Overview

The new Ford Bronco Sport is the baby brother of the all-new, off-road-ready, full-size Bronco. The Bronco Sport poses as an impeccable compact SUV with outstanding off-roading capabilities, like its big brother. Buyers also get the quintessential indelible Bronco styling, just in a smaller package. The Blue-Oval’s compact Bronco Sport finds its rivalry against the likes of Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4

Buying Advice

Since the First Edition models are limited to just 2000 copies, we’d advise going for the Badlands. It’s more rugged and capable than other lower trims, as it features the punchier engine under the hood. It also fits various off-road specific equipment making it ready for all trails and tracks.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Let’s dive deep into the trim levels, features, options, and other aspects of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport and see how it stands on each attribute and against each rival. The Bronco starts from a price range of $26,820 and goes all the way up to $38,500. This is not a price point that seems to be demanding or has a premium. It is a reasonable price for cars of that stature and thus the Bronco is made to rival those vehicles that are modern in style and looks. This is a big car in the midst of aerodynamic and performance highlighted SUV’s.

Features
8.0/10

The Ford Bronco Sport Base starts from $26,820 and is apt for buyers looking for the Bronco distinctive styling, rugged and boxy attire, and immense capabilities. It is followed by Big Bend starting from $28,320 and Outer Banks for $32,320. Then comes the Badlands that upgrades to a 2.0L engine which is brawnier contrasted to the base engine and feature various off-roading equipment. The Bronco Sport First Edition, being the most expensive of them all, starts from $38,500.

The base trim of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is well-equipped with ample features and also comes with a host of safety features under the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite. The Big Bend adds several convenience and comfort features to the base trim, making it an impressive and versatile daily-driving SUV. The Outer Banks is apt for buyers who don’t want to miss out on the Bronco ruggedness but are also into niceties that mostly belong to less off-road specific SUVs.

The Badlands trim converts the Bronco Sport from a daily driver to an off-road-ready SUV. With a plethora of off-roading discrete features, it makes the compact SUV take the most beaten track, trail on rocks, sand, mud, and other scrappy tracks. With the punchier engine under the hood, it is quicker, more powerful, and competent on various terrains. It adds two extra GOAT modes to the previous five modes that come standard in lower trim levels.

To end, the First Edition Bronco Sport chiefly celebrates the revival of a legendary nameplate and poses as a nearly loaded version of the Bronco Sport. It gets all the features that are deleted from the Badlands trim, plus several more that were listed in the table above. It will also include more luxurious interiors and stylish black exterior accents similar to the Outer Banks model. Ford says that it will only build 2000 copies of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport First Edition.Besides these trims, there are various features available on supporting trims as options. For example, a navigation system can be added to any trim level, along with Adaptive cruise control, which is also available.

Which Trim should you buy?

Since the First Edition models are limited to just 2000 copies, we’d advise going for the Badlands. It’s more rugged and capable than other lower trims, as it features the punchier engine under the hood. It also fits various off-road specific equipment making it ready for all trails and tracks.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Gone are the days, when opting for an SUV meant burning loads of paper currency on the fuel. With advanced engineering, the SUVs have become economical, and the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is a similarly strong case. With the base 1.5L, the Bronco Sport delivers an impressive 26mpg combined. These figures will be highly appreciated by the crowd that would use the Bronco’s small sibling for more urban cruising, running errands, and transporting their beloved ones from point A to point B.

With the Badlands husky 2.0L engine, the fuel efficiency drops to 23mpg combined. But then the engine is more potent and sturdy to handle rougher and hard terrains. Opt for any model, a 16-gallon fuel tank remains unchanged in each of them. The Bronco Sport can measure 360-plus miles with the base engine and a full fuel tank.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is a complete package with head-turning looks, outstanding powertrain capabilities which also include efficient fuel economy. Though the Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4 LE offer better figures. With the optional 2.0L engine under the hood, the numbers of Bronco Sport’s economy drop significantly. Similar is the case with the Jeep Cherokee’s optional V6 engine, which is more potent and less fuel-efficient.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport stands as a compact SUV for the family, and their luggage, and for long unplanned trips once in a while. Upon entrance, the occupants will see a combination of durable materials, a high utilitarian cabin, spacious interior seatings, and various “Jumping Bronco” easter eggs spread in the entire cabin. The boxy shape of the SUV converts more airy cabin space, and the various elements depict the ruggedness, yet there’s no compromise in terms of comfort.

The front seats are bolstered and upright, they offer the best visibility all around, except for the massive C-pillar that adds blindspots. The dashboard is wrapped with soft-touch materials, yet the lower portion is mostly grained plastic. The steering wheel adds to the disappointment with the grained-plastic touch, even in the Badlands trim. To the rear seats, the wide doors offer easy ingress and egress, and the seats are squishy and supportive over long routes. Though, six-foot-tall passengers might feel cramped with the tight legroom in the rear seats. Unfortunately, the rear seats don’t slide or recline, as in the case of some leading compact SUVs.

The materials range from Stain-resistant cloth upholstery and rubberized cargo floor to luxurious leather upholstery. Though the “Jumping Bronco” embroidery stays intact on all the seats, regardless of the trim level. The rubber flooring helps in easy cleaning after a great day in rugged fields or sand. There are tonnes of cubbies and storage space available in the cabin itself. In addition, the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport offers 32.5 cu-ft of cargo space behind the rear seats.

