Overview

Talking about some of the most luxurious automobile brands, Bentley is one of those handful manufacturers that is considered as a car of the rich. Back in the 1960s, the Flying Spur was an upscale 4-door trim for the shorter and highly famous Continental but today the lavish British super-saloon is sold as a completely different model.

An all-time low in sales is one of the reasons for the partition, launching a brand new, powerful, and luxury-packed large sedan along with Bentley’s updated signature styling was more than required to bring back the dead enthusiasm for such cars. Meeting all these requirements, Bentley relaunched the Flying Spur in 2005 and facelifted it twice since which has turned out to be quite a successful move considering the rapid trend shifts in the current market.

Buying Advice

The Bentley Flying Spur is a unique and sporty sedan from Bentley costing as high as an entire lineup of a regular vehicle manufacturer. In such a case, the British carmaker has planned to make this a benchmark for the luxury sedan industry and so there are no trims. However, there are loads of customization options on offer to truly personalize your Flying Spur the way you like.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Bentley Flying Spur has a refined and dynamic styling on the outside while the cabin and interiors feel out-worldly luxurious and comfortable. Being from the European automobile industry, the saloon had countless rivals back in the time but today the only competitors remain the Rolls-Royce Ghost and the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S650 which is slightly cheaper and a recent addition to the segment.

Features

Considering this confident approach towards making a car, Bentley has rushed in huge loads of luxury, comfort, and practical features that make it a classy saloon both from the inside and outside. Let us have a look at what is offered for such a price. It offers top-notch interior features, spectacular and magnificent exterior styling, next-level comfort, and whatnot.

Fuel Economy
5.7/10

The large British luxury sports saloon is the only W-configuration engine and has a highly complicated fuel intake and exhaust system that probably reduces the fuel economy. The new Flying Spur is estimated to give 12 miles to a gallon in the city while on the highway 19 miles can be covered in a mile. Besides, Bentley has equipped a 23-gallon fuel tank to compensate for the lower MPGs.

The Maybach S650 with all the weight offers a great fuel economy. On the other hand, Bentley and Rolls Royce have almost the same figures but the Flying Spurs has the biggest fuel tank and so it offers the best range. The Mercedes sure has the best MPG figures but a smaller fuel tank gives it the third-best range whereas the Ghost’s lowest MPG numbers with a comparatively smaller tank have the least range of all.

Interior
9.1/10

Being a brand new and benchmark 4-door sedan, the new Flying Spur is updated with the most beautiful and elegant interior of any of the Bentley vehicles up until now. The cabin is mostly covered in plain and textured leather along with some smooth metallic inserts maintaining the luxury-level aesthetics. The interior trim is available in three different trim layouts and has a wide range of colors to choose from. One thing assured is that there is no noisy plastic in masses to be found in the cabin.

Focusing on the dashboard, a veneer piece with a total of fifteen different wood trims is a choice for the owner and most of those metallic pieces are found detailing the dashboard and center console. Talking about it, the console lies a little lower than the 2-door counterpart of the Continental. There are premium knurled knobs, and piano black finished buttons placed very well and most of them are on the console making it easily accessible to the front occupants.

Other comforts include a heated and leather-trimmed steering wheel, four-zone climate control, heated armrests, power-operated sun blinds, and fully power-operated dual-pane sunroof as standard. There are impressive options provided like a mini-refrigerator in the rear, mood lighting, and extended diamond knurling to the clock, AC vents, and similar minor elements. Another option is to extend the center console further back to the rear row enhancing the luxury experience.

Talking about seats, the 2020 Bentley Flying Spur welcomes seating for five as standard but with the extended center console, it is reduced to four. The front seats are leather-wrapped 14-way power heated and ventilated sporty bucket seats while the rear passengers have a suede head cushion with a highly comfortable bench seat. Each seat in the Flying Spur has a five-template massaging function with five different intensities, making the cabin a divine place to be in. The seating surfaces are covered in premium quality leather and have options for contrast stitching and piping around them to add that luxury look to the seats.

The Rolls Royce destroys the others with its good front room but the best rear room. While Mercedes and BMW have dedicated some of the interior space to some practical cargo space numbers, Bentley has not utilized the space at its best as the front legroom is good but in the rear, it is even smaller than its rivals in the competition. Some of the features that are really worth mentioning are

  • Ambient Cabin Lighting
  • Leather-trimmed dashboard
  • 3-D designed leather on doors
  • 24-way power-adjustable front seats (optional)
  • Heated Rear Seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

As there has been a complete redesign inside this British luxury sedan, Bentley has equipped a beautiful 12.3-inch display in the center of the new Flying Spur’s dashboard. This screen has a high-definition display and some cool graphics in its interface. The display has a capacitive touchscreen and feels like a premium tablet mounted on the dashboard. The rear passengers get a handy touchscreen remote to control their seat heating and massaging function.

The luxury saloon from Britain also has a fully digital driver’s information display ahead of the steering wheel which has numerous customizations that can be done based on what the driver actually wants to be seen. Bentley also provides an option to have a 3-way rotating unit with the screen on one side, a classic analog dial set on the other, and the third side which has the same veneer finish to keep things plain and simple, and a rear-seat entertainment system is also available, making it a 5-screen 4-door phenomenal luxury saloon.

