Overview

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 is here to make your mundane drives more exciting and thrilling. It was made with just one purpose in mind and that was the AMG G 63 must conquer every terrain on earth and it actually succeeds at that. You throw any challenge on it and it will emerge victoriously. It can be mile-muncher on the highways or can be seen trailing rock mountains on weekend getaways.

Buying Advice

Unfortunately, there is only one trim option on offer. It offers all the bells and whistles that you might expect from an SUV of its caliber and class. The AMG G 63 offers top-notch creature comforts, safety features, and its performance truly defies many laws of physics. If you don’t mind paying for the super exclusive sticker price, you can rest assured that you’ll not miss any desired features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2021 AMG G63 is equipped with a powerful 4.0 L Bi-turbo V8 engine which powers all the wheels to conquer any terrain. When the engine is paired with an advanced suite of electronic aids and driver assistance features, the resulting amalgamation is surely overwhelming. However everything great comes at a price and with a sticker price of $156,450 excluding additional charges, the AMG G 63 is for the one with deep pockets.

Features
7.0/10

The 2021 AMG G 63 is available in only one trim version. We would have liked different trim options to cater to different sections of the buyers. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 is the only trim and is fully locked and loaded to accept any challenge you throw at it.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

It is a universally known fact that the higher the weight, the more fuel you’ll need to move it. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 is bulkier than its competition and hence its fuel economy is quite low. Also, the availability of AWD as a standard makes it more fuel-thirsty to drive all four wheels.

The Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 provides a combined fuel economy of just 14 mpg which is less, but because of its curb weight, it can be considered to be acceptable. However, the fuel tank capacity is decent so you don't have to worry about range. It’s not class-leading but definitely not something to worry about. The Autobiography SV provides a stellar range of 440 miles in mixed driving conditions owing to a larger fuel tank and better efficiency.

Interior
9.9/10

The cabin of the AMG G 63 is one of the comfiest and luxurious places to be in. It is a combination of old-gen classic elegance and modern tech amenities. The features like Nappa leather upholstery, heated front, and rear seats, power front seats with memory, a Tri-zone climate control system, Auto-dimming rear view, and driver-side mirrors make it stand out among the competition. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display provides all the necessary information to the driver in real-time.

All the taller drivers and passengers will be happy to be in a cabin where there is enough headroom and legroom for them, all thanks to a boxy profile. The seats are comfy and offer good support for wider body types too. However, the rear liftgate is manual and we think Mercedes should have provided a powered one at least as an option.

The 2021 AMG G 63 offers the maximum cargo capacity. The 60/40 rear folding seats can be folded down to increase the cargo capacity to 69 cu-ft. It also comes with better headroom and legroom across both rows, all courtesy of the boxy profile. The Bentayga offers the least cargo capacity. The performance-oriented Lamborghini Urus fares much better with 21.8 cu-ft which is commendable for an SUV of its nature. The Autobiography SV offers a seating capacity of just 4 people and comes with a cubic capacity of 24.5 cu-ft which is quite desirable. Some of the standout interior features of the AMG G 63 are:

  • 3-zone climate control
  • 64-color LED ambient lighting
  • Three power outlets ( two 12 V and one 115 V)
  • Garage door opener
  • Privacy Glass
  • Electrically heated windshield
  • Heat and Noise insulating glass
  • Stainless steel running boards

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2021 AMG G 63?

The 2021 AMG G63 has a lot to offer in terms of infotainment features. It comes with a 12.3-inch high-resolution touchscreen display as standard. As expected it is crisp and highly responsive. It offers a COMAND system with a touchpad controller for more intuitive access to the world of entertainment, navigation, and convenience. We got to know that Germany's Burmester brand has developed a surround-sound system that's specifically tailored to the G-Class. With 15 high-quality speakers and a 590-watt amplifier, you can expect a crystal clear and satiating musical experience.

