Overview

The 2020 Chrysler 300 continues to sell in four trims and has a starting MSRP of $30.040. The 3.6L V6 is the standard powerhouse in the 300 that produces 292 hp and 260 lb-ft. of torque. A 363-hp V8 is also available on the 300 S and Limited trims. Both engines are punchy and responsive enough to always keep you on your toes. With the latter engine, you can do 0-60 in just 5.3 seconds.

Premium materials adorn the cabin of the 300. The cabin is also spacious, practical and has an outstanding infotainment system. The 300 also earned decent safety ratings but comes with very limited standard safety features. In the full-size sedan segment, the 300 competes against the Toyota Avalon, the Nissan Maxima, and the Dodge Charger

Buying Advice

The Chrysler 300 lineup is evenly spread with different creature comforts. We advise you to go for the Limited trim as is it available with the optional SafetyTecPlus Group package that includes bundles of top driver-assist features. This safety package is also available in the 300S trim but this trim suffers from harsh ride quality due to a stiffer suspension. This trim adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, memory settings for the driver's seat, a power-adjustable heated steering wheel, and power-folding exterior mirrors.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

An old-school aura surrounds every aspect of the vehicle- MotorTrend

The Chrysler 300 has managed to stay afloat in the market for more than ten years now. Now, at a time where cars are phased out due to poor sales figures, it remains to be seen as to how the Chrysler fares. Performance-wise, this hunk is pretty capable and as for the interior, a plush well-padded setup has always been the 300's USP.

You may not believe this but the Chrysler 300's ownership costs are cheaper than the Nissan Maxima. That's because the Maxima depreciates its value quickly over a period of five years. On the flip side, the 300 has strong reliability and good resale values. The estimated figure is $8,200 per year for various parameters such as fuel, maintenance, repair, etc.

Features
8.0/10

There are several options packages unique to a specific trim. Some packages have overlapping features- Autotrader

The Chrysler 300 is available in the market in the form of four trims- Touring, Touring L, 300 S, and Limited. Pricing for the 300 begins from $30,040 for the Touring trim. With an expansive feature list, the price tag might reach north of $50,000, excluding the destination fee of $1,495. Regardless of trims, both RWD and AWD configurations are available.

Chrysler also offers a number of additional packages to customize your purchase. The Red S Appearance package is new for this year and is exclusive to the 300 S trim. This package includes unique red Nappa leather sport seats. The Value package for the Touring L trim adds a panoramic sunroof, LED fog lights, navigation system, and remote start for $3,295.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

Order up the Hemi 5.7-liter V-8, and this four-door is quite the gas consumer- CarAndDriver

The age of the Chrysler 300 reflects on its fuel economy which is not that great but it's not bad either. It returns 19 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on a highway, and 23 MPG combined. The fuel estimates of the Chrysler 300 are decent in the large sedan segment. It's worth mentioning that the fuel economy does take a plunge with the AWD option.

Opting for the optional V8 reduces fuel economy to 16 MPG in the city 25 MPG on a highway and that equates to a combined mileage of 19 MPG. Thanks to the 18.5-gallon fuel tank, the 300 can travel up to 425 miles in combined form when the fuel tank is at its full capacity. Comparatively, it has the best driving range in the segment.

The Toyota Avalon has the best fuel estimates in this competition without a doubt thanks to its efficient engine. The CVT transmission in the Nissan Maxima aids for better fuel efficiency than the Chrysler 300. The fuel ratings of the Dodge Charger are equal to 300 as both house the same engine.

Interior
7.3/10

Assembly appears tight and finished, with good cabin materials and attention to panel gaps- Edmunds

The Chrysler 300 has an elegant and refined interior. As you move up to the range, everything gets nicer. Only the base Touring trim gets cloth upholstery while the rest of the lineup enjoys Nappa leather upholstery. But, a leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard in every trim. The power steering wheel also gets wood accents with heated functionality only on the Limited trim. The front seat comfort is excellent with plenty of space for tall passengers.

An 8-way power driver's seat is standard but a power passenger's seat is available on higher trims. Moreover, the heated and ventilated front seats are also available. One of the perks of buying a full-size sedan is that when they say it seats five, they mean it. The back seat easily accommodates three adults and heated rear seats are standard only on the Limited trim. There's plenty of head and legroom at the back but rear visibility is blocked by thick roof pillars.

