Overview

With a complete overhaul back in 2018 and several subsequent updates, Kia has managed to keep the Rio fresh and appealing with its signature design and modern features. While it may not look it, the Rio is arguably a lot more appealing than the Hyundai Accent sedan it is based on. It also manages to undercut its rivals with a very competitive starting price and a long feature list. Available in both Sedan and Hatchback body styles, the Rio stands out with its excellent design and class-leading Interiors. A lot more standard features have also been added for 2020 with the new model including an updated infotainment system.

Buying Advice

Because of extra convenience features like cruise control, foldable rear seats, keyless entry, and more, the S model is worth the difference over the base trim. You can also opt for the technology package to add a lot more features including some important active driver assistance features, and LED headlights for a reasonable price bump of $800. And if you need even more features, you could always opt for the Tech Package that is exclusively available with the S trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Being a Kia, it also gets a long standard feature list, offering a lot of value. More advanced features are also available on the higher trims. The Kia Rio gets a new 1.6 L Inline-4 engine under the hood which has been tuned to be more efficient while losing 10hp of power 7lb-ft of torque and now comes mated to a new CVT transmission. Prices start at around $15,580 and the Rio sedan is offered in two trims. The Rio continues to compete with affordable subcompacts like the Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris, and Chevrolet Sonic.

Features
5.0/10

The sedan model is available in two trim levels unlike the hatchback, which is only available in the higher-end S trim. The range starts with the LX model that includes features like automatic headlights, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, cloth seats, and 15-inch steel rims. Upgrading to the S trim also includes a 60/40 split rear bench seat, adjustable rear headrests, front row center armrest, rear USB charge ports, cruise control, and remote keyless entry. The S model is offered with the Tech Package that further adds Forward Collision Warning, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, LED headlights, LED Positioning Lights, UVO eServices, SiriusXM, and a Supervision meter cluster with a 3.5" LCD display. The following table shows the detailed features of each trim of the 2020 Kia Rio sedan-

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Combining the efficient petrol engine with a smooth CVT has done wonders for the Kia Rio in terms of efficiency, returning 33 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway, which are the highest in its class. The combined range is also impressive with around 430 miles, thanks to a bigger than average 11.9-gallon fuel tank. Kia absolutely nailed it by introducing the new power-efficient engine and CVT transmission, boosting the MPG figures to the best-in-class numbers.

With the most efficient setup, the Kia Rio manages to return slightly better figures than all of its rivals and also gets the largest fuel tank, followed by the Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa. But, the Chevrolet Sonic with its turbocharged engine is a lot less efficient, especially in the city. Overall the Rio is the best in the segment followed by the Yaris which is the only other one here that provides a combined range above 400 miles.

Interior
5.0/10

Step inside the cabin and the Rio looks and feels like a segment above. Kia has provided good quality materials on all the main touchpoints, giving the cabin an upmarket and high-quality feel, unlike its competitors. The dashboard layout is also simple and straightforward with well-placed controls and some practical storage spaces. The infotainment system is well integrated into the dashboard with physical controls surrounding it, and climate controls are placed below it.

The chunky steering wheel feels premium and gets plenty of controls for easy access. As with all subcompact sedans, rear-seat space is at a premium and is only fit for shorter journeys. Cloth upholstery comes as standard, and the front seats offer plenty of support with good bolstering. Trunk space is average at 13.7 cubic feet, which can be expanded on the S model which gets 60/40 split rear seats.

Although Kia has managed to balance space well between both rows, it does fall short compared to rivals like the Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Sonic, both of which offer better interior and trunk space. The Toyota Yaris comes with the best quality interior while the Chevy has some low-quality interior bits whereas the Kia Rio also has some subpar interior materials. Overall the Yaris has the best interior in this segment while the Chevy is the most spacious. Some notable interior features include:

  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Sliding front-row center armrest
  • Rear USB charge ports
  • Power windows with auto up/down

What’s there to keep you entertained?

One of the major updates for 2020 is the new and updated infotainment system available as standard on all models. The 7-inch touchscreen display is placed neatly in the middle, and all the modern features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity are included as standard.

