Overview

The 2017 Chrysler 300 is a full-size sedan sold in the US market for a starting price of $32,340. The 300 gets a powerful V6 engine as standard and also comes with an optional V8 engine. The standard V6 engine delivers on performance and also offers a decent fuel economy as well. The car packs in a quiet and refined interior and is packed with technology. However, the car has a bad reputation for its low reliability and mediocre safety scores. The 2017 Chrysler 300 competes in an already well-equipped segment with the likes of the 2017 Buick LaCrosse, the 2017 Nissan Maxima, and the 2017 Kia Cadenza.

Buying Advice

The 2017 Chrylser 300 C Platinum with the AWD setup is the best trim to go for. The C Platinum trim is slightly expensive over the C trim, but for the extra $4,000 ($2,000) for the RWD model, the car gets a fancy exterior trim that will help you stand out from the crowd and gets a more supple and soft suspension setup to aid in long journeys. It is also the most premium car in the bunch, with fancy features seen on luxury full-size sedans.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2017 Chrysler 300 is a family car that comes with a 3.6L V6 engine and RWD as standard and has AWD as optional. The car comes in four trim levels that offer increasing levels of luxury and premium over one another. The 2017 Chrysler 300 also gets the well-known V8 Hemi engine as an optional. Both the engines are coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 300's V6 engine is the balanced one out of the lot.

The car gets no changes for the year 2017. It sports a top-notch and premium interior with simple and easy technology on the inside. Although the car does not score well in the safety tests, it comes with a lot of advanced safety features and some driver assistance features as well. For the price point it's offered at ($32,340), there's tough competition from the rivals stated above. These rivals offer a much better interior, with better safety scores and a more modern and updated exterior design.

Features
7.5/10

The 2017 Chrysler 300 sedan is offered in four trim levels: 300 Limited, 300S, 300C, and 300C Platinum. These trims come with either the RWD or AWD setup. Pricing for the 300 starts at an affordable $32,340 for the base trim and goes up to $42,770 for the top trim. The AWD option adds a premium of $2,000-$3,000 over the standard RWD. The standard features on the car include leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, heated power front seats, heated mirrors, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and a rearview camera. All the trims get an optional 5.7L V8 Hemi engine with AWD as optional.

We Recommend

The 2017 Chrylser 300 C Platinum with the AWD setup is the best trim to go for. The C Platinum trim is slightly expensive over the C trim, but for the extra $4,000 ($2,000) for the RWD model, the car gets a fancy exterior trim that will help you stand out from the crowd and gets a more supple and soft suspension setup to aid in long journeys. It is also the most premium car in the bunch, with fancy features seen on luxury full-size sedans.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The 2017 Chrysler 300 with the 3.6L V6 engine and the RWD setup returns 19 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and a combined 21 mpg. This makes the 300 a very fuel-efficient car. The AWD version returns 18 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and a combined 21 mpg. The car has a fuel capacity of 18.5 gallons and delivers a combined mileage of 388.5 miles.

MPG (highway) 30 31 30 28

Range (city/highway) (miles) 351.5/555 331.8/489.8 300.3/429 370/518

Against the rivals, the 300's economy is not the best: it's the least. The Buick LaCrosse and the Maxima offer the most efficiency at 25 mpg combined, with the Cadenza offering the second-best at 23 mpg combined. In terms of range, however, the Chrysler offers the most highway range among all at 555 miles. The Cadenza offers the most city range at 370 city miles. This is due to the larger fuel tanks on the 300 and Cadenza that give them the edge over the more efficient cars.

Interior
7.9/10

"The 2017 Chrysler 300's 5-passenger interior is comfortable and roomy" - KBB

2017 Chrysler 300 Seating and Comfort

The 2017 Chrysler 300's interiors see no change from last year's model. It's worth noting that Chrysler sells this as a luxury sedan, and the interiors match up to these claims. The interiors are roomy and very well-made. There is plush luxury on the inside in terms of quality, seating, and layout. No negatives about the fit and finish levels as well: it's been executed perfectly with utmost attention to detail. The dash is covered in high-quality soft-touch rubber-type material that feels great to touch, but this material tends to attract dust. Also, the lower trims get a few hard plastic bits that are an eye-sore in an otherwise great interior.

