Overview

The 2016 Jaguar XF has been completely redesigned and has got the Supercharged V6 engine as standard across the trim levels. What hasn’t changed in the XF is its luxurious cabin, powerful performance from the V6, and stellar ride and handling. From its sophisticated looks to its aggressive engine under its hood, the XF not only stands as a great luxury sedan but also creates its niche as it raises the bar.

Buying Advice

To get the best value for the money spent, we recommend getting the Prestige trim as it offers a great combination of luxury and performance that will suit both, your pocket and your style. The Prestige commands a five grand premium over the base trim and the price difference is justified by the fact that you add a lot of luxury and driver-assist features which the base trim otherwise misses out.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Jaguar XF range starts at $51,900 and breaches the $65,000 mark for the top-of-the-line S trim. As standard, the XF is an RWD sedan while the AWD is available on all the models for a slight premium. Having said that, the 2016 Jaguar XF sedan rivals the likes of Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, in the midsize luxury sedan segment.

Features
9.0/10

The 2016 Jaguar XF sedan is offered in 4 trims, PREMIUM, PRESTIGE, R-SPORT, and S. The pricing starts at $51,900 for the base variant and goes up to $65,700 for the highest trim. Jaguar offers a 3.0L Supercharged V6 engine in all of its models and offers 340 hp for the first three trims and 380 hp for the S trim. Jaguar offers an 8-speed automatic with all of the trims as standard.

We Recommend

To get the best value for the money spent, we recommend getting the Prestige trim as it offers a great combination of luxury and performance that will suit both, your pocket and your style. The Prestige commands a five grand premium over the base trim and the price difference is justified by the fact that you add a lot of luxury and driver-assist features which the base trim otherwise misses out.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Under its hood, the 2016 Jaguar XF sedan offers a 3.0L supercharged V6 motor in all of the models. The first 3 trims offer a slightly detuned version of the engine that churns out 340 hp along with 332 lb-ft of torque, while the S model comes with a higher state-of-tune version of the same engine that produces a massive 380 hp.

Not only are the engines powerful, but also feel well-tuned and refined from the previous generation model. Jaguar offers an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard in all of the trims. The transmission feels smooth and allows quick gearshifts and brisk acceleration. Even with a good amount of horses present under its hood, the XF takes 5.3 seconds to go from 0-60 mph and 13.9 seconds to cover a quarter-mile

All except the BMW 535i comes with a V6 engine while the BMW comes with an inline-6 engine. The Jaguar XF produces the highest amount of power but it is the Mercedes-Benz E 400 that puts out the highest 354 lb-ft of torque among all. The Audi A6 with a supercharged V6 and Quattro AWD does the quickest 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds and covers the fastest quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

As per the EPA, the Jaguar XF with the supercharged V6 will return a gas mileage of 18 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. With the AWD there is a drop of 2 mpg on the highway. The higher state-of-tune version of the same engine surprisingly returns a similar gas mileage as the standard engine. The 2016 Jaguar XF comes with an 18.4-gallon fuel tank and has 330 miles plus range in the city and 515 miles on the highway.

All the rivals offer better gas mileage compared to the XF and also have a much larger fuel tank capacity. Among the rivals, the BMW 535i returns the highest gas mileage that is 2 mpg more in the city, 3 mpg more on the highway, and 2 mpg more combined compared to the XF.

Interior
9.0/10

Jaguar as a brand has a legacy of offering premium and luxurious experiences with sophistication in its cars. The Jaguar XF follows the same line without any fancy and tacky nit bits on the inside, the cabin feels straightforward, classy, and elegant. With the use of high-end and premium materials in the cabin, the interior feels well-crafted and justifies the premium pricing. The dashboard includes a large and crisp infotainment screen that can be used to control almost every function inside the car.

The heated front seats are well-bolstered and comfortable which offer a good amount of support while going on long drives. The rear seats also feel comfortable and offer a decent amount of room to stretch. All thanks to its longer wheelbase, the XF offers the best in class cargo space of 17.7 cubic feet. While among the rivals the Audi A6 has a slightly more spacious cabin than the Jaguar especially at the rear. As for the cargo capacity, the A6 with 14.1 cubic feet and the BMW 535i with 14 cubic feet of trunk capacity remain behind the XF. Key interior features include:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Auto-dimming inside rearview mirror
  • Leatherette upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Power-adjustable front seats

How intuitive is the Jaguar XF’s infotainment system?

The 2016 Jaguar XF comes with the latest InControl Touch Pro infotainment system that runs on an 8-inch touchscreen. The new infotainment system is a clear departure from the past Jaguar’s laggy and cumbersome use of infotainment systems. As standard, you get features like a 12-speaker Meridian sound system with 380-watt total output, USB ports, HD Radio, Bluetooth, etc. Key infotainment features include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • InControl Touch Pro interface
  • HD Radio
  • Meridian Sound System
  • Satellite radio
  • Voice controls
  • Smartphone-app integration

Exterior
8.0/10

With some superficial similarities from the outgoing model, the new XF stands as a new car with a more refreshing and sharper feel to it. From its straight lines to its smooth curves that blend to give its skin an elegant look, the XF looks beautiful and graceful. From its long hood to its calm on the surface yet aggressive headlights, the XF looks like a sophisticated low slung sedan. With the recent redesign, the XF now looks more chiseled and sophisticated compared to the clumsy-looking previous XF models.

Safety
8.0/10

Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has crash-tested the 2016 Jaguar XF or any of its previous model years. So based on the ratings we can’t have a clear-cut judgment about the safety of the car. Having said that, the standard suite of safety features available on the 2016 Jaguar XF to ensure your safety includes six airbags, an anti-lock brake system, stability, and traction control. While the higher trims unlock the advanced suite of driver-assistance features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision mitigation, etc. Key safety features include:

  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Traction and stability control
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Blind-spot warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rearview camera

Final Verdict

British, sophisticated, and simple, the 2016 Jaguar XF perfectly stands as a synonym for these words. From its unique exteriors to its well-crafted interiors, the XF proudly boasts its true British nature from every spec of it. From its sophisticated and sleek lines, the XF looks quite sporty yet retains its corporate and well-mannered look that gives this car a unique stance. In terms of performance and fuel efficiency, it still has a lot to cover up with the German rivals. While in terms of cabin space and overall practicality the Jaguar XF is at par with its rivals.
