Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a perfect example of a capable SUV that can take you in any weather with comfort and luxury. It is not among the most all-terrain capable SUVs in the Land Rover lineup, but it was never meant to do so. The Range Rover Sport is an urban SUV that is more of a style statement and a luxurious way to drive on the roads without any limitations. The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport remains pretty much the same as the previous model year.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the base HSE trim level of the 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. It comes with a pretty impressive list of standard features and the engine is also powerful enough to pull the car without much effort. You can add the optional Luxury package to the HSE trim that adds features like 20-inch wheels, premium leather upholstery, additional driver seat adjustments, a cooler box, a heated windshield, heated washer jets, and heated front and rear seats.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Range Rover Sport is not the most athletic SUV in its class to drive. It is rather a comfortable SUV to cruise on highways with utmost comfort. Being a Range Rover, the off-road capabilities come without saying and it comes standard with full-time four-wheel drive. It can not go in extreme off-road conditions like some of the other offerings that wear the same badge but driving it cross country should not be an issue, as it can tackle most surfaces effortlessly. The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport competes against the likes of the Audi Q7, the BMW X5, and the Porsche Cayenne

Features
8.0/10

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is offered mainly in two trim levels HSE and Supercharged. The price of the SUV starts at $59,645 and the top trim costs $74,545 without any optional extras. The base HSE trim comes standard with 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, adjustable air suspension, keyless entry/ignition, front and rear parking sensors, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. There are various packages available to replace and upgrade the standard features on offer with the base trim level. You can also upgrade to the Supercharged trim level if you want even better performance and extra features.

We recommend

We recommend going for the base HSE trim level of the 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. It comes with a pretty impressive list of standard features and the engine is also powerful enough to pull the car without much effort. Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5-liter V8 engine that comes standard with the HSE trim level and is good for 375hp and an equal amount of torque. On the other hand, the Supercharged trim level uses a supercharged version of the same engine that produces 510 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines come mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Range Rover Sport also comes equipped with a standard all-time Four-wheel drive system. It gives the SUV power to tackle any terrain with ease which you expect when you see a Range Rover badge on your vehicle.

The Range Rover Sport is a heavy SUV and it requires some effort to pull this heavy vehicle on the road. The acceleration timings will not impress you but even the base engine manages to pull the SUV effortlessly. The SUV takes 7.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph, which is acceptable for its size and capabilities. If you want even better performance, you always have to option to go for the 510 hp Supercharged trim level. However, the handling of the Range Rover Sport is not great either, and there is a significant amount of body roll on turns. It is a great SUV for comfortable cruising with your family.

The Audi Q7, which happens to be the cheapest SUV in the class, is also the slowest of them all. It is followed by the Porsche Cayenne, which shares the same engine as the Q7, but with a little higher power output. The Cayenne is available with more powerful engine options that make it one of the fastest SUVs in the class, clocking 6.8 seconds to the 60mph mark. The driving dynamics of the Cayenne are also better than any of the other rivals followed by the Bimmer.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The fuel economy of the Range Rover Sport is not excellent for its class, which is quite expected considering the heavyweight of the SUV. The full-time 4WD drivetrain also makes an impact on the fuel economy. It still manages to return a pretty decent fuel economy for its class. The Range Rover Sport returns 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway and gets a decent fuel tank capacity of 23 gallons. The combined driving range of 345 miles is quite decent for the class.

The Range Rover Sport offers the least fuel efficiency in its class. The driving range is also the least in the segment. The BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne offers similar fuel economy. The driving range is also quite similar for these two SUVs as there is no big difference in the fuel tank capacity. The Audi Q7 has the largest fuel tank capacity in its class, which can hold 26.4-gallons, and it also offers the best driving range of 475 miles.

Interior
7.0/10

The Range Rover Sport is known for its classy interior design that looks premium and modern at the same time. The interior of the Range Rover Sport does not compromise on practicality either. The space inside the cabin is good enough to accommodate five passengers with comfort. The front row in particular offers good enough space for the driver and the passenger to stretch their feet. The commanding driving position and view of the road ahead give you the king of the road feel.

The driver seat offers multiple adjustments to help the driver get a comfortable driving position. The ergonomics are also well taken care of and all the controls for the driver fall within the reach. The rear seats of the Range Rover Sport also offer pretty good space for the passengers. However, the headroom in the rear row feels a bit cramped, compared to some of the other rivals.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport offers the best legroom for the front row passengers compared to the rivals. The cargo area behind the second row is also the best in its class. The Audi Q7 comes standard with three rows of seating and can accommodate seven passengers inside its cabin. Though the interior dimensions of the Porsche Cayenne are not revealed by Porsche, it offers good enough space to accommodate five passengers.

Standout interior features:

  • 10 -way power driver seat
  • 8 -way power passenger seat
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Alloy and wood trim on dash

2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Infotainment System

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport features a 5-inch touchscreen display mounted on the center of the dashboard. The Range Rover Sport has made sure to keep the passengers entertained while they are inside the cabin. The infotainment system is easy to use and comes equipped with all the features that you expect from a car in this segment. It gets AM/FM radio, satellite radio, and a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The Autobiography package available with the Supercharged trim adds a more premium 14-speaker surround-sound audio system.

Standout infotainment features:

  • AM/FM radio
  • Satellite radio
  • 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio system
  • CD player
  • Wireless cell phone hookup

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior styling of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is one of the most appealing reasons to buy the SUV. It gets a proper old-school SUV look from the outside but looks more modern than any other rivals. The boxy design with a sloping roofline goes well with the Range Rover design language. The Range Rover badging right above the front grille draws your attention instantly. The exterior of the Range Rover Sport is well-proportionate from all sides and looks pleasing to the eyes.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is the most compact SUV in its class when you look at the overall length and wheelbase of the SUV. However, when it comes to the width of the car, it beats all its rivals to become the widest SUV in the segment. The same goes for the height of the Range Rover Sport as it is the highest SUV in its class. The Audi Q7 has the longest wheelbase and is also the longest overall SUV in its class.

Standout exterior features:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • Bi-xenon headlights
  • Adjustable air suspension
  • Keyless entry

Safety
8.0/10

The Land Rover badge is enough to show the safety of the Range Rover Sport. The 2011 Range Rover Sport is not rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). That’s why we can not comment on the actual safety ratings of the car. However, considering the kind of safety features and the build quality of the Range Rover Sport, it is among one of the safest cars in its class.

Some of the salient safety features include:

  • Electronic brakeforce distribution
  • Engine immobilizer
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Emergency braking assist

Final Verdict

The 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is an easy recommendation for those who want an SUV that stands out of the crowd and looks rugged yet sophisticated at the same time. The Range Rover Sport also comes with impressive off-road capabilities carrying forward its family DNA. The cabin is quite spacious and offers good comfort and luxury. The Range Rover Sport should be on your list if you are looking for an SUV in its class.
