Many buyers are enticed by innovative automotive technology, and venturing into hybrids is a good way to explore some new technology while still sticking to the benefits of the conventional powertrain. The 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid offers some of this from a manufacturer Americans trust. However, with multiple engine failures, transmission failures, and 378 complaints this year alone, it does not look promising. Starting at an MSRP of $26,085, it does manage to undercut the price of rivals like the Hyundai Sonata hybrid, the Kia K5 hybrid, and the Toyota Camry hybrid, but they are also more reliable. Take a look at the 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid problems in detail to come to a better conclusion about the car.

2017 Ford Fusion hybrid User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical problems:

  • Many owners have complained that the engines have overheated even though there are no leaks or other problems. White smoke is then produced from the exhaust and the spark plugs start burning up.
  • Many owners have reported issues with the car completely locking up the steering wheel when going at highway speeds. Sometimes it is just loss of assistance but in other cases, the issues are fatal.
  • The start-stop system in the car also has a known fault and fails to start the vehicle properly. In most cases, it requires a jumpstart.
  • There have also been quite a few complaints about the Ford Fusion hybrid engine light coming on due to some common faults associated with the canister purge valves and the engine going into limp mode.
  • There are a few instances of Ford Fusion hybrid brake problems as well. Usually, the brake pedal stops responding due to a fault with the vacuum pump.
  • The worst problem associated with the car and one of the most common ones is Ford Fusion hybrid engine block problems. The issue is that the block is made of two materials that have two different melting points and hence the engine block will expand at different rates in different areas. This will cause a coolant leak which will result in catastrophic engine failure. This has affected too many owners to count but Ford has not responded with any recalls.
  • Many complaints have been associated with the 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid transmission problems in which the transmission refuses to shift, or produces loud noises leading to eventual failure.

Electrical system problems:

  • One of the most common problems owners have had is Ford Fusion hybrid battery problems. This makes a vehicle stall and not supply sufficient power to drive safely. It keeps going that even after multiple replacements.
  • Many owners have also complained that the speakers blast a sudden screech that is deafening and then shut themselves off completely.
  • Several electrical systems in the car have thrown up warnings and malfunctioned. Multiple fault codes are issued and this causes trouble to owners because these issues affect the climate control system, radio, seat controls, power windows, and so on.

Safety problems:

  • There are quite a few complaints about the airbags of this vehicle producing a warning sign that does not go away despite repairs.
  • Many owners have reported that the airbags failed to deploy in situations where they could have saved lives.
  • Several active safety features including pre-collision assist and lane-keep assist seem to malfunction in this car.

Miscellaneous problems:

  • One user has complained that the dial that is used to change gears on the center console is refusing to shift and is stuck in Park.
  • Many owners have complained that the Michelin energy saver tires are not safe to be used on road. The low-profile and the skinny walls are prone to damage and the tires were replaced multiple times. And since it is a hybrid, there is no spare tire available.
  • One user has complained that the windshield wipers of the car are not fast enough. Another user complained of the headlights are not bright enough.

Should you buy the 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid?

The 2017 Ford Fusion hybrid might be an innovative car but its problems do not seem to end. Since most users are facing issues with the steering, transmission, engine, and so on, these issues are very much catastrophic and required huge repair bills. At this point, we cannot recommend the car to you because it simply does not make financial sense. Our pick would be the Toyota Camry hybrid.