The seats in the 300 offer excellent support and are large and wide. The front seats are a pleasure on long drives and have a good amount of legroom with some adjustability as well. In the rear, the seats have great cushioning and offer excellent lateral support, with 40-inches+ legroom that is commendable. The cabin is well-isolated from outside noises and is very quiet. The seats sport stitching accents that look elegant. In terms of visibility, the rear visibility is blocked due to the thick rear pillars. Ingress and egress functionality is easy as well.

All the cars seat five people. The Chrysler boasts of very wide front and rear seats but lacks in the front headroom and legroom. The Kia Cadenza offers a tremendously long 45.5-inches front legroom that is the most among these cars. It also has the most headroom. In the rear, however, the Chrysler offers the most legroom at 40.1 inches and shares the top spot for the rear headroom with the Cadenza. The long-wheelbase helps the Chrysler deliver a balanced interior space in the front and rear row while not compromising on cargo space. The Nissan Maxima and the Buick offer great front space but are low in the rear space against the 300. The main reason for this legroom on the 300 is due to its long wheelbase.

Some interior features are:

  • Heated and ventilated power front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Power rear window sunshade
  • Leather upholstery

2017 Chrysler 300 Infotainment system

The 2017 Chrysler 300's infotainment system is among the most simple and easy to use systems available in cars of this segment today. The 8.4-inches touchscreen with Uconnect functionality has a straightforward interface with menu accessibility a piece of cake. The touch responses are quick, with nearly no lag at all. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard on the 300. Other standard features across all trims include two USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, satellite radio, and a 6-speaker sound system.

Other features available on higher trims include:

  • A navigation system
  • An amplifier
  • A ten-speaker Beats Audio sound system
  • A 19-speaker Harman Kardon stereo system

2017 Chrysler 300 Cargo volume

The 2017 Chrysler 300 comes with a standard cargo volume of 16.3 cu-ft, which is decent space offered for this class of cars. This is enough space for a quick family getaway, but won't be much useful for longer journeys with a family.

Model Chrysler 300 Limited 2017 Buick LaCrosse 2017 Nissan Maxima 2017 Kia Cadenza Premium
Cargo Volume (ft.3) 16.3 15.0 14.3 16.0

The rivals offer even less cargo space. The Cadenza offers a 16 cu-ft trunk, just 0.3 cu-ft behind the Chrysler 300. The LaCrosse offers a 15 cu-ft cargo, whereas the Maxima offers the least at 14.3 cu-ft.

Exterior
7.9/10

“In many ways the Chrysler 300, with its hard lines, small greenhouse and wide stance, has defined the look of American luxury sedans.” - KBB

In terms of exterior styling, the Chrysler 300 has not changed at all, with the same design now continuing into the year 2017. This design has now started to age, and rivals offer much sharper and better exterior designs. It's bold, elegant, and has a formal stance to it. At the front, the car sports a trapezoidal grille with a backed-out mesh pattern in between the rectangular headlamps. The lower half features a smaller grille between the LED foglamps. The winged Chrysler logo sits proudly in the center of the meshed grille.

Along the side, one notices the upright stance of the car with the flowing roofline that neatly starts from the front hood and integrates into the rear. There is slight chrome treatment on the upper trims for the mirrors and the door handles. The wheels sit in huge wheel arches that add to the luxury sedan vibe the car emits. The rear is marked with vertical LED taillamps and a lip spoiler. It's very squared off, and might not appeal to some. The look is finished with a dual chrome-finished exhaust setup.

The four cars are nearly identical in terms of exterior dimensions. However, to nitpick, the 300 is the longest, widest and tallest car of the four. It's also the heaviest at 4235 lbs. The 300 sits close to the ground unlike the Cadenza which benefits with its tall ground clearance of 6.4 inches. The Maxima has the tightest wheelbase of 109.3 inches, and the Chrysler 300 has the longest wheelbase of 120.2 inches. This low ground clearance and the long length aid in better performance.