All models also get a 6 speaker audio system right from the base LX model. Upgrading to the S model also includes USB ports at the rear. Opting for the Tech Package also adds a more advanced system with voice controls, telematics, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Some notable infotainment features include:

  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • SiriusXM satellite radio (S)
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity
  • 6-speaker audio system

Exterior
5.0/10

In a sea of bland-looking subcompacts, Kia has made some effort to make the Rio stand out. With sharp lines and the signature Kia grille flanked by aggressive headlights. The overall design is very basic, but it does look a lot different than the Hyundai Accent sedan it's based on. The flared wheel arches and subtle rear diffuser add a splash of sportiness to the otherwise boring design.

The Rio is offered in six color choices but unfortunately, even the range-topping S trim only gets 15-inch steel wheels with wheel covers. Opting for the Tech Package would get you LED headlamps and positioning lights which add a nice touch while making the exterior look updated and advanced. The Rio has a curb weight of 2,767 lbs that could be considered as the segment standard.

In terms of dimensions, the Kia Rio slots in neatly between the bigger Nissan Versa and the compact Toyota Yaris. The wheelbase is also average compared to rivals, but it is longer than both the Chevrolet Sonic and Toyota Yaris. The Chevrolet Sonic is the heaviest while the Yaris is the lightest whereas the Nissan Versa offers the most ground clearance making it the most practical one. Based on exterior beauty, all of these machines look good in their own ways. Some notable exterior features of the 2020 Kia Rio sedan include:

  • Automatic headlights
  • LED headlights and positioning lights
  • Power heated outside mirrors
  • 15-inch steel wheels
  • Body-colored exterior door handles

Safety
6.0/10

Despite its affordable pricing, the Kia Rio doesn't compromise on passenger safety, securing the "Top Safety Pick '' award from the IIHS for the 2019 model year. But, it hasn't gone through NHTSA's safety tests yet. A lot of active safety features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, are available as options on the higher S trim. Unfortunately, the base LX model is limited to basic features like anti-lock brakes, airbags, traction control, and more. But still, the Rio is a very safe vehicle considering the standard safety features as the safety scores it received. Some notable safety features include:

  • Rearview monitor with parking guidance
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • UVO eServices
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Advanced tire pressure monitoring
  • Brake Assist System

Competition
8.0/10

Kia Rio vs Toyota Yaris

With a starting price of under $16,000, the Kia Rio brings a lot more value to the table. The Rio is also arguably the better-looking option with a more modern and sporty design. Regarding performance, both options get a small capacity engine, but the Kia Rio offers slightly better performance and also gets a smoother but boring CVT transmission. On the other hand, the Toyota Yaris can be bought with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, both of which are a lot more exciting than the Kia and the Toyota Yaris makes up for the extra price with a lot more standard features like cruise control, adjustable steering wheel, and more.

Kia Rio vs Chevrolet Sonic

If you’re shopping for a smooth and affordable daily driver, efficiency is almost always one of the highest priorities. This is where the Kia Rio excels over the Sonic, returning over 7 MPG more combined. But, the turbocharged engine in the Sonic does offer a lot more performance and a more exciting 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sonic also edges out the Kia Rio in terms of interior and cargo space. Overall, if you’re looking for a fun compact sedan for an affordable price, the Chevrolet Sonic is a better option.

Kia Rio vs Nissan Versa

Although Kia has managed to offer a lot of features and value for the money, it still misses out on some important features compared to the Nissan Versa like standard cruise control and lane departure warning. The Versa is also more practical with a more spacious trunk, letting you squeeze in an extra bag or two. Performance-wise, there’s little to choose between the two, and both get identical powertrain setup, and also return similar efficiency figures. Overall, it really does come down to design and feature preferences.

Final Verdict
8.4/10

With a lot of updates and an all-new powertrain, the 2020 Kia Rio has improved in all ways that count. It continues to offer plenty of value with a well-equipped base model that now features a capable infotainment system. The Rio also comes with the best-in-class mpg figures and range making it the most value for money choice in this segment. For a basic subcompact car, the Kia Rio is an excellent choice, especially with the new efficient powertrain and updated standard feature list.

              A Good Little Car!

Pros - ["- Excellent gas mileage", "- very nice interior"]

Cons - ["- looks a little TOO boxy", "- should come with a CD player"]

I love how this car is great on gas! Also, the interior is very nice and I love the display screen and the Bluetooth capabilities. I also love the back up camera. I do wish it came with a CD player though.
