As one of the cheapest and value-focused SUVs in the segment, the Kia Niro has been a good seller for the brand since its launch back in 2017. The biggest reason for its popularity continues to be the standard hybrid and optional plug-in hybrid powertrains on offer, making the Niro the default choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency and practicality. Like most Kia offerings, the Niro also brings a lot of value to the table but, understandably, loses out on the fun factor. Reliability has also been impressive in recent years and the 2022 Niro seems to continue that trend with no recalls so far and no registered complaints. Let's take a closer look at how the Niro SUV performs regarding reliability.

2022 Kia Niro User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - In some cases, owners report the Niro stalling with plenty of charge left while on the move. Random stalling was also reported.

Electrical Problems

  • Electrical malfunction - The hybrid system caused issues for some owners, leading to battery malfunctions and limiting performance. In some rare cases, the SUV was shut down due to hybrid system issues. The tailgate is also opened unintentionally in some cases.

Safety Problems

  • Airbags - In some rare cases, the airbags failed to deploy even after frontal collisions.
  • Driver assistance systems - The forward collision avoidance system is prone to failure, even leading to a few crashes.

Exterior Problems

  • Windshield - The windshield is prone to cracking even on newer examples and several cases were reported of bad glare in the sun.

Should you buy the 2022 Kia Niro?

Despite the complicated hybrid drivetrain, the Kia Niro retains its crown as one of the most reliable compact SUVs in the segment. For the price, the Niro offers excellent value with a hybrid system as standard and excellent efficiency figures. The Niro is also easy to live with thanks to a spacious cabin and comprehensive feature list that includes several advanced features. Overall, if you're in the market for a compact SUV that focuses on efficiency and comfort above all else, the 2022 Kia Niro should be the default choice. Those looking for even more efficiency can opt for the PHEV model or the fully-electric Niro.
