It is pretty evident that the Mitsubishi Outlander isn’t the most preferred compact SUV and the major reason for it is its cumbersome drive and the underpowered engine. The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander hasn’t changed a lot but gets a major cosmetic upgrade. The Outlander doesn’t pool in the highest sales figure compared to the cars like the 2020 Honda CR-V, the 2020 Toyota RAV4, and the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox but the Outlander holds great safety ratings and has been reported to have only 7 complaints and a single recall for the whole year.
User complaints and problems
Electrical Problems
- Warning lights – A report stated that the Outlander started displaying multiple warnings on the instrument cluster and wouldn’t let the car accelerate past 20MPH. The acceleration issue was resolved after restarting the car but the lights stayed on.
- Reverse camera – The camera fails to engage at times after shifting the gear position to reverse.
- Audio system – It was noticed by a few customers that the system would switch between the radio and Apple Car Play automatically.
Mechanical Problems
- Transmission – An Outlander started producing knocking sounds at 70 MPH with the transmission warning flashing with just 5,500 miles on the meter.
- Brakes – The forward collision light was displayed when no car was ahead and the Outlander started braking aggressively on its own.
Safety Problems
- Airbags - There have been multiple instances where the airbags did not deploy during a crash. The car rammed into a tree leading the dashboard to crack but since the airbags failed to deploy, the occupant suffered a head injury.
Exterior Problems
- Sunroof – The owner was driving while the sunroof shattered without any contact or prior damage.

Incorrectly assembled rear seatbelt assembly |
The rear row seatbelt may have been assembled the wrong way which may not restrain the occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. |
Owners would be notified and the dealers would inspect the rear right side seatbelt and replace it if necessary. |
Should you buy the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander?
There isn’t any major reason for us to not recommend the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander as this car is safe with just a single recall and a 5-star overall safety rating. Performance might not be the strong link for the Outlander but as far as a reliable family SUV goes, this car is worth considering. In terms of the registered complaints and recalls, the Mitsubishi stands ahead of its competition but we would recommend checking if rear seatbelts need to be replaced before buying one.
