They also insinuated that we didn't maintain the car properly when in fact we followed the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and even put full synthetic oil since the car was new. We were also insulted by an offer to buy the car from us for $500 in its current state. We are terribly disappointed byRead More

The category of midsize sedans is one a lot of people turn to when they need a car because these vehicles can be quite spacious and well-equipped, while still being affordable. The 2014 Hyundai Sonata is a value-for-money sedan that has strengths like modern interiors, a long list of convenience features, as well as, safety features, good fuel economy as well as engine performance. However, it has reported a total of 492 complaints and has been recalled 7 times in total this year for multiple issues. The problems range from catastrophic engine failure, electrical problems, steering problems, and so on. Starting at $21,495, it is quite affordable for most people who are looking for new cars. Competing against names like the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Nissan Altima, it has to get on top of the reliability issues to be competitive. Find out more about Hyundai Sonata problems in the article below.

2014 Hyundai Sonata User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  • The most common complaint is the Hyundai Sonata engine failure. After hearing the abnormal popping and rattling sounds from the engine, there are various warning lights flash and the vehicle comes to a stop.
  • There have been a few cases of complete brake failure of the car. Since the car does not respond to inputs at all, the problem is likely with the brake booster.
  • There have been a large number of cases where the Hyundai Sonata steering mechanism has failed. Sometimes, the rack is just noisy but in other cases, there is failure and loss of power assistance.
  • Multiple cases of the front end bottoming out due to suspension failure have been recorded.
  • There have been a large number of transmission problems reported as well. These include the car not being able to be shifted to the right gear as well as hesitating to shift at the right time.

Electrical system problems:

  • Many cars have reported that the electrical system shuts down completely after stalling and the car is not able to be restarted. In some instances, smoke is produced and the car catches on fire.
  • Many contacts reported that the car had multiple warning lights on the dashboard coming on and off.
  • The trunk opening and closing mechanism is prone to failure and has been complained about according to multiple owners.
  • There have been multiple vehicles catching on fire due to electrical faults. These include the check engine light, battery warning light, steering and oil lights, hybrid system warning, and so on.
  • The problem of headlights cutting off when using the turn signal is very common and has been widely reported. Headlights are also prone to flashing on and off while driving. This makes the car very unsafe.
  • Many cars have been issued the Sonata hybrid system warning and have failed. The results are catastrophic and the expense for the repair is very high.

Exterior problems:

  • Many owners have also reported problems associated with the headlights of the cars not being bright enough.
  • The exterior lights have the problem of burning out fuses, and flickering, and are unreliable in general.

Safety problems:

  • The forward collision warning is notably error-prone and can engage the brake even when there are no objects in the front. The cruise control has also produced errors in some cars.
  • Seat belts of the car also do not properly retract in many vehicles and cause a safety problem.
  • A large number of cars have reported airbag-related faults in which they produced warnings even when the car was not involved in an accident. Many cars also failed to deploy the airbag and protect occupants in the event of accidents.

Interior problems:

  • There have been many incidents of the sunroof exploding while driving the cars. This causes the glass to get in and is a huge threat to safety.
  • There are multiple interior quality issues including the trim pieces breaking.

Should you buy the 2014 Hyundai Sonata?

The Hyundai Sonata promises a lot on paper but does not deliver half of that in the real world. It is bogged down by an unnecessarily long list of problems that affect its reliability and is one of the worst cars if you are looking for something that is not a headache to maintain. Nearly all of its failures are catastrophic and the repair bills are huge, which results in you not getting anything for the money you’re paying. This is especially not helping it in the segment where competition is tight and reliability is a strong point of many of its rivals. In this scenario, we have to say that despite the peppy powertrain, we have to look away from the Sonata and consider the Toyota Camry.
