sports mode is just nuts. The car gets an air suspension as standard that can raise or lower the ride height of the vehicle. Active stabilizer bars and adaptive suspension dampers automatically adjust to improve handling or ride comfort. The sedan has a turning diameter of 36.3 ft. It gets Double wishbone suspension for the front and Multi-link for the rear wheels.

2023 Bentley Flying Spur Braking System

With huge brake calipers for the front and rear wheels, the sedan comes standard with an anti-lock braking system. Along with that, the Emergency barking Assists system – detects an emergency stop by analyzing the speed and force of the brake pedal, and if the pedal is not fully applied, it overrides the brakes and fully applies them until the anti-lock braking system (ABS) takes over to prevent the wheels from locking. The standard rear-wheel steering when the steering wheel is turned actuates the rear wheels' angles and either turns them in pair with the front wheels or in the opposite direction to better increase a vehicle's low- or high-speed agility.

The all-new Rolls-Royce Ghost is the heaviest sedan in the comparison. It has also got the biggest brake calipers that result in coming to a standstill faster than the Bentley Flying Spur. The 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the lightest car among the three, but it is offered with shorter brake rotors than the Flying Spur. An educated guess concludes that the new S-Class would be having shorter braking distance than the Ghost and the Flying Spur.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

This luxury sedan is not there to save your money from spending on fuel. The mileage figures of the Bentley Flying Spur resemble the economy of pickup trucks. With a standard twin-turbo V8 engine the car generates mileage of – 15 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. With a fuel capacity of 23.8 gallons, it manages the range figures like – 357 miles when roaming around the city, 476 miles when sprinting on the highways, and 404.6 miles on a combined basis.

The assertive W12 engine delegates more power, but sucks more fuel in exchange. It serves a combined mileage of 15 mpg ( 12 in the city and 19 on the highways). The range figures are – 285.6 miles, 452.2 miles, and 372 miles in city, highway, and on a combined basis respectively.

The newest Rolls-Royce Ghost is one of the most luxurious cars that deliver miserable fuel economy. On the highways, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the car with the highest mileage figure, but it has the lowest fuel carrying capacity. The 2023 Flying spur has the biggest fuel tank and that's why with competitive mpg figures in the segment– it ensures the best range in the city and on a combined basis. While running on the highways, the Rolls-Royce Ghost and the Bentley Flying Spur provide almost the same mpg figures.

Interior
8.5/10

The interior of the Bently Flying Spur is supremely spacious and carries a minimalistic design appeal with it. The doors are pretty large for going in and out of the car. The cabin proposes 15 different interior color options to choose from. The doors are fantastic looking and engage a diamond-shaped styling, different wood veneers to choose from, and various controls of the seat adjustments surrounded with chrome panels. The diamond quilted high-quality leather seats offer heating, massaging, and ventilation functions for front and rear seated passengers as standard–very supportive to go on long drives. However, you can have the optional rear seat infotainment screens to control things from the back. The dashboard is very minimal, but is composed of real wood veneers– even that can be customized. The dashboard also serves a rotating function, where the infotainment touchscreen easily merges in it– but costs you extra. Bentley uses physical buttons for the controls instead of operating them from the touchscreen. The controls inside it are finished with chrome elements and are within reach.

On the downside, the shiny piano black finish can be a little annoying as it reflects sunlight. The three-spoke steering column looks great. It also has an option for a dual-tone finish. It is grippy and feels planted. The interior is super silent. The road noise doesn't enter the cabin– thanks to insulation, while the engine noise is negligible. It has acres of space for the passengers but lacks when it's a matter of cargo space– rivals have more cargo capacity.

There is no doubt that the new Rolls-Royce Ghost has the most spacious interior. Furthermore, it has the largest cargo compartment. The interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class has more legroom in the second row than the Flying Spur. Unlike the Maybach S-Class, the Flying Spur also maintains a simple yet appealing approach. The infotainment screen on the Mercedes is vertically mounted whereas the remaining two have horizontal, well integrated into the dashboard. The Flying Spur has more carrying capacity than the Mercedes.

Highlights of the interior features of the Bentley Flying Spur include–

  • Power adjustable front and rear heated, ventilated, and massaging seats
  • Heated armrests
  • Power tilt and telescopic steering column
  • Power rear windows with power sunblind
  • Front cupholder
  • Rear cupholders
  • Soft closing doors
  • Proximity key for doors and push button start
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Dual-zone front and rear air conditioning
  • Illuminated locking glove box

  • Optional lamb wool carpet covering
  • Cargo space lights
  • 2 seatback storage pocket
  • Optional rear seat entertainment
  • Front and rear center armrest
  • Power anti-whiplash front and rear head restraints

How Intuitive is the Bentley Flying Spur's Infotainment System?

