Overview

SUVs are the choice of the hour today and the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse still remains a great choice for a practical SUV that can house up to eight occupants and tow a reasonable load. The Chevrolet Traverse also opens ample space on the inside and its subtle creases and chrome linings add a touch of elegance on its sleeves. A V6 engine seamlessly powers the Traverse through everyday challenges and its comfortable ride is always an added advantage.

Buying Advice

The 2013 Traverse is pretty capable with respect to mechanical power and even though you are an enthusiast who wants a V-8 option, there isn’t any. The 1LT trim could have been our choice of recommendation here but Chevrolet conveniently dropped features like heated seats and climate control from the trim. Thus, the 2LT trim Traverse would be our pick. The trim comes very well equipped with comfort features and has a power liftgate. The power liftgate is one of the most important features of any utility vehicle and no one should compromise on that one.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Along with an updated suite of tech and creature comforts, the Chevrolet Traverse also enjoys top safety ratings. Well, that's something which the family-friendly Traverse has been offering since a while now. Talk about family and the Traverse also opens up a large boot to further your expeditions. At a starting MSRP of $30,510, the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse provides a well-rounded package for all your driving needs. However, the similarly skilled Dodge Durango, Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer pose a good threat to the humble Chevrolet here.

Features
8.0/10

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse can be had in 8-seater or 7-seater configurations and is available in 4 trim levels. The range starts from LS, 1LT, 2LT, and LTZ. The base trim LS comes with basic yet important features like air-conditioning on both rows, folding seats, etc. even the infotainment setup is pretty good on the base trim. While the features do improve as one moves up the ladder, there are no optional packages available on the two introductory trims. The 2LT and LTZ trims get a 10 speaker Bose sound system, dual-pane sunroof, and a rear DVD entertainment package.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2013 Traverse is available with a single engine option only. We’re talking about a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine which may seem underwhelming on a hefty SUV. However, the engine’s 281 hp & 266 lb-ft of torque just makes it in time for most scenarios. The transmission choice is restricted as well to a 6-speed automatic, though you can opt for FWD or AWD as per your needs.

The top-trim LTZ with twin exhaust ports will see a slight bump in power figures at 288 hp & 270 lb-ft torque. The driving experience of this SUV is good as it delivers smooth overall performance and the cabin is quiet. The engine as we talked about earlier feels like it wasn’t the best choice for this SUV and its harsh and uninspired noises do make you feel this every time you try pushing it harder. The gearbox thankfully is very well calibrated and the shifts are buttery smooth.

All the SUVs in today’s comparisons are very well matched to each other in all performance-related aspects. Except for the Honda Pilot that is almost a second slower, all are on the same page in both the drag runs. Honda must have a better fuel economy if they are compromising a little on the performance front.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

While the V6 in the Traverse may be questionable to some buyers, it serves a good purpose. Not only is the engine punchy enough for everyday duties, it also deliver̥s a respectable fuel economy. The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse offer̥s a respectable 19 MPG combined fuel economy. Couple that figure with a large 22.0-gallon fuel tank and you get a pretty decent 418 miles of combined driving range as well.

While the Chevrolet TrÌ¥averse may not be the most impressive among the pack here but it’s not disappointing either. WIth a midsize SUV which can seat eight with good comfort and space and in good discipline, you can’t really seek anything further. Among the competition though, the Honda Pilot stands out with its 21 mpg combined economy while the Dodge Durango offers the best driving range of 467 miles, thanks to Dodge's largest 24.6-gallons of fuel tank.

Interior
9.0/10

The 2013 Traverse has a practical and basic interior overall. The interior can be had in a Grey-white color combination and it looks stunning. The interior panels in this cabin are padded with soft-touch material in most places keeping the hard plastic use to the minimum. The only odd man inside the Traverse is that big yet thin steering wheel like we used to have on much older SUVs. The front seats on this SUV are pretty flat but offer a wide range of adjustability in return.

