Overview

Chevrolet has always been on its toes when it came to competing with the Blue Oval in terms of SUVs and pickup trucks. The brand eventually went on to make some of the best and most dependable trucks on American soil and the Silverado is just another brilliant example. Launched back in 1998, the Silverado was built on the GMT800 platform and has evolved into a handsome truck today.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the LT trim for personal use owing to its decent list of features. For fleet operators, the base Work Truck would be the best option.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The truck retains its GMT K2XX platform and the price starts at $27,195. In its base form, the truck gets a practical flex-fuel V6 motor and an RWD configuration. In the segment, the truck sees stiff competition from the Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, and the RAM 1500.

Features

Engine and Performance
8.1/10

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 gets the 4.3L V6 engine as standard and it puts out 285 horsepower along with 305 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The power and torque levels are more than adequate for day-to-day requirements and with the V6, if equipped properly, the truck can tow up to 7,600 pounds which is decent for the segment with similarly-equipped rivals. The 6-speed transmission is decent but tends to shift at a slower rate sometimes.

The Ford F-150 with its 3.5-liter V6 is the least powerful one here but has rather quick acceleration times. The GMC Sierra 1500 is the mechanical twin of the Silverado 1500 hence its power and performance figures are similar. The RAM 1500 has the highest horsepower rating along with the brilliant 8-speed automatic transmission. While the Chevrolet and GMC are based on the same underpinnings and have similar performance, the 2016 F-150 is the quickest taking 5.8 seconds to the 60mph mark. On the other hand, the 2016 RAM 1500 clocks the highest speed of 140 MPH.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500’s gas mileage with its 4.3L V6 is rated at 18 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive configuration, and with the four-wheel-drive layout the mileage drops by one mpg. The 5.3L V8 is rated at 16/23/19 with rear-wheel drive and 16/22/18 with four-wheel drive.

Both the Ford F-150 and the GMC Sierra 1500 have similar fuel economy ratings to the Silverado 1500 but the former gets a comparably small gas tank of 23 gallons hence fails to offer a matching driving range. The RAM 1500 has lower city mileage than some of its rivals but leads the segment with its highway mileage of 650 miles.

Interior
8.3/10

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with its three cab configurations- the regular cab, double cab, or crew cab will surprise you in terms of comfort. The cabin is quiet, spacious and the ride quality is smooth and comparable to luxury SUVs. The dash layout is simplistic and the controls are laid out in a user-friendly manner. The front seats offer excellent comfort levels, especially over long trips. The cargo bed has a total cargo volume of 61.0 cubic feet or 76.3 cubic feet depending on the configuration and trim. The cargo volume also varies with the configuration of the cab as well.

The GMC Sierra 1500 has similar cabin dimensions and comfort levels to the Silverado aligned with similar cargo space as well. The Ford F-150 has a practical cabin but the comfort levels are somewhat lower than the GM trucks. The RAM 1500 offers the best-in-class features and comfort levels inside the cabin and also leads in terms of cargo capacity managing 74.7 cu.-ft of space. But the GM duo holds the crown in terms of cabin space. Some interior features are:

  • Audio And Cruise Controls On Steering Wheel
  • Single Zone Front Air Conditioning
  • Front And Rear Cupholders
  • Leather Steering Wheel
  • Front And Rear Door Pockets
  • Tilt-Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Dual Illuminating Vanity Mirrors

How intuitive is the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado’s infotainment unit?

The infotainment system onboard the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is quite basic in the base trim and offers only a small 4.2-inch color display with a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack. Stepping up to the LS trim will get you an upgraded infotainment system with a handsome list of features such as a 7-inch touchscreen, Chevrolet's MyLink interface, OnStar with 4G LTE, WiFi, and smartphone compatibility among other features. Some infotainment features include:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio (Optional)
  • WiFi Hotspot (Optional)
  • Smart Device Integration (Optional)
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto(optional)

Exterior
7.0/10

The redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 features a bolder and more aggressive appeal than before. The front fascia, especially with the completely redesigned honeycomb grille and angular headlamps, seems angry which matches the Silverado's character.

The Ford F-150 gets a simpler appeal but has excellent ground clearance. The GMC Sierra 1500 has an even bolder appeal than the Silverado 1500 with a huge grille. The RAM 1500 gets a bold look with a wide front grille but the GM trucks carry the best exterior design. While the RAM and Ford have longer wheelbases of 120.5 and 120 inches, the Chevrolet and GMC are the widest in the lot measuring 80 inches. Each truck also sports ground clearance in excess of 8 inches, making them off-road ready. Some exterior features are:

  • Spray-On Bedliner
  • Polished Exhaust Tips
  • Black, Heated, Manual Extending Power Exterior Trailering Mirrors
  • Soft Folding Tonneau Cover
  • Cargo Box Retractable Side Assist Step
  • LED Cargo Box Lighting
  • Underbody Shield Package
  • Bed Liner

Safety
8.6/10

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado earned an impressive 5-star rating from the NHTSA and an overall “Good” rating from the IIHS as well. Some of the standard safety features on the truck include anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear-seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags. Some of the Safety Features are-

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • All-speed traction control
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • 6 airbags
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Final Verdict

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is being constantly updated by Chevy whether it be the exterior styling or slight tweaks to the infotainment system which helps to keep the Silverado relevant with time along with boosting the sales as well. Lastly, the Silverado 1500 offers a blend of utility and comfort without sacrificing its style and the charm of the old school C10 pickups along with the affordability and choice of trims and configurations which puts it right at one of the top-most spots for pickup trucks.

Superb power, customizable and family friendly crash test rating.

Pros - ["Comes with a tow package", "5 star crash rating", "Sleek design compared to other years"]

Cons - ["Transmission, hard shift to 3rd gear", "Gas mileage", "Cab room in back"]

I love basically everything about my Silverado, if I drive like a normal person I can even get around 23 mpg on freeway. The power is always there and maintenance is easy as long as you research. It has never broken down or failed me yet.