The infotainment system brings tons of driver-assistive features as an option. The bright and attentive 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is integrated amidst the wood trim on the dash and supports Apple CarPlay, but lacks Android Auto connectivity. By paying a little more, shoppers can get a static screen with a moving piece that rotates into the dashboard and exposes three analog dials– a temperature gauge, a clock, and a compass. Passengers can connect with the onboard WiFi hotspot, and can charge their smartphones wirelessly with an extra amount. The standard 10-speaker audio system is decent for this silent beauty– an option to upgrade for the 16-speakers Bang and Olufson or 19-speakers Naim music system.

Highlights of the infotainment system –

  • FM Radio
  • Steering wheel control
  • Frint screen infotainment
  • Optional rear seat infotainment
  • 11-channel and 10-speaker audio system
  • Audio theft deterrent
  • 60GB internal memory
  • Radio data system
  • Multi-source rear controls
  • Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity
  • 2LCD monitors in the front
  • 1 LCD monitor for the rear seats
  • Streaming audio
  • Concealed Diversity Antenna

Exterior
9.0/10

As it is spacious from the inside, the exterior design approaches a simple look. The front fascia is finished with super shiny vertically mounted chrome strips. Underneath that, it is composed of parking sensors and air intakes for better aerodynamic efficiency. The Flying Spur catwalks with its super sharp– shark teeth-inspired headlights. The indicators themselves signify a flower-oriented intention. The Flying B mascot hides under the hood if we go to steal it. A front chrome strip on the dash connects to the Bentley logo. The side profile of this sedan looks minimal and holds up an elegant road presence. It gets 20-inch alloy wheels with a V8 powertrain, while the W12 brings along 21’ or 22’ inches alloy wheels with several designs as options. The rear portion consists of the Bentley logo that serves as a button to access the cargo area. The auto-dimming outside mirrors along with window trims contain chrome accents. Rear headlights make a Bently logo design.

Safety
9.0/10

This luxurious sedan has not received any safety ratings from the NHTSA but encompasses numerous safety features, unfortunately, many of them are optional. The standard lane departure mitigation alerts the driver if the vehicle is distracted from its predefined scanned path and applies firm steering assistance to bring it back on track. The Bentley's night vision uses a radar sensor to detect objects nearly 460 feet ahead with a horizontal range of 24 degrees.Furthermore, to keep the image clean and effective, it comes with a washer to protect it from dirt.

Ahead of that, it is provided with several safety features-

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS and driveline traction control
  • Side impact beams
  • Dual-stage driver and passenger seat-mounted airbags
  • Emergency Sos
  • Forward collision mitigation and reverse traffic warning

Competition
9.0/10

2023 Bentley Flying Spur vs. 2023 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class

Costing more than $15000 less, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class seems a better option than the Flying Spur. Though the Bentley is faster, the Maybach S-Class is the sedan with a larger wheelbase and a more roomy interior. Both the vehicles are supremely luxurious, but the standard ambient lighting on the Mercedes makes its cabin look highly futuristic. Both of these palaces on wheel offer almost identical mpg numbers but the Flying Spur has more fuel capacity. The Mercedes is lightweight. On a standard basis, the Flying Spur does not offer rear seat entertainment and a refrigerator, but the Mercedes does.

2023 Bentley Flying Spur vs. 2023 Rolls-Royce Ghost

The rivalry of ultimate flagship sedans. The Rolls-Royce Ghosts and the Bentley Flying Spur have a huge gap in their prices. On the one hand, the Flying Spur is induced with the V8 engine, while on the other hand, the Ghost frightens with the V12 engine as standard. The ride quality of the Rolls-Royce feels more polished. The cabin of the Bentley is silent, while the Rolls-Royce is considered the most silent sedan with a gasoline engine. The Ghost lies on the larger wheelbase ahead of its length. Both sedans signify their prices, but if the shopper wants to have the fun equivalent to the Rolls Royce then, the Flying Spur is for them. Also, the Bently offers a bit nicer mpg and range numbers.

Final Verdict
8.8/10

This is truly a value-for-money high-end luxury sedan. The vehicle possesses a great sense of styling and an amount of comfort in its DNA. Despite carrying such huge curb weight, it feels like a sports car and has great handling. Though there are not many options in the segment this sedan belongs to, still if shoppers want a true flagship sedan under $200k– the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the only and the best option. If the shopper is looking for an epitome of luxury and is ready to pay more than $300k– the Rolls Royce is waiting for them.
