Overview

The BMW X2 is a compact SUV with a design that places aesthetics over practicality. The BMW X2 is quick to drive on winding roads thanks to its agile handling, in fact, some may argue that it drives more like a hatchback than an SUV. However, the ride quality isn't as luxurious as you may anticipate from a small luxury SUV. The inside is attractive, has lots of soft-touch materials and clear technological elements, and there are supportive and comfy front seats. The X2 is the best compact SUV if personality, performance, and style are prioritized before utility.

Buying Advice

We will recommend the BMW X2 xDrive28i due to its reasonable pricing and an extensive list of standard equipment. Even in dry weather, the X2 can maximize its power and handling potential thanks to the xDrive AWD drive. If you still have money in your budget, invest in the Convenience package for the panoramic sunroof and the auto-dimming rearview mirrors.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 BMW X2 undergoes very little alteration from its previous iteration, black side-mirror caps may now be ordered separately by customers, and the Extended Shadowline package will swap out external chrome trim for gloss-black finishes. There are several reasons to enjoy the BMW X2 and it is available in three trims levels which include the sDrive 28i, xDrive 28i, and the M35i model which is for people who don't mind sacrificing practicality in order to drive a bit insane. The base trim starts at an MSRP of $36,600 which can range up to a maximum of $46,450 with its top tier. In this segment, it will always continue to compete against the likes of the Audi Q3, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250, and the Volvo XC40.

Features
8.0/10

The BMW X2 2022 is a small luxury SUV that can seat up to five passengers and it comes in three different trims which include the sDrive28i, xDrive28i, and the M35i. The BMW X2 sDrive28i comes with an FWD drivetrain as standard while an optional AWD drivetrain is available on the BMW X2 xDrive28i and the BMW X2 M35i. The base BMW X2 price starts at around $36,600 that comes equipped with a standard suite of features and specifications which include 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, taillights, fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, a sunroof, a power tailgate, synthetic leather seats with eight-way power adjustments, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, a seven-speaker audio system, keyless entry/ignition, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The BMW X2 subcompact SUV delivers impressive fuel efficiency numbers as with an FWD drivetrain it may achieve a fuel economy of 24 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. However, the fuel economy suffers a slight decrease to 31 MPG on the highway if you choose the basic 28i trim's xDrive AWD variant. Despite its increased power, the M35i trim still managed to achieve a remarkable combined gas mileage of 26 MPG. It can cover a range of 515 miles on the highway thanks to its fuel tank capacity of 16.1 gallons in its class.

In comparison, the BMW X2 2022 competes with the Mercedes GLA 250 which offers an equivalent fuel economy of 24 MPG in the city, while the GLA 250 offers a mileage of 34 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. However, it compensates with the least fuel tank capacity of 13.9 gallons in its class. The 2022 BMW X2 can cover a range of 515 miles with the help of its big fuel tank capacity of 16.1 gallons. When comparing all the statistics, we can say that the Mercedes GLA 2022 is a better fuel-efficient vehicle in its class.

Interior
7.9/10

The inside of the X2 is a satisfying blend of BMW functionality and good ergonomics. The iDrive touch controller maintains the number of buttons to a minimum while providing a logical layout for the controls. It is not the roomiest subcompact SUV due to its coupe-like roofline. Tall riders may feel a little crowded in the back seat because of the loss of headroom and it is not the finest, either, be the shoulder or leg space. However, drivers get a comfortable seating posture in the front seats, which provides plenty of head and legroom and the seating chairs are cozy and reassuring. The cabin's high-quality construction is what we admire most about it. The 2022 BMW X2 provides you with everything you need for a pleasurable ride, including a great driving position, padded seats, premium leather, and several helpful tech features.

Behind its rear seats, the BMW X2 offers 21.6 cu-ft of luggage capacity, and when the back seats are folded, there is 50.1 cu-ft of room. These are typical capabilities for the premium subcompact SUV category. However, this subcompact crossover SUV still has adequate room to hold the shopping for half a day of its upwardly mobile target customers. The Audi Q3 offers an above-average 23.7 cu-ft of room behind the second row but a below-average total of 48 cu-ft behind the first row and the least cargo capacity with the rear seats folded down can be seen at 15.4 cu-ft in the Benz GLA 250. While the Volvo XC40 SUV lurks at the bottom with the least 46.9 cu-ft of cargo capacity behind the first row.

Some of its key interior features include

  • SensaTec upholstery.
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control.
  • Proximity key for push button start only.
  • Interior trim including Piano black console insert and metal-look interior accents.
  • Tilt/telescopic steering wheel column.
  • Power front seats including 1-way manual headrests and memory system for driver's seat and exterior mirror positions.

How intuitive is the 2022 BMW X2 Infotainment system?

