My 2005 Tribute died in May 2022. I'm a Mazda loyalist and thought nothing of buying a CX5. Loved my tribute HATE the CX5 -everything from the engine size and drive compared to my V6 to the fact there is no CD player. Hate almost everything about this car - drive, interior and exterior looks, features, engine, headlights, smell, etc.Read More

Belonging to a lineage of Japanese vehicles, the Mazda CX-5 is a dependable superstar. It adheres to the brand’s values of reliability and despite being in a similar generation since 2017 MY, the SUV continues with the best-in-class safety ratings. It is revered for its user-friendly nature and at $25,000, the CX-5 is adequately luxurious and potently equipped. It falls in a similar ballpark as the Honda HR-V, the Subaru Forester, and the Hyundai Tucson. But over its competitors, Mazda stands at an advantage with its mechanical and cosmetic upgrades with the latest iteration.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has already registered itself as a high-sales volume product. It has been sold close to 30,000 units in the past couple of months, which is a commendable feat even for the segment it falls in. Yet, the CX-5’s performance can be aptly quantified by its reliability only, where it scores 81 points in the J.D. Power tests. While its initial iterations have been troublesome, the latest model years of the SUV have had minimal complaints. So, taking into consideration that the CX-5’s build quality and performance have been first-grade, let’s find out if 2022 MY can replicate a similar set of ideas.

2022 Mazda CX-5 User Complaints and Problems

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has had no complaints registered to its name as of the date we write this article. But since the SUV is still a part of the generation launched as 2017 MY, it is imperative to understand the problems that have irked the buyers. Listed below are the most common complaints about the CX-5 SUV and their implications on the ownership experience.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Stalling of the engine: The Mazda CX-5 engine reliability has remained in the dark. In the initial models of the current generation, buyers have reported the vehicle to lose its power without any symptoms. While no mechanical cause can be attributed to the problem, in some cases, an error in the software of the power control module has been determined as the underlying problem. To deal with the issue, Mazda has initiated a recall, referenced by NHTSA ID 19V497000, which entails a software update.
  • Improper functioning of the braking system: In 2017 MY, buyers of the Mazda CX-5 have reported the brake calipers to deliver substandard performances, due to excessive wear and tear. As a result, the vehicle vibrates excessively when the driver tries to bring the vehicle to a halt.
  • Inadequate engine oil: The 2021 Mazda CX-5 issues might seem limited, yet the SUV has been plagued by the problem of low engine oil levels. Without any leak, buyers have reported the engine oil to fall below-recommended levels, which causes the vehicle to lose its power. While there is no such complaint listed in 2022 MY, no solution has been provided to the aggrieved buyers.

Electric System Complaints

  • Malfunctioning infotainment system: The Mazda CX-5 infotainment issues make for the most recurring concerns. Across all of its iterations, buyers have reported the infotainment system to function erratically. Complainants have recorded a “ghost touch”, wherein the commands have been processed without any inputs from the user. As a result, buyers lose control over basic infotainment functionalities, including Apple CarPlay.

Structural Complaints

  • Chipping of exterior paint: The CX-5 paint issues are a common recurrence across all model years of the SUV. Buyers have complained about the exterior paint chipping from the hood. While no such complaint has been made in 2022 MY, the problem is prevalent with the optional red paint.

The Mazda CX-5’s problems are neither concerning nor widespread. Even the other Japanese contenders, including Honda and Subaru, deliver a similar level of performance. However, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson lurks at the bottom of the table and has already had 22 complaints registered to its name.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Recalls

The common issues with Mazda CX-5 have been easily resolved by the brand with the recalls. Yet, the SUV has not been called back extensively by the brand. Ever since the introduction of 2020 MY, the CX-5 has had no recalls listed to its name. However, to make an informed buying decision, buyers need to know about the recalls that have been started by the brand. Listed below are all the recalls that Mazda has introduced on its compact SUV and the remedies that have been provided to the buyers.

The Mazda CX-5’s recalls are restricted as compared to its rivals. However, as was the case with the complaints, the Japanese contenders prove to be the best option in the segment. While the 2022 Honda HR-V and the 2022 Subaru Forester have not yet been called back, Hyundai’s compact SUV has one recall to its name. This recall is concerned with the improper functioning of the head and taillights and has affected 12 units of the SUV.

Which Mazda CX-5 model year should you avoid?

In the current generation, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is the one to avoid. While its recall list is limited to only one entry, its complaints seem boundless. The SUV has 70 registered complaints, which is more than any other model year. However, if you aim at opting for the previous generation of the SUV, the 2016 Mazda CX-5, which has 400 complaints and 5 recalls is the iteration buyers should stay wary of.

Should you buy a used Mazda CX-5?

Definitely! The Mazda CX-5 is an affordable option and in the used car market it becomes even more accessible. However, irrespective of its price, the SUV deserves to be lauded. It proves to be the apt family hauler with ample space at its disposal and is packed to the hilt with class-leading features, which makes it rather engaging. Additionally, it proves its worth as a dependable proposition and though the latest iteration has not yet been safety tested, we believe in the capabilities of the SUV.
