Overview

The 8-Series badge returned to BMW’s lineup after almost two decades in 2018, and well, ever since, it’s presented itself as a designing marvel that knows how to perform. BMW’s strategy with the 8-Series is simple, it is to create a flagship offering which vaunts luxurious appointments and does not shy away from a drag race when tested on the track. The 2022 MY is no exception and while it continues with a similar approach to etch its name in the market, BMW has sought to introduce minimal yet impactful changes to the coupe.

Buying Advice

Both trims of the 2022 BMW 8-Series coupe have been curated to deliver an exquisite experience by providing abundant standard features. Among the two trims, we recommend opting for the higher-placed M850i xDrive that features a V8 engine that can deliver outputs and performance in the supercar territory. With the availability of a standard all-wheel-drivetrain, the M850i promises all-season drivability and the improved 20-inch performance tires ensure a more planted and sturdier ride quality. On the inside, there is not much to distinguish between the two, but the option of standard front ventilated seats with the top trim adds to the plushness that is already on offer.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe now receives an increased number of practical features. With the availability of the M-Package as standard, the 8-Series gains the ability to dust its competitors with aplomb and at a lower MSRP than before. While it continues to suffer from a couple of flaws, BMW’s evident efforts to make the 8-Series almost inch-perfect ensure that these will be dealt with, sooner than ever. In its segment, it competes head-on with the likes of the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe and the 2022 Acura NSX, both cars that have redefined coupe segments for their respective brands.

Features

The 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe continues to be made available in the similar two trims as the previous year. You either get the base 840i trim that sports an inline-6 engine and rear/all-wheel-drivetrain or the higher-placed M850i xDrive that hosts a V8 and AWD setup. To cater to a larger class of buyers, the 8-Series is also available with a drop-top option, as a performance-focused M8 variant or a family-hauler, as the Gran Coupe variant. While the standard list of features on the coupe have seen an addition to them, the prices for the 2022 8-Series have gone down from what they were before, ironic, isn’t it?

Release Date

The 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe is already available in the market for sale. You can either choose the coupe or convertible variant as of now, however, the 2022 8-Series Gran Coupe will be launched later this year.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

For vehicles that fall in the segment that houses the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe, fuel efficiency is the least of concerns while making a buying decision; it’s essentially a trade-off between performance and frugality. Yet the BMW offering manages decent fuel efficiency and is rated at 18 and 25 MPG in the city and on the highway, respectively.

While range is not known, a combined efficiency of 20 MPG, makes the 8-Series one of the better options in the segment. Opting for the base 840i trims makes the BMW the most conservative vehicle in the lot averaging a combined mileage of 25 MPG. Its fuel tank has a standard capacity of 18-gallons, making it one of the most voluminous tanks in the segment. Equating the efficiency and tank capacity, we feel that there are no two thoughts that the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe will average range comparable to its competitors, if not more than them.

While the 2022 Acura NSX’s hybrid assistance allows it to be the most efficient vehicle in the segment averaging a combined efficiency of 21 MPG, its smaller fuel tank puts it at a disadvantage when the range is concerned. The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe that continues unchanged from the previous year model remains on top of its game managing in excess of 400 miles on the highway and sporting a fuel tank that can hold up to 18.5-gallons of fuel.

Interior
7.5/10

The 2022 BMW 8-Series is typically a coupe on the inside. The sloping roofline has a bearing on the headroom available to the passengers and like every other vehicle in the segment, the rear seats feel constrained for adults to be seated in. The front seats, however, are typically BMW with ample cushioning and bolstering to them and the option of 14-way power adjustability only adds to the enriching experience. While comfort on the inside is top-notch, ingress and egress are through the two doors at the front and the rear seat can be accessed only by folding down the front seats.

In terms of fit and finish, the 2022 BMW 8-Series coupe is suggestive of the brand’s idea of granting a stately and palatial aura to the cabin. The M-steering wheel with the leather wrap has a distinctive feel to it and the Nappa Leather finish on the dashboard merges seamlessly with other high-quality materials on offer. The anthracite headliner, floormats, and Merino leather upholstery for the seats make the (almost) hundred thousand dollars you spend on the car, worth it.

The 2022 8-Series Coupe can seat four passengers only. However, with the low-lying seats and a receding design, outward visibility does seem to be a problem. But the BMW can seat two additional passengers than its competitors, and even with the presence of the second row of seats, cargo space remains the highest in the segment at 15 cubic feet.

When compared to the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe, the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe and 2022 Acura NSX can seat two passengers only. While they do offer extra space upfront, practicality does seem to be a tad bit compromised. The Jaguar, however, remains in a similar ballpark as the BMW in terms of cargo capacity having a total trunk volume of 14.4 cubic feet.

The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe, however, does sport a feature-rich and luxuriant cabin setup. The Acura NSX fails to make a quality statement like its competitors and is an aspect the brand could work on when introducing the suspected 2022 MY.

Some of the standout interior features of the 2022 BMW 8-Series includes:

  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Dual-zone Climate Control
  • Heads-up Display
  • Cruise Control
  • Drive and Passenger memory seats with lumbar support
  • Ventilated front seats (available only with the BMW M850i xDrive)

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe?