The iDrive software powers the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and it has a very contemporary BMW feel about it. In comparison to many of the rivals, the UI is very user-friendly and the display is responsive. With sufficient clarity and power for the compact interior, the Harman Kardon audio system is an excellent option. Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, GPS, Bluetooth, aux, USB ports, and voice recognition are all standard items on the feature list. The X2 still lacks Android Auto compatibility, which for some consumers is a deal-breaker.

Some of its salient infotainment features are as follows

  • 8.8-inch touchscreen display.
  • Seven speaker audio system.
  • USB audio connection and hands-free Bluetooth wireless technology.
  • Voice command system with natural language understanding.
  • Apple CarPlay compatibility.
  • SiriusXM satellite radio including 1 year all access subscription.

Exterior
7.9/10

The 2022 BMW X2 offers a sporty and attractive-looking exterior when compared to the BMW X1. With its slanted roof and slightly smoother, rounder lines, the 2022 BMW X2 is more comparable to a hot hatchback in terms of its design. Additionally, it brims with quirky external details like BMW roundels attached to the rearmost roof pillars and optional bronze exterior trim. Despite having a considerably wider color palette that goes beyond the typical lease-special grey hues BMW prefers for its mainstream cars, the X2 is a near sibling of the somewhat unremarkable X1. However, the X2 wasn't really in need of dramatic modifications, to begin with. With its sporty and streamlined design, this SAC was a fantastic grab right away.

In comparison, the Volvo XC40 2022 offers a much better ground clearance that measures 8.3 inches that manage stability when accelerating at fast speeds and makes driving on rough terrain easier. The largest wheelbase can be seen in the Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV which measures 107.4 inches and delivers superior ride comfort and cornering stability to competitors with shorter wheelbases.

Some of its key exterior features include

  • 18-inch Y-spoke style 566 wheels.
  • Black bodyside insert, black bodyside cladding and black wheel well trim.
  • High-gloss Chrome exhaust tips.
  • Body-colored power heated side mirrors with manual folding and turn signal indicator.
  • Speed-sensitive rain detecting variable intermittent wipers with heated jets.
  • Front fog lamps and LED brake lights.

Safety
9.7/10

A few driving-assistance systems such as automated emergency braking, a driver monitoring system, pedestrian recognition, and lane departure warning, are included as standard equipment on the 2022 BMW X2. However, features like the parking help function and adaptive cruise control with stop and go are extras that can be chosen. All three trim choices have the fundamental safety measures as standard equipment, and the construction quality is good as well. As a consequence, the 2022 BMW X2 scored favorably in the majority of the IIHS crash test areas while the NHTSA has not tested the BMW X2 2022 yet.

Some of its key safety features include

  • Frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation.
  • Tire-specific low tire pressure warning.
  • Lane-departure warning.
  • Park distance control front and rear parking sensors.
  • Speed limit recognition.
  • Dual stage driver and passenger front airbags.

2022 BMW X2 vs 2022 Audi Q3

It could be a bit more difficult to get in and out of the Audi Q3 in a congested parking lot because it is a little broader than the BMW X2 while the Audi is a little bit longer will make you feel happy driving it when compared to the BMW. On the other hand, the 2022 BMW X2 can turn into tight spaces more easily than the Audi Q3 2022. In comparison to the BMW X2, the Audi Q3 is slightly less powerful. The Audi Q3 struggles to distribute power to its wheels as effectively as the BMW X2 due to its lesser torque engine. Whether you choose an Audi or BMW mostly depends on the features you desire in a super-compact luxury SUV.

2022 BMW X2 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250

Despite not being a newbie to the world of high-performance premium vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has never had the same level of power and agility as BMW. In addition to having more horsepower, the BMW X2 has available xDrive AWD and rides higher off the ground than many of its luxury SUV rivals. In contrast, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 offers an optional 4MATIC AWS and has a relatively low ride height. The GLA offers a cost-effective way to experience the Mercedes brand, however, we're less enamored by the GLA's vast list of pricey options and the GLA's level of road noise in its class.

2022 BMW X2 vs 2022 Volvo XC40

Picking one option in between these two competitors is a tough choice as the Volvo XC40 is one of our top-ranked premium subcompact SUVs. Although it doesn't handle as well as the BMW X2, it is less expensive and has more amenities, some of which (like Android Auto) is not available in the BMW. The Volvo also offers a softer suspension and greater space in the back. Both of these crossovers offer two excellent engine choices, fantastic interior layouts, and around average load capacity for the class.

Final Verdict

Like its previous iteration, the 2022 BMW X2 receives a thumbs up from CarHP and we ought to recommend this subcompact luxury SUV because it drives well and is stylish in addition to being comfortable and sophisticated. The X2 isn't nearly as upscale as some of its rivals despite having a nice cabin with comfy seats and user-friendly technologies in its class, nevertheless, it is a good option to consider in its class.