In case one is loafing in opening the tailgate for smaller items, the rear glass can also be opened to save some time. The tailgate offers adjustable floodlights that illuminate the area below the tailgate, even without cranking the engine on. The rear cargo space features a floor pattern to prevent luggage from swaying inside the vehicle. The 60/40-split rear seats fold down, completely flat, to have an accessible 65.2 cu-ft of storage space.

The rivals are much airier in the rear seats to the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The Toyota RAV4 LE offers the most spacious cargo space behind the rear seats. But there’s no comparison to the interiors of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, with the Bronco embroidery on the seats and imitations spread in the whole cabin. The cabin space itself inspires to trail in the unknowns, do minor rock-climbing, while the occupants remain comfortable inside. The noteworthy interior highlights of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport are:

  • Power adjustable seats(Outer Banks)
  • Easy-to-clean cloth bucket seats with zipper pockets with a MOLLE strap system and rear seats with rubberized back protector(Big Bend)
  • Leather Upholstery(Outer Banks)
  • Heated front seats
  • Interior ambient lighting
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport comes with practical and utilitarian cabin space, but that doesn’t keep the Bronco’s smaller sibling from being tech-loaded. Each Ford Bronco Sport features an 8-inch touchscreen with Ford's latest interface. It also incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration as well as remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app. The driver instrument cluster constitutes two analog gauges squeezing a decent size multi-information display.

The infotainment touchscreen starts with a 10-15 seconds “Bronco” emblem display, which can be annoying to some. The multi-information display customizes according to the driving mode, though the transition has a noticeable amount of lag. The base trim comes with a 6-speaker audio system which is eternal except the 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system in the First Edition. The infotainment highlights can be summarized as:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration
  • Remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app
  • Digital instrument panel
  • Wireless charging pad(First Edition)
  • 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system(First Edition)

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is the smaller sibling to the off-road-ready and rugged full-size Bronco. But it replicates the most classy and striking features that the revived moniker represents. Starting with the front fascia, beefy front with “BRONCO inscribed in the center of the grille looks jaw-dropping. The incomplete round DRLs with a sleek line running to the center look unique. From the side stance, the boxy SUV promises head-turning reactions, and the stepping roofline in the rear half, adds to headroom inside the cabin.

The rear section features bulky bumpers with stylish taillamps, and “Bronco Sport'' inscribed in the center. The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, has a single Blue-oval badge on the entire vehicle, and that too on the rear, left-side corner. Opting for the Badlands trims adds some distinctive off-roading tools like specific off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, and front tow hooks. The First Edition also comes with goodies like slightly taller all-terrain tires, roof rack cross bars, and a Class II tow hitch receiver. Opting for either trim converts the Bronco Sport from a daily drive to a trek-ready SUV.

Undoubtedly, the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport, twin to the brought back Bronco nameplate, would receive uninterrupted attention of the crowd, as compared to any other rival. There are various retro-touches and a legendary old-school boxy figure makes the Bronco Sport more desirable. The other cars have received some frequent updates and a bit of a modern styling but the charm of a retro-looking car always has the last word. The Jeep however is the biggest SUV on the table, some of its exterior features include:

  • Strong Shoulder Line
  • Bonnet Humps
  • Large wheel arches
  • Boxy design
  • LED headlights and tail lamp
  • Retro Styling

Safety
9.9/10

Though the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport hasn’t been through the crash-tests conducted by NHTSA and IIHS, it shares the platform with Ford Escape. The latter has scored some impressive ratings in the safety tests by the NHTSA and IIHS. All Ford cars all have a good reputation for their safety and the Bronco carrying the legendary name too is no less, the Bronco might look like an old-timer in style but is equipped with the most technologically advanced safety features. Some key features of the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport are:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Roll stability control
  • Rollover sensor
  • Frontal collision mitigation
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Trail control
  • A forward-looking 180-degree camera system
  • Trailer Sway control

Competition
7.0/10

2021 Ford Bronco Sport vs 2021 Jeep Cherokee

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport emerges as a more potent off-roading machine to the Jeep Cherokee. The two contenders to being the most rugged SUV, are neck-and-neck in the performance aspects and each offers two different engine options too. The interiors of the Jeep Cherokee are more spacious in the rear end and can offer more upscale attire. The Ford Bronco Sport can steal attention with its distinctive aesthetics while the Cherokee comes with a similar, conventional body shape and styling, while the Bronco Sport is a fresher breeze in the segment.

2021 Ford Bronco Sport vs 2021 Subaru Forester

The 2021 Ford Bronco and the Subaru Forester are neck-and-neck in terms of performance, efficiency, and capabilities. But the Bronco Sport has various fancy offerings like G.O.A.T modes, two engine options, four-wheel-drive, and more to attract off-road enthusiasts effortlessly. While the Forester has actually proved itself in the past few years the Bronco seems to be doing well.

2021 Ford Bronco Sport vs 2021 Toyota RAV4 LE

The Toyota RAV4 LE is more powerful than the base Bronco Sport and can tow significantly more. The RAV4 stands as an attractive deal as a daily-driving SUV that can handle rough terrains. But in terms of off-road capabilities, it’s no match to the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport. The Toyota is a completely different animal and is in fact known for its ruggedness and reliability but the Bronco is even better than the best and that makes it a place above the RAV4.

Final Verdict

The new Ford Bronco Sport is superior to its rivals in many aspects, and especially in being a title that has had global attention for a long time. The baby-brother to the full-size Bronco mimics an excellent daily driver, yet capable off-roading machine. The retro-touches and boxy body make it stand out, while the “Bronco” inscribed on the front is enough to stop the crowd from taking pictures.