The 2022 BMW 8-Series features two sets of display screens. While the standard screen is a 10.3-inch touchscreen centrally placed on the dashboard, the other is a 12.3-inch gauge cluster unit that sits behind the steering wheel.

The infotainment system is heavily equipped and it comes with standard features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB connection, and WiFi Hotspot. However, it lacks the intuitiveness you would expect from a system at this time and day. Some of the salient infotainment system features include:

  • 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system (Optional)
  • SiriusXM 1-year all-access subscription
  • BMW ConnectediDrive Services
  • Hard Disk Drive
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Auxiliary Audio Input

Exterior
7.5/10

As mentioned earlier, we feel that the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe is a designing marvel that deserves all the laurels for its prepossessing and enticing styling. It sports an underrated unification of aggressiveness and sophistication and as a result, it’s a car you could take to your business meetings or a weekend getaway with your friends. The front grille that sits centrally, wrapped by the mighty headlights, looks rather small as per BMW’s liking, but it is clearly imposing and complements well the sculpted hood.

2022 BMW 8 Series Coupe Side View

Look at it from the side and you can notice the typical coupe-like structure flaring. The roofline recedes confidently to merge with the taillights and while it creates some bearing on the rearward visibility it bestows the 2022 8-Series Coupe with a rather razor-sharp look. If you opt for the M850i xDrive variant, you can also choose the Carbon Exterior Package that adds embellishments like a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, air intakes, and the diffuser.

The 2022 BMW 8-Series is evidently larger than its competitors and sports the longest overall length and wheelbase of 191.2 and 111.1 inches, respectively. While it is not the widest, it is the tallest vehicle at 53 inches and has a total curb weight of 4,400 lbs, making it the heaviest vehicle.

The 2022 Acura NSX and 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe have similar lengths and wheelbase, but the former is the widest vehicle in the segment at 87.3 inches. However, the Acura’s total and height and ground clearance of 3.7 inches is on the lower side of the table.

Some salient exterior features of the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe include:

  • 19-inch all-season tires (available with the 840i trim)
  • 20-inch performance tires (available with the M850i xDrive trim)
  • Aerodynamic Kit
  • Non-metallic or metallic exterior paint options
  • Rear Spoiler (available with the M850i xDrive trim)
  • Power-folding heated side mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

Like every other vehicle from the brand, the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe promises to prioritize safety over every other aspect. Both trims of the vehicle feature an absolutely similar set of optional and standard passive and active safety features. While it has not been rated by the NHTSA or IIHS, the 2022 8-Series upholds reliability and safety providing a slew of warranty options and safety features. As standard, the Coupe comes equipped with features like adaptive brake lights, rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, and a comprehensive airbag system for all occupants. Some of its other safety specifications include:

  • BMW Assist eCall
  • Active Protection System
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Acoustic Safety belt warning
  • Cross-traffic Alert
  • Blind-spot monitor

2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe vs 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe

The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R-Coupe is one of the better options you can look out for in the segment around the $100,000 mark. As striking and appealing as it looks on the outside, the F-Type R-Coupe features an equally sophisticated cabin setup that makes use of quality materials for that plush and upmarket experience on the inside. It is the only coupe that features a supercharged V8 unit and produces the highest output in the segment.

However, that is where its ascendancy over the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe comes to a halt. The 8-Series Coupe has better acceleration capabilities than its V8 unit. It features higher seating capacity, better trunk volume, and is also more efficient. Moreover, the base 840i trims provide options for an AWD setup alongside a potent powertrain. So, if you’re adamant about buying the Jaboutuar, we suggest having a look at the BMW, as it could save you some essential dollars and provide a more striking and enhanced experience.

2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe vs 2022 Acura NSX

While a final confirmation regarding its release date is yet to be made, the 2022 Acura NSX as a carryover model continues to be a stiff competitor in the coupe segment. It delivers best-in-class acceleration and makes use of tri-motor hybrid assistance for better power delivery and efficiency. However, everything that Acura seems to do, the BMW either performs equally or has a better response up its sleeve.

The 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe and Acura NSX differ by the barest of margins, but the former is a more practical proposition. BMW sports better interior quality, higher seating capacity, an enhanced infotainment setup, higher efficiency through its six-cylinder model, and manages to be the perfect companion on your road trips. Even in terms of design, it feels new-fangled and contemporary, while the Acura lacks the element of surprise you would look for in a car at its price point. At more than $50,000 in excess of the BMW, the Acura NSX seems to be a wasteful decision and the 8-Series is the clear winner out of the lot.

Final Verdict

Throughout we have been full of praises for the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe, it’s a car that will instantly grab your attention and we guarantee you will be in awe of it. Even with minimal changes to the current MY, the 8-Series Coupe upholds the modernity and contemporary nature it has always been known for. It looks impressive and has an undeniable road presence.

The 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe is still the power-packed unit that is quick-firing with both its engine options and handles itself with great poise. Its efficient, commodious, and upmarket; characteristics you seldom find together in a car with a V6 or V8 unit under the hood. It is reflective of the bespoke engineering that goes into curating an inch-perfect German vehicle and is also suggestive of the brand’s idea to cater to the best interest of the buyers. Both trims provide the best value for money in the segment and if we were to buy a coupe, we would not have looked further ahead of the 2022 BMW 8-Series Coupe.