The connectivity features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard for connecting your smartphone to your car’s multimedia system. You also get an optional Wi-Fi feature for better connectivity to the web. The Innovative Touch Controls elevate the multifunction steering wheel to an unparalleled level of user-friendliness and are easy to use. Mercedes has also promised a No-charge online navigation map update for 3 years which is a good thing. Some of the standout features of the infotainment system are:

  • 12.3 Inch Touchscreen Display
  • COMAND Navigation
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Burmester Music System
  • SiriusXM access free for 6 months
  • SD card reader

Exterior
7.0/10

The 2021 AMG G 63 comes with a no-nonsense design approach. It’s designed with a specific purpose in mind and does not try to look fancy. It has an old-school charm to it with a boxy profile and round LED Headlamps. However, the profile takes a hit on the aerodynamic efficiency of the SUV and promotes more interior space. The front fascia comes with a chrome grille that embodies the 3-star logo in the center.

The sides are departed from any visual drama and are nothing exciting to talk about. The rear profile offers a spare wheel on the liftgate and it is manual in nature. The 20- inch AMG ten-spoke alloy wheels offer some bling to the overall minimalistic design. The Mercedes-Benz G 63 is made to perform well on-road and better on off-road, hence aesthetics take a back seat and practicality is a top priority in its design.

The 2021 AMG G 63 offers the maximum ground clearance of the lot and that affirms its off-road ability. It is also considerably taller than rivals, offering better headroom. It is on the heavier side which depletes its fuel economy to some extent. The Urus offers the least ground clearance and definitely not much off-road worthy. It's more of a performance SUV on road, not off-road. The Autobiography comes with a set of more balanced dimensions. Some of the standout exterior features of the G 63 are:

  • G- Manufaktur Paint options
  • AMG matt-silver brush guard
  • 20-inch AMG Spoke Alloy wheel
  • LED Headlamps and Taillamps
  • Steep Approach and Departure angles
  • Trailer Hitch

Safety
7.0/10

The 2021 AMG G 63 comes with a lot of safety features to ensure occupant safety and the good thing is that most of them are offered as standard. The advanced features like Pre-safe and Pre-Safe Sound is a predictive safety tool to protect the occupants well in advance in a crash scenario. The 10 Airbag system envelopes the occupants from all sides in case of a crash. Such predictive systems are rarely seen in the market. Some other safety features available in the 2021 AMG G 63 are:

  • Active Brake Assist
  • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Surround View System
  • Trailer Stability Assist
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist

Competition
9.0/10

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 V/S 2021 Lamborghini Urus

The Urus was Lamborghini’s first attempt at the performance SUV segment and yes it succeeded quite well in the market. It’s high on performance and style but lacks the off-road ability and the ruggedness of the AMG G 63. The Urus is also priced quite higher and might be the most expensive offering in the SUV segment.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 V/S 2021 Bentley Bentayga

The Bentayga was also the first attempt from the house of Bentley in the luxury SUV segment. The Bentley Bentayga is more focused on luxury and styling and lacks the off-road character and performance that the G 63 can offer. It is also more expensive than the G 63 and promises to offer the finest handcrafted details in the interior and a refined driving experience, previously unheard for an SUV.

2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG G 63 V/S Range Rover Autobiography SV

The Range Rover Autobiography SV holds the Land Rover DNA and can challenge the G 63 to some extent in terms of off-road worthiness. However, it is more focused on comfort and luxury, instead of head-on adventure madness like the G 63. It claims to offer an exclusive SUV experience at an even more exclusive price. The dynamics and refinement as a total package are quite better than the G 63.

Final Verdict

The AMG G 63 is Mercedes-Benz’s answer to the world that performance and ruggedness can go hand in hand. Its off-road versatility and practicality are second to none in the SUV segment. The interiors are comfy and appealing. However, it lacks the level of refinement in terms of sheer luxury and detailing at which the competitors excel quite well. It is for the one who wants to own a Mercedes-Benz but doesn't wanna miss out on off-roading madness that the G 63 can surely offer.