Other than this, the standard audio system is a 650-watt 10-speaker which has fine quality but it can be upgraded to a Bang & Olufsen 1500-watt 16-speaker system with just about perfect sound quality, and if that does not satisfy the ears then there is a 2200-watt 19-speaker Naim premium audio system with some stand-alone features specially built for this Bentley.

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible
  • Front and rear wireless charging pad
  • Satellite radio
  • Multiple USB audio and charging ports
  • 12V power outlet in console with cigarette lighter

Exterior
8.8/10

Bentley has been known for its unique and luxurious styling even on the older Flying Spurs’. Just like Porsche, Bentley has also applied their signature design to all of its models. Closely inspired by the Continental’s modern and sleek looks which were later applied to the Bentayga, the British manufacturer just picked the right time to share the same looks on the new Flying Spur as well and it looks simply gorgeous from every angle. By the looks, it would be tough to believe that this humongous sedan is partially made by hand.

To start with, there is a chrome grille in the front with vertical slats as standard whereas a matrix grille behind these salts is optional on the Flying Spur. Focusing down on the front bumper which is a nice one-piece highlighted with black texturing surrounded by chrome which brings that grand and royal look to the fastest saloon. Bentley retains its classic 1960s circular full-matrix LED headlight design and has an elegant lotus-like design added to it, however, as soon as the DRLs glow they look pretty aggressive, matching the sporty nature of this luxury sedan.

Looking at the Flying Spur from the side reveals its smooth roofline and body works as the side character line fades out just after the first door and is continued from between the rear wheel arches and wheel well. The rear door is crafted in a manner that it curves into the rear wheel well and there are chrome inserts for the lower door and window surrounds to match the amount of material used in the front. Other than that, a set of 10-spoke 21-inch wheels are available in three different finishes while the size can be increased to a 22-inch wheel with Mulliner driving specification and has four different finishes to choose from.

The rear has not been changed much and just a mild tweak to the boot and C-pillars have made the styling pretty dynamic. Though the taillight housing might look carried over from its predecessor, it is slightly bigger and carries a completely new set of lights. Moving to the bottom, chrome inserts are continued on the bumper as well as the exhausts are surrounded by it. That is not all of it as a full-glass roof is also a part that completes this perfectly covered top-class luxury sedan. Looking highly luxurious with all that chrome surrounds as standard, a blackline specification can be opted for which replaces those pieces with a sporty black finished metal making the car look really cool and sporty.

The Bentley flying spur is the most compact large sedan. In fact, the Flying spur has the shortest wheelbase which explains its performance. However, the Bentley is more prone to be stuck in traffic as it is the widest in the segment. The Maybach is the longest and lowest of all with a suitable wheelbase whereas the Ghost is the tallest luxury sedan riding the farthest from the ground.

Safety
9.0/10

This ultra-luxury sedan from Britain has been built strong and hefty so that it does not have much of an impact on the inside as much as on the outside. Based on a completely new platform, Bentley has considered all the areas that can be easily damaged and constructed a highly rigid structure to give it the strength and resistance to withstand the strongest of crashes.

You get all the passive safety features ranging from a cabin filled with airbags to most of the modern electromechanical systems like ABS, EBD, and some modern safety gimmicks. Moreover, traffic-sign recognition along with a top view camera is standard whereas adaptive cruise control is offered as an option and it has the capability to self-drive once the distance and cruising speed is set, however, it requires full human attention and intervention. List of safety features:

  • Traffic sign-recognition
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Lane departure mitigation
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Automated parking system
  • Night-vision function

Competition
8.0/10

2020 Bentley Flying Spur vs. 2020 Rolls Royce Ghost

Now the Ghost is everything luxurious but lacks sport, unlike Bentley which is a master of both worlds. The Rolls-Royce is a perfect chauffeur-driven sedan whereas the Flying Spur is the best to have some hands-on experience on the world’s fastest British saloon ever built. Also, the Bentley is better at performance than the Rolls Royce.

On the other hand, the Rolls Royce costs a lot more than the Flying Spur but offers different trims, each of them having a unique exterior and interior design, unlike the Flying Spur which is a more one-off sort of sedan. While there is no match to the amount of opulence and comfort provided in the Ghost, the Flying Spur has a huge variety of personalization that can be done everywhere on the inside. Moreover, the Bentley is more practical, fuel-efficient, and a little compact as well.

2020 Bentley Flying Spur vs. 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650

Another full-German amalgamation is from Mercedes-Benz Maybach and its fully luxury equipped S-class. There is no way that the Maybach S650 would defeat the W12-powered Bentley in terms of performance or efficiency but the German automaker has worked upon the interiors and has brought in a solid and opulent cabin that can actually give a tough fight to the Flying Spur.

However, the British luxury sedan has more customization whereas the Maybach S650 will only be equally opulent once it gets a few packages that would make it cost more than the Flying Spur. The S-class is a little more utilitarian but is the longest luxury sedan and provides less room when compared to the Bentley. Being a Mercedes, there are standard driver-assistance and active safety features which the British sedan misses upon.

Final Verdict

The new Bentley Flying Spur is arguably the fastest, most luxurious, and cost-effective option in the current market. Its uniqueness is the fine mixture of these three factors making a perfect modern-day saloon with it. While the British manufacturer has stuck to its historic design principles, there have been some mind-blowing modern additions, especially on the inside.

If you could afford it, the 2020 Bentley Flying Spur is a perfectly grand British saloon that will suit you the best with plenty of customizable options, will zoom past all your rivals, and display royalty, success, and treat to every eye that sees it.