The second-row seats have the same story to tell but you can actually fit 3 back in here, that’s a plus. If you opt for the captains’ chairs setup with the 3-zone climate control, the hand rest gets replaced by the A/C vents for the third-row passengers and that’s where you will have to rest your hands. Trust us it becomes uncomfortable in just minutes. The third-row seats can accommodate 2 passengers of small stature easily and the distance between the seats and floor is good so no more knees folding against the tummy on the third row.

Apart from its overall comfort and in-cabin space, the Traverse also scores high on practicality. The Cargo holding capacity of the Traverse is best in the segment with the third row up. The seats can be folded flat with just a flip switch and create a huge 70.3 cubic feet of space for longer wider items. When pitched against rivals here, the Traverse has the best cargo space among the lot here.

Key Interior Features:

  • Dual-pane sunroof
  • Heated & cooled front seats
  • Driver seat memory
  • Power front seats
  • Wood grain interior trim
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse’s infotainment system?

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse SUV comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen even on the base trims with a 6-speaker sound system. The system has smartphone integration as well as can be used for streaming Pandora and Internet Radio via your phone's data plan. If you care about the second-row passenger's entertainment, the optional package will add a screen under the roof as well as a 10 speaker Bose audio system.

Exterior
7.0/10

In an era of conventional boxy shapes, Chevrolet has decided to go against the wind. It isn’t necessarily a bad thing but after designing so many squarish SUVs, looking at an SUV with curvy, soft looks is going to be difficult for the hardcore Chevrolet loyalists. The 2013 Traverse is still based on its first-generation model but gets some subtle design tweaks. The old split grille is now gone and is replaced with the grille we see on Chevrolet sedans, but still, it looks cool.

Another noticeable change is the headlight assembly which now gets a black trim going around it and looks like eyeliner. Sorry for the cheesy analogy but it does, really. They tried this on the taillight unit as well but it is done in a better manner here than the front. Overall the design refresh seems to be working fine and it has made the SUV look more mature and manly than the previous year's balloon. No changes on the side profile and you still get that subtle shoulder-line which beautifully blends with the curvy window-line.

In the competition here, the Honda Pilot is the smallest SUV in the segment but it still carries that conventional boxy look with confidence. Though the Pilot has that elegant appeal, it looks rather too contemporary. The Ford Explorer on the other hand is quite a looker compared to all its rivals with its sharp design which doesn’t seem to lose its relevance even three or five years down the line. The Chevrolet Traverse on the other hand carries a balanced exterior appeal which also resonates in the way it drives. Some of the key exterior highlights of the Traverse are listed below:

Exterior Features:

  • Blacked out headlight & taillight setup
  • 20-inch wheels
  • Automatic LED headlights
  • Heated mirrors
  • Remote ignition
  • Power liftgate

Safety
9.9/10

The Chevrolet Traverse is one the safest vehicles you could buy and has scored almost perfect crash test ratings in the previous years. The chassis of the TrÌ¥averÌ¥se which also underpins the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave is well recognised in the auto-industry today.

In the NHTSA crash tests, the Traverse has earned 5-stars in overall safety along with frontal impacts and side crash tests. The 2013 Traverse has done well in the IIHS crash tests as well with Good rating in side-impact and roof-strength tests. Credit also goes to its healthy suite of safety features, some of which are listed below:

Key Safety Features:

  • Front center side airbag
  • Rollover mitigation
  • Hill-start assist
  • Rearview camera & rear parking sensors
  • Side blind zone alert
  • Rear cross-traffic alerts

Final Verdict

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse is a wholesome family mover with a reasonable towing capacity for those holiday trips to ski resorts. There is nothing wrong with this SUV to point at. Everything this SUV does, does great. The interior quality is very much up to the mark in higher trims and the fuel economy along with a large fuel tank is good and the large fuel tank is good enough to felicitate your wild endeavours. Even if you are not towing anything, the cargo carrying capacity alone should keep this SUV on top of your watchlist. Poised handling and comfortable ride further put a favorable icing on its cake. Overall the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse is a no-nonsense family SUV that does it all.
