The 2014 Honda Civic continues to be a part of the ninth generation of the sedan. Like always, it comes with a plethora of standard features and makes its place in the market with its refined driving dynamics and high efficiency. While it has been mechanically tweaked, the 2014 Civic sedan carries forward its revered reliability quotient.

In the current year, it has 295 complaints and 2 recalls, which do not seem alarming for a vehicle that commands a waiting list. A majority of its problems are related to its power train setup, while buyers have also been irked by the airbag system. Yet, the Japanese sedan manages to defend itself in a market dominated by stalwarts like the Hyundai Elantra, the Ford Focus, and the Chevrolet Cruze.

2014 Honda Civic User Complaints and Problems

Considering the fact that the Honda Civic has been on sale for decades now, the list of user complaints is expected to be a long one. That said, the high resale value that Honda cars tend to receive is due to their dependability and these problems and complaints faced by the buyers are one off cases for the hundreds of thousands of Civics plying on the road.

Mechanical Complaints

  • Error with the transmission unit: The 2014 Honda Civic transmission problems are related to the popping of the fill plug. As a result, the transmission fluid tends to leak, which causes the unit to fail. It shudders and hesitates excessively. However, since the CVT setup is a new inclusion, we expect its performance to improve in the succeeding iterations.
  • Failure of the battery unit: In a handful of cases, buyers of the 2014 Honda Civic have also reported the battery dying unexpectedly. A majority of complainants have reported low mileage failures, which makes the problem highly concerning.
  • Loss of power: The Honda Civic’s engine problems are directly related to its unexpected loss of power. Buyers have reported the vehicle stalling inadvertently, which increases the risk of a crash.
  • Loss of power steering: Among the 2014 Honda Civic’s common problems, buyers have also reported the failure of the power steering assistance. The steering wheel becomes excessively stiff, which makes it hard to maneuver. In one case, it has led to a crash, which resulted in the vehicle being totaled.

Structural Complaints

  • Chipping body paint: The Honda Civic’s paint issues are recurring and have been a part of the vehicle’s history over the past couple of years. Even in 2014, buyers have reported the exterior paint chipping from its hood and rear doors. This concern is most commonly noted in the white paint option.

Electric System Complaints

  • Malfunctioning Tire Pressure Monitoring System: The Tire Pressure Monitoring System installed on the 2014 Honda Civic has been a cause of concern. Several buyers have reported the functionality to issue false warnings about low-pressure levels. As a result, buyers have scheduled maintenance appointments, however, all the tires were found in perfect condition. Additionally, in some cases, buyers have reported the tires blowing out due to the slightest impact.
  • Illumination of airbag light: Several buyers of the Honda Civic have reported the airbag warning light to remain illuminated. Complainants have recorded the system’s inability to identify a passenger in the front seat, which can interfere with the functioning of the airbags.

2014 Honda Civic Recalls

Honda as a brand has had a great record in the past for its dependability and the 2014 Honda Civic is a prime example of that. The Civic has been recalled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association only twice till date, the leading feredal organisation responsible for keeping people safe on American roadways.

The problems faced by the buyers weren't major and showcased no grave danger to life and property. While there was one recall for a possibility of a damaged tire, the other one was regarding problems with the transmission software. Both of which were rectified promptly by the manufacturer free of cost.

Should you buy the 2014 Honda Civic?

The 2014 Honda Civic’s performance has improved considerably in terms of its reliability. Its complaints have reduced over the past couple of years and even its recalls seem to be at an all-time low. As a result, the Japanese sedan carves a niche for itself and promises to be a trustworthy option. While the new CVT unit seems troublesome, we expect Honda to remain proactive in solving all the concerns of the buyers and gets a nod from us.