Chrysler 300's Uconnect 4C infotainment system is one of the best in the business right now. It features a standard 8.4- inch touchscreen display that comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interface reacts quickly to the user's inputs and the screen has high-quality graphics. You won't find trouble getting the right setting as the menus are logically laid. Audiophiles, ignore the standard 6 speakers and upgrade to the 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system.

Pop the trunk and you will see 16.3 cu-ft. of cargo space. That's enough space for groceries and a couple of luggage bags for a weekend getaway. The rear seats can be folded to store longer items. It does take some effort to lift heavier cargo due to its high liftover height. However, the 300's trunk is big with a wide opening that makes loading bulky stuff easy. Some cool interior bits are mentioned below:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather, heated steering wheel
  • 8-way power front heated, ventilated seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Cloth & Nappa leather upholstery
  • Ambient lighting
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Push-button start

Exterior
7.3/10

With its hard lines, small greenhouse and wide stance, Chrysler’s 2020 300 defines the look of American luxury sedans- Kelly Blue Book

The Chrysler 300's styling is quite exaggerated and bold. The large front grille is flanked by two rectangular LED headlamps. This design scheme of the 300 has remained the same for more than a decade. The front fenders have been raised to meet the low hood. The wheel options of the 300 include 17, 18, and 20-inch alloy wheels. These wheels keep the car 4.8 inches from the ground, which is quite low. Therefore, egress and ingress is an easier task. Also, the wide wheelbase speaks for a spacious interior.

From the side view, the lightly contoured exterior door panels and high windowsills give a taller profile to the car. The bold lines and a long body makes the Chrysler 300 look more like a muscle car, but at the same time, it has retained its sedan vibe. The roofline of the 300 can be best described as unconventional. That strong line bends on the roof makes the 300 stand out from its peers. At the rear, the 300 retains those sharp lines drops pretty aggressively too that makes the rear of the car something to look forward to.

The Toyota Avalon has a high ground clearance, which is helpful at times to protect the underbelly of the car from high bumps. Even the Nissan Maxima has the same ground clearance but its wheelbase is the shortest here. This leads to a cramped rear row.  Except for its ground clearance and curb weight, the other exterior dimensions of the Dodge Charger are the same as the 300. Some exterior highlights are give below:

  • LED headlamps
  • LED front lamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • 17, 18 & 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Black grille with chrome surround
  • Chrome headlamp bezel

Safety
8.5/10

Spotty performance in its crash testing is cause for concern- CarAndDriver

The Chrysler 300 scored above-average safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS. It received four out of five stars from NHTSA. In the IIHS crash test, it received a 'Good' rating in four crash tests and a 'Marginal' rating for the driver's side crash test. The headlights were rated 'Poor' but the top-most 'Superior' rating was given for the front crash prevention.

A suite of seven airbags is available in the Chrysler 300. A rearview camera is the only standard driver-assist feature available in this sedan but higher trims add more features. There is an optional package called SafetyTecPlus Group that adds top driver aids to the list. The list of safety features available are given below:

  • Rearview camera
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Chrysler 300 vs 2020 Dodge Charger

Both the sedans are built on the same platform but still, they are different in so many ways. The Dodge Charger also offers the beastly 707-hp V8 and agile handling. But, its interiors look a bit dull and also offer fewer standard features. Although the ownership costs of both sedans are the same, the Charger's liability ratings are really good. Safety-wise, both sedans scored similar ratings.

2020 Chrysler 300 vs 2020 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is slightly expensive than the Maxima. It also outruns the Chrysler 300 with more standard driver-assist features and comfort features. In different aspects, 300 is a better option. Its interior is more spacious and trunk volume is also better. The Chrysler 300 is also available with a V8 while the Maxima comes with only a V6. Overall, the 300 is a better pick.

2020 Chrysler 300 vs 2020 Toyota Avalon

The Toyota Avalon is the most expensive car in this competition. It is fairly agile but the available V8 in the Chrysler 300 is too powerful. The main highlight of the Avalon is the best fuel efficiency and top reliability ratings. On the inside, the Avalon is spacious as 300 and the interior quality is good too. Another area where the Avalon beats the Chrysler 300 is safety as it offers a long list of safety features.

Final Verdict

In the full-sized sedan market, if you plan to buy one, the 2020 Chrysler 300 will surely not disappoint you. The V6 is refined and efficient and that goes a long way to make this a perfect car. It's a big sedan, with a lot of space at your disposal. The feature list is adequate when matched with the price but the interior still reeks of those tacky plastic parts that might irk some, but overall, this car is an all-rounder.
