When looking for a practical car that fits in among an urban crowd and keeps you reasonably entertained, most people turn to the midsize crossover SUV segment. These cars handle the rigors of everyday life much better than most other body styles do and have found a sound footing in the American automotive market. The 2022 Honda Passport is one of the cars that are hard to miss in the segment, and with good reason. It gives a roomy cabin and a peppy engine along with excellent features and a good safety quotient.

More importantly, these cars have a reputation of being easy to maintain and hence make your life easier than ever. We do love how this car looks and how it blends grace and ruggedness in a Japanese fashion that focuses on utility. It might be a little pricey at an MSRP of $39,045 but is the best pick if you want two rows of seating. It competes against rivals like the Hyundai Palisade, the Kia Telluride, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Let us see what we can learn about Honda Passport problems through this article.

2022 Honda Passport User Complaints and Problems

Honda is a manufacturer that gives utmost importance to the trust that an owner places on the car. Their reputation was built on cars that could perform well and do so repeatedly over several years. Even Honda has had slip-ups in this area and one can observe this with some of their recent cars. That said, the Honda Passport's shifting problems have haunted it for a while.

To understand more about this, we should take a look at the various complaints customers have registered about the particular car. This will give us a clearer picture of the problems the owners have faced. However, data on the current model year will be less and hence we would focus on 2021 Honda Passport problems.

Mechanical problems:

  1. The brakes on the car have been reported to be not working according to one owner. The warning light has flashed several times and the Honda dealership has not found a solution.
  2. Some owners have raised a concern about the vehicle making a noise when shifting from park to reverse or drive. Multiple owners have reported 2021 Honda Passport transmission problems. Even new cars have reported a lot of unreliability regarding this particular part.
  3. Some owners have noticed that the brake pedal is unreasonably stiff and causes the car to not start when the start button is pushed. The owner then uses the remote start and has to do so every day because the dealership has not found a solution.

Electrical system problems:

  1. Some people have stated that while driving at 50 MPH, the radio suddenly went off and the instrument panel blacked out. This also resulted in the horn not functioning properly and windows failing to operate. The vehicle then turned completely off and lost all power. The same issue was also observed by other owners and the diagnosis in one case was that the dashboard wiring connectors were faulty.

Exterior problems:

  1. Owners have complained that when driving in snowy conditions, snow collects on the LED headlights and causes reduced visibility. This does not happen on halogen lights because it runs much hotter.

Safety problems:

  1. Few owners have complained about the tires blowing out even when conditions were not extremely harsh.
  2. Some contacts have complained that while driving at various speeds, the collision mitigation braking system activates and the steering wheel would shake uncontrollably. The system is notably error-prone.
  3. A few owners have also complained about the lane keeping assist veering the car from one lane to the other so harshly that sometimes it might be the cause of accidents.

The current generation has only been on sale from 2019 but has already reported a few complaints. However, there have not been any recalls because the brand might still be studying the issues. The transmission system in this car seems to be a problematic one and has been the source of headache for a lot of owners. Let us take a look at the recalls history of this car.

2022 Honda Passport Recalls

Although some cars may have a large number of complaints, Honda responds well by issuing recalls that address these complaints. So far, the brand has been prompt in issuing recalls for nearly all of the problem areas that have concerned owners of the 2021 Honda Passport. No recalls have taken place for the 2022 model year and the same applies to the 2021 model year. The last recorded recalls have been for the 2019 Passport. The said year had issues very different from what owners have faced in 2021.

The Honda Passport is a reliable car, to begin with, because it has sold a large number of units and not many owners complain in proportion to the number of units sold. But the problem is that the issues that look like common problems have not been rectified by the manufacturer. We do hope that owners have got justice by solving these issues on a case-by-case basis.

Which model year of the Honda Passport should you avoid?

The current generation of the Honda Passport has been in production since 2019 and has been a highly desirable car. We have identified certain patterns in the complaints but the problems are nothing Honda cannot fix. Talking about years that you should be avoiding, the debut year had the largest number of complaints with a total of 93, which is rather high. It also had six recalls to its name.

For a modern car, the complaints history of this car is very reassuring because, despite the level of complexity they operate at, this car has managed to keep problems at bay. However, the most problematic year seems to be the 1998 model with a total of 270 complaints.

Should you buy the 2022 Honda Passport?

The Honda Passport SUV is a decent car that has a lot of attributes that buyers find attractive. It also has an engaging V-6 engine which is thoroughly entertaining to drive. This car also has tons of features, technology, and a decent amount of luxury. We would say that in terms of reliability, it does raise some question marks but apart from some problem areas, it is mostly a good car. Our recommendation would be to buy it.
