2022 Mazda MX-30 Electric

Mazda has not revealed any details yet regarding the trims and the available features of the MX-30, but if it continues to follow Mazda’s trend of bifurcation of trims, one can expect it to be offered in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trims with a few additional option packages as well, with the prices expected to start at around $30,000. Since the details are yet to surface, we would like to reserve our opinions and recommendations in this regard. 

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is estimated to deliver around 100 miles overall for a single charge which is far from being impressive since the competition delivers more than double the mileage provided by the MX-30. The mileage figures got affected by its relatively small 35.5 kWh battery inside the bonnet. 

Although, the expected plug-in hybrid variant will offer a much better mileage since it will have two powertrains. Mazda is yet to reveal the exact mileage for the city and highway that are missing right at the moment.

In the subcompact crossover EV competition, the Kona EV returns a staggering mileage for the city followed by the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV which beats the Hyundai for a better mileage on the highway. The Nissan Leaf is not far behind but does not offer competition-level mileage figures. The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is yet to be launched and it should provide a bit lesser mileage figures for the competition as it will pack the smallest battery for the competition. 

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is expected to have a similar cabin experience as the 2021 CX-30 as the cabin seems to be very compact and yet roomy for up to 5 people. The interior of the MX-30 is expected to look futuristic yet with a very minimal appeal with an all-digital instrument cluster and a floating infotainment display. The interior uses cork on the door panels and other areas and also the seats are made of fabric made of recycled plastics which are sustainable and offer better endurance over time. 

The steering wheel offers a good feel and has almost all control buttons for the driver’s convenience. The cabin has multiple storage spaces for everyday personal items, and with the cargo capacity. Mazda has not confirmed it yet but since the outer body is similar to the CX-30, the cargo capacity on offer should be very much similar to the latter. The cabin is adequately spacious and can accommodate 2 people at the front very easily but the rear seats appear to be a bit cramped with the lack of enough head and legroom.

All the four cars in the competition offer decent cabin space, although the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV offers a bit more space overall but compromises on the boot space which is arguably better in the other three cars. The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is expected to offer a good cabin and boot space like the CX-30. A few of the expected interior features to be bundled with MX-30 are listed below.

2022 Mazda MX-30: Infotainment and Connectivity

The infotainment system on the 2022 MX-30 is not confirmed by the Japanese carmaker but it is expected to carry forward the features from the Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback which sports an 8.8-inch touchscreen display in the middle. The display offers sharp visuals and is easy to use. 

The 2022 MX-30 will come equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and with that comes a whole lot of customizations. Mazda will pack the MX-30 with the latest Mazda Connect system that will allow seamless connectivity features to make everyday drives burdenless. A few of the expected infotainment features are:

• Bluetooth connectivity.
• Navigation system.
• HD Radio.
• Audio system with speakers.
• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The exterior of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 looks as sharp and sporty as the CX-30, which means that the front end will sport an aggressive set of LED headlights and DRLs. This subcompact crossover has a lot of cuts and curves on the sides making it look sporty and aerodynamic. The rear sports sharp LED taillights and a spoiler. 

The door panels are what Mazda calls ‘free style’ as it has only 2 door handles similar to the RX-8. The car is expected to come equipped with either 16 or 18-inch alloy wheels as standard. The overall dimensions are not disclosed but it will be the same as the present-day CX-30 and that means a good amount of ground clearance and a lightweight body.

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is supposed to offer best-in-class ground clearance which can make it very much accessible for almost every road condition. All the other cars in the competition have their distinctive appeal in the market. The Hyundai Kona EV has the most curb weight followed by the Bolt EV. On the other hand, the Nissan Leaf offers a slightly bigger length compared to the competition.

The MX-30 is based on the CX-30 crossover platform and although the MX-30 is yet to be crash tested we can use the CX-30 as a standard. Considering the fact that the 2021 Mazda CX-30 has been rated with a perfect 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA and also received the “Top Safety Pick+” honor from the IIHS, the safety of the MX-30 EV should not be of great concern. Add to that the modern safety and driver assistance features and we are sure to have a winner in this regard. A highlight of the most prominent features is listed below.

The 2022 Mazda MX-30 has its own up and downsides but the matter of concern is the overall mileage which will be evidently lower because of the lower capacity battery. Apart from that, for the price, the MX-30 will provide all the Mazda goodies including stunning looks and design. It is recommended to opt for the other cars like the Hyundai Kona EV which will offer a better overall experience for a slightly bumped up price.