Exterior features on the Chrysler 300 include:

  • Lip spoiler
  • LED foglights
  • Heated mirrors
  • Aluminum wheels
  • Dual-pane sunroof
  • LED taillights

Safety
8.7/10

The 2017 Chrysler 300 does not get great safety scores, but it comes with a long list of safety features. The NHTSA safety-rated the 2017 Chrysler 300 with an overall 4-star rating. It received a 4-star rating in most tests. The IIHS rated the car 'Good' in all tests, except the small-overlap front crash test, where it received a rating of 'Marginal'. Standard features on all 300 trims include a rearview camera, airbags, hill-start assist, and other safety systems. Some other safety features on the car are:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alerts
  • Blind-spot monitors
  • Front Active Head Restraints

Competition
7.0/10

2017 Chrysler 300 vs 2017 Buick LaCrosse

The 2017 Buick LaCrosse has been completely redesigned and is now better equipped in terms of features and interior creature comforts. Like the Chrysler, the Buick also gets a 3.6L V6 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission setup. The Buick LaCrosse offers better fuel economy while making more power and torque over the 300. The Buick is the more balanced car out of these two. The Chrysler 300 however has a slower quarter-mile time.

Even in terms of interior, LaCrosse's interiors are better finished and more luxurious. The Chrysler 300 offers more cargo space and has a much better infotainment system. The Chrysler 300 lacks in the safety factor whereas the LaCrosse excels with its higher safety scores. It has higher reliability over the 300 as well. In terms of pricing, both cars are similarly priced.

2017 Chrysler 300 vs 2017 Nissan Maxima

The 2017 Nissan Maxima also sports a 3.5L V6 engine that makes more power than the Chrysler 300. It however comes with a CVT unlike the automatic 300. This CVT is very precise and gives the Maxima a quicker time of around 0.4 seconds in the 0-60 mph run. The Chrysler 300 however stops quicker than the Maxima in the braking test. In terms of fuel economy, the Maxima is more economical but the Chrysler sports a longer range. The 300 however has the optional AWD.

The interior offered on the Maxima is similar to that on the Chrysler 300. Both cars offer similar features and similar cargo space as well. In terms of safety as well, the Nissan is well ahead of the Chrysler with better safety ratings and standard driver assistance features. The Chrysler is slightly more affordable than the Maxima by $270. The Nissan also has higher reliability ratings.

2017 Chrysler 300 vs 2017 Kia Cadenza

The 2017 Kia Cadenza got a complete redesign and now looks sharp, sporty, and very luxurious as well. It also gets a retuned engine for better fuel economy and that gives the Cadenza a slightly better economy over the 300. The 3.3L V6 engine makes less power and torque compared to the 300, but has a similar 0-60 mph time. It also has a similar braking performance.

In terms of cargo capacity, both cars offer a similar capacity at 16 cu-ft. In terms of interior space, the front legroom on the Kia is the best in class. It's lighter than the Chrysler, and dimensionally smaller as well. The IIHS rated the Kia with far superior ratings over the 300. At $31,990, it's around $1000 cheaper than the Chrysler 300.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Chrysler 300 is one of the best full-size family sedans that offer great luxury and top-notch performance. The car's design is slowly aging but it still retains the charm of the American luxury sedan. The interiors of the 300 are simply defined as comfortable and quiet. It offers one of the best infotainment systems in this class. It lacks in safety and reliability compared to the competitors, but with all that Chrysler offers at $32,000 for even the feature-loaded base trim, it's surely a worthy pick.

              Nice sedan

Pros - ["Easy to control", "Comfortable seats", "Love the body style"]

Cons - ["Wish it had more power", "Door panels had to be replaced all 4 . They were coming apart", "Radio turns on by itself so probably some kind of short"]

I get good mpg but I also do alot of highway driving. It's easy to handle. I love the body style. Also I haven't had to do alot of repairs so far. I bought it new with only 43 miles on it. The tires are low profiles so good for performance but if it is bad weather not so much.
