The GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV that seats up to eight passengers. It's available in three trim levels: SLE, SLT, and Denali. The allure of the 2020 GMC Yukon is fairly well known: It has plenty of interior room, three rows of seating, and sufficient towing capacity to pull almost anything. The Yukon has two powerful V8 engines available with both options delivering exhilarating performance.

The 2020 GMC Yukon has been generally well-received by reviewers and complainants. Some users have voiced concerns about the quality of the materials used inside the cabin on lower trim levels, despite there being only three complaints filed with the NHTSA along with three recalls. Despite these issues, the Yukon still managed to sell over 63,442 units in 2020. The GMC Yukon is viewed favorably by the market as a whole; it competes with the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2020 Ford Expedition, and 2020 Lincoln Navigator and is viewed as a powerful and entertaining vehicle to drive.

2020 GMC Yukon User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Powertrain - According to one complaint, the transmission was broken. They experienced a loss of power, gear slipping, shuttering, and being unable to move before it went out.

Safety Problems

  • Driver assistance features - According to one complaint, the lane change warning and parking or backing assistance systems were not working properly due to line-keeping assist.
  • Seat belts - According to one complaint, the passenger was unable to release the seatbelt clasp by distressing the small red button. Other passengers called emergency services, who were unable to release their seat belts either. The ranger used a seatbelt-cutting emergency tool to cut the seat belt, releasing the passenger.

Software Error May Cause Unintended Braking

Unintentional activation of the driveline-protection system will result in unintentional braking on the wheel opposite the failed sensor, causing the car to unexpectedly pull to one side and raising the likelihood of a collision.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019.

Fuel Pump Missing Pressure Regulator

In the presence of an ignition source, overpressurization can shatter the fuel pump and result in leaks, raising the possibility of a fire.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019.

Tire Failure may Cause Sudden Air Loss

Over-cured tires may experience a sidewall break that causes a rapid loss of air or a belt edge separation that results in tread/belt loss. Either situation can result in a lack of vehicle control, which raises the possibility of a collision.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 22, 2021.

Should you buy the 2020 GMC Yukon?

The 2020 GMC Yukon has been completely redesigned. It's one of the most popular SUVs on the market, and for good reason: it offers a great blend of size, comfort, features, and performance, and it can handle off-road terrain and bad weather conditions better than most SUVs on the market. The Yukon also comes standard with plenty of safety features, including blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

While GMC has issued recalls for affected vehicles, it's something to keep in mind if you're considering this SUV. Another concern is reliability; while GMC products are generally quite reliable, there have been a few but limited isolated complaints, however, the Yukon is still a good value and worth considering if you're in the market for a large SUV that can seat up to eight passengers. Most users are happy with their purchases, and the company has actively sought to recall the vehicles when needed. If you're in the market for a large SUV, the 2020 GMC Yukon is worth your money.
